The school term holidays will start from 27 June to 8 July. This year’s Eid Fitr will be in the second week of the school holidays. For those who wish to make Zakat Fitr payment, kindly see the staff in the Administration Office during the month of Ramadan. Zakat is compulsory and is the third Pillar of Islam. Zakat is levied at 2.5% of all Zakat-able assets after deducting specific liabilities for the year. Items like jewellery and gold are Zakat-able items and their worth should be factored in when calculating totals to be drawn out.

“Zakat is for the poor, and the needy and those who are employed to administer and collect it, and the new converts, and for those who are in bondage, and in debt and service of the cause of God, and for the wayfarers, a duty ordained by God, and God is the all-knowing, the wise.”

The Annual Quran Competition will be held on Saturday, 25 June at the Multipurpose Hall from 11.00am till 1.30pm. I welcome all parents and guardians to this event to witness and support contestants of various levels from both the Primary and Secondary schools. It is a pleasure to see how well they perform in memorising and reciting surahs from the Holy Quran.

The Quran was revealed during the Month of Ramadan, thus there is a significance to recite Quran in Ramadan. As stated in the hadeeth narrated by ‘Abd-Allah ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘Aas (may Allah be pleased with them both), in which the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

Top 10 Tips for a productive Ramadan1 . Have sincere intentions, work hard and make lots of dua for an ultimate productive Ramadan!

2 . Plan each day of Ramadan, the night before. Choose three important tasks you want to achieve the next day and record it in your diary.

3 . Never EVER miss Suhoor, wake up at least 1 hour before Fajr and have a filling and balanced meal.

4 . Start working on your most important tasks right after Fajr and get at least one or two done.

5 . Try to get an afternoon nap, not more than 20 minutes, either just before Dhuhur or after Dhuhur.

6 . Plan your Ramadan days (and life) around Salah times, not the other way round!

7 . Leave at least one–hour for reciting Quran each day.

8. Break your fast with dates and milk or dates and water; pray Maghreb, then come back for a light meal.

9 . Give lots of ‘Physical Sadaqah’; get involved in organising community iftars, charity drives, helping orphans etc. Earn rewards working for others.

1 0 . Don’t miss an opportunity for Dawah! When someone asks you why you’re not eating, give them a beautiful explanation of Ramadan and Islam.

Alhamdullilah we had a tremendous turnout for our Parent Seminar on Online Safety. A big “Thank You!” to all the parents who took time out of their busy schedules to attend and benefit from this important session. Ms Anisa Sharif, the Australian Federal Police’s Community Liaison Officer, shared several important tips on how to protect one’s child while they are online. As per Ms Anisa’s recommendation, a link has been provided on the Al-Taqwa homepage (under the Activities Tab) on how to protect your home Wi-Fi with a password to prevent strangers from downloading inappropriate/illegal content using your Wi-Fi. Or go to http://www.laptopmag.com/articles/set-a-password-on-your-wi-fi-network-how-to

Inshallah we will have more parent seminars throughout the year and look forward to your attendance.

The AFP also addressed all year 7 and 8 students on online safety. Please ensure to follow up with your children about what they have learnt during this important session and use the opportunity for generating dialogue on safe online practices within your home.

Grade 4 – 6 UpdateA S S A L A M U A L A I K U M P A R E N T S

Alhamdullah, on Friday 20 May at 5pm we welcomed back to Melbourne the 45 grade 6 students who spent a whole week, with the supervision of our dedicated Al- Taqwa teachers, touring the Nation’s Capital, Canberra. Students who attended this tour were the first ever group of students from Al-Taqwa College to go on an interstate camp. The trip was organised to provide our grade 6 students a real life experience related to their History/Civics and Citizenship unit on Federation and Migrants. InshaAllah, we hope to make the Canberra Tour and annual event for our grade 6 students.

“At Canberra we learnt how to vote and enrol ourselves. We learnt about the Parliament House and the 2 special rooms they have; 1 room is called the House of Representatives where they talk about Bills and Laws and the other room is for the Senates where they confirm the Bill. We also went on a mountain called Mount Ainslie from which we saw the Parliament House and all the City”. T A L I S H A 6 F

“The Canberra trip was full of excitement and fun. The War Memorial had a museum beneath it which had real things from the war. At the top there were the names of soldiers that dies in the war and everyone placed a Poppy between the names out of respect for the people who died. The day at the War Memorial ended with the Last Post”.M A H M O U D 6 A

On Friday 22 April, selected Captains and Vice Captains visited the Shrine of Remembrance to participate in Melbourne Legacy’s 85th ANZAC Commemoration for students.“The Shrine of Remembrance was a great way to remember those soldiers who fought for their country and risked their lives. One of the highlights for me on the day were the jets flying above our heads”. H I N D 6 C

“The Shrine of remembrance is an event to honor the fallen soldiers. The Australian Air Force Leader came along with 5 war jets zooming over us all. During the ceremony, there were also tons of stories to be shared about the war”. D A N I E L 6 D

In week 6, our grade 5 boys completed three days of horse riding, archery and bike riding at Saddle On in Lovely Banks.

“Everyone was excited about going horse-riding for the first time. The BMX riding was very fun even though some of the bikes were quite big. On the first day I had Bumper, I learnt that you should not get too close to other horses when you are on a horse or else the other horses will kick the horse you are on and you might get injured. The best part for me was the animal nursery farm because I got to hold snakes, rats and other farm animals”. M U H A M M A D 5 F

“My horse was Micky. At first he was a little hard to control, then after that he got used to me and he started following my instructions and allowed me to control him. Archery was my favourite activity because I got a bull’s eye on the second and third day”. A B D U L R A H M A N 5 F

Upcoming activities for the Upper Primary Department include:• Grade 5 girl’s horse riding and archery lessons at

Saddle On throughout week 7.

• Grade 4 students team building activities at Task Works 31st May and 1st June.

• Al- Taqwa Round Robin Debating Day run by the Association of Victoria 3rd August.

• Semester 1 exams for Maths and English will be taking place in week 8, while LOTE and religion exams will be running in week 9. A reminder that there will be minimal homework given to students during the month of Ramadan.

• The last day for the “Before and After School” sports during term 2, will be June 2nd due to the Ramadan timetable.

We would like to wish you all a Ramadan Mubrak and May Allah (swt) accept your fasting, worship and dua during the Holy Month of Ramadan.R I M A K A N J ,Head of Teacher & Student Services Grades 4–6O L G A R A M A H I , Assistant Head Grades 4–6

Year 7 – 8A S S A L A M U A L A I K U M D E A R P A R E N T S , G U A R D I A N S A N D S T U D E N T S

As usual the Secondary Department is very busy organising excursions, incursions and different activities for our students. The Year 7 students had a science incursion, where students were actively engaged in experiments and fun activities performed by the presenter.

Our Year 8 students went on an excursion to Scienceworks and attended workshops on electricity, magnets and movement.

The Year 7 and 8s attended Cyber-safety workshops delivered by the Australian Federal Police on the using the internet safely and the dangers of Cyberbullying. All students were encouraged to be wise in using social media as a tool of communicating with their friends and refrain from following or having friends they do not know. I urge all parents to supervise their children at all times and be vigilant whenever your child is using social media and look for signs of any change in their behaviour. Parents also are encouraged to limit the time of internet use at home, as children are online for long periods of time at home which has an adverse effect on their concentration, health and studies.

The school has started its fundraising campaign this month for the Cancer Council Foundation. Merchandise has been sold to raise funds for this good cause. Students were also encouraged to give donations, especially as we are approaching the blessed month of Ramadan. Other exciting fundraising activities are planned for this year. Our Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students sat for their NAPLAN this month and all went well alhamdulillah. Results will be released sometime in August, where they will be analysed to improve students learning and standards.

We still have issues with students not adhering to the Uniform Policy and we are expecting your full support and cooperation. As the days are becoming colder, we urge parents to buy their children their winter jumpers and blazers, as students have started wearing all sorts of jumpers to school which is totally unacceptable.Lastly, the blessed month of Ramadan is approaching, the Month of Qur’an and Ibadah. Let us utilise this month in coming closer to Allah (swt).

Student Leadership WorkshopOn the 20th of May the Primary and Secondary Student Leaders participated in a Leadership Workshop. The students were given an insight into what their role is as a leader, how to plan events for students and also the qualities of a good leader. The workshop took them through key skills associated with leadership including communication, meetings, problem solving and the art of delegation. Through this the students learned the skills required to be effective leaders. The day was very effective for the students. I would like to thank Lucy Verwey, Maha Saleh and the presenter, Daniel for a wonderful day.

Safety CornerD E A R A L - T A Q W A C O L L E G E F A M I L Y , We are moving into the colder months of the year so do please ensure that your children are equipped appropriately including clean, warm clothing, footwear in good, clean condition to prevent water from puddles getting in. Hygiene is also very important, make sure your children have enough tissues and teach them to wash their hands with water as much as possible particularly after eating, sneezing, blowing their nose and also after using the bathrooms. A healthy, nutritious diet filled with healthy, fruits and vegetables and lots of water will also help to ward away the and flus and protect us. On serious matter, bullying, harassment, threats, violence, defaming towards any one at the College is not appropriate and will not be tolerated. We are a wonderful family community and need to work together to be respectful, take pride in our community, provide care, support and understanding to live and grow in peace and harmony. Thank you,

Big Science Big FunAlhamdulillah the science incursion ‘Big Science Big Fun’ for the year 7s organised by the Secondary Science Department on the 27th of April 2016 was a successful one. The incursion covered curriculum content for the students in an engaging manner. This was evident in the enthusiasm and willingness our students showed to participate in the activities and also when answering and responding to the presenter’s questions. The incursion sparked our learners’ inquiry skills which made them ask the presenter very interesting questions. A few comments from our budding scientists: “All the year 7 students including me were amazed at the experiments the presenter showed us!.” – A F R I N S H A I K

“One of the experiments he showed us, was involved with a balloon (dummy head) being deflated because it was dipped in nitrogen. But as Ben took the frost off it began to blow up on itself and looked like a perfect balloon. I learnt lot of new things” – A L - S U H A I L A

“I enjoyed the science incursion... I learnt lot of things like when pressure is spread evenly it does not hurt.” – Z E I N A B A B D I K A D I R
