Muster the Troops

Judges 7:5-7, 19-22

5 So he brought the people down to the water. And the LORD said to Gideon, "Everyone who laps from the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set apart by himself; likewise everyone who gets down on his knees to drink." 6 And the num-ber of those who lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men; but all the rest of the people got down on their knees to drink water. 7 Then the LORD said to Gideon," By the three hundred men who lapped I will save you, and deliver the Midianites into your hand. Let all the other people go, every man to his place." 19 So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outpost of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just as they had posted the watch; and they blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers that were in their hands. 20 Then the three companies blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers — they held the torches in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands for blowing — and they cried, "The sword of the LORD and of Gideon!" 21 And every man stood in his place all around the camp; and the whole army ran and cried out and fled. 22 When the three hundred blew the trumpets, the LORD set every man's sword against his companion throughout the whole camp; and the army fled to Beth Acacia, toward Zererah, as far as the border of Abel Meholah, by Tabbath. NKJV The 2015 Fall Muster of the Mississippi Division Sons of Confederate Veterans this year was a wonderful event with so many people coming together to celebrate and demonstrate a common cause of unity. In a real way the Fall Muster reminded me of the story of Gideon and the 300 men whom he lead into battle against the Midianites. Although today we do not carry a sword or sound the cannon against others. In the real world there are many people who say, many who answer the call, but there are few who stand against the enemy in the darkness of nights when the trumpet calls. The Sons of Confederate Veterans are of Gideon’s troops to carry the light of the Word of God and the sounding of the trumpet to preserve the heritage of our ancestors. May God Bless each of You in Mustering to the Call Thomas Fortenberry, Chaplain Camp 265

Adjutant’s Report By: Sid Boteler

November 2015

In August of 1865, Robert E. Lee accepted the invitation to become the President of Washington College at Lexington, Virginia, (later changed to Washington and Lee University, in his honor). In 1869, Robert E. Lee invited his former chaplain, John William Jones to speak. In thanking him, Lee remarked: “Oh, doctor, if I could only know that all the young men in this College were good Christians I should have nothing more to desire. I wish, sir, to thank you for your address. It was just what we needed. Our great want is a revival which shall bring young men to Christ! I should be disappointed, sir, and shall fail in the leading object that brought me here, unless these young men all become Christians; and I wish you and others of your sacred profession to do all you can to accomplish it. We poor sinners need to come back from our wanderings to seek pardon through the all-sufficient merits of our Redeemer. And we need to pray earnestly for the power of the Holy Spirit to give us a precious revival in our hearts and among the unconverted.” Excerpt from America’s God and Country by William J. Federer
