4th Jan Annual QCT Quiz NightThere were 9 teams attending from various parts of Quedgeley, with loyal followers and new faces attending. The questions were read by Mike Skidmore, Vice Chair of QCT, who stepped in at late notice. The questions were not difficult as there were 2 General Knowledge rounds, and the scores were very close. The winners this year were the 4 Amigos, good job there were no mathematical question as the 4 Amigos comprised of 5 people! QCT would like to thank the Pearce & Gills families who very kindly helped clear up and everyone else who took the time to attend. A good time was had by all and QCT look forward to welcoming all back next year.

Beech Green Primary School“Believe Grow Persevere Succeed”
Dear Readers,
This month saw the second of our school Philosophy 4 Children (p4c) training ses-sions in school. We worked with Jason from thephiliosphyman.com earlier in the year, to develop strategies to encourage our children to think philosophically, to rea-son and to debate. Since then, we have been holding regular P4C lessons in our classrooms, often linked to whole school assemblies or our topic work, where the children have been developing their oracy skills. In a short space of time, we have seen a big increase in confidence in many of our children, with lots of them becoming more and more willing to talk in front of their classmates and to challenge the views of others. At Beech Green, we believe that P4C will have a huge impact on our chil-dren, allowing them to imagine, to reason, to listen and to explore. We want our chil-dren to leave us being confident, thoughtful and able to provide well rounded views, and we can already see that P4C is helping us to achieve this. We have been hugely impressed with the maturity, the sensitivity and the reasoning skills of our children, often discussing some really challenging questions and creating thought provoking questions of their own. The teachers have been very excited to think of some “big questions” to introduce to the children later in the term – what do you think?

In February a regular and popular speaker at our Club - Pete Wilson from the BBC - gave us a talk which he entitled "Forty-one years in Nylons!". At school he had always been interested in science and when he was 16 years of age he started work at British Nylon Spinners at Brockworth as a Junior Process Trainee.
The name - NYLON - had been conceived to represent New York and London. It had been discovered that when coal was dissolved it formed a fibre which had the properties of great strength and elasticity. Pete explained the processes carried out in the manufacture of nylon from one end of the factory to the other all of which he was trained in over the course of two years. Having explained the sequence of these processes he related several interesting and amusing - and sometimes dangerous - incidents that had occurred during his time there. Today the nylon processed at Brockworth is used solely for making airbags.
At our first meeting in March the Village Hall was almost full with one or two new peo-ple having joined our Club at each of our meetings recently and thereby gradually swelling the membership. After the Club's business had been dealt with members enjoyed three quizzes, each with a different topic, which gave everyone a chance to shine in one if not all of them. Our main activity on this occasion was an "American Supper" where each person contributed a plate of food to the buffet table. The food was exceptionally delicious and seemed to be enjoyed with a cup of tea by every-one. It was deemed a success.
We meet at Quedgeley Village Hall on the first and third Tuesdays of each month and members should arrive at 1.30 p.m. For more details please contact Laura Tremble on 01452 690976 (mobile 07774200191) or Sue Lovell on 01452 724620.

Parent, Baby and Toddler ‘Drop –in’ St. James Church Quedgeley Every Tuesday 9.30am -11.00am
https://www.facebook.com/StJamesChatterbox/
Last month your Editor mentioned how groups within the area could apply for grants to help them provide a service to the community.
It was five years ago when Chatterbox opened its doors. The Rector Canon Fr. John was keen that the church should be open to the community and the idea of a parent/toddler ‘drop in’ came to mind.
When Chatterbox began in April 2013 we realised it would be a challenge, as our toys were few and far between. We were assisted in the early days by the Q Club who kindly lent us toys each week. Although we were grateful, it was a struggle as at 7.30am every week we would take our cars round to the Q Club, collect the toys, off load at the church and then there was the return journey at 11.00am.
We decided this couldn’t continue, yet our numbers although small, we could see were beginning to grow, I applied to Quedgeley Community Trust for a set up grant and awarded just over £300. We were then able to purchase a few slides, push-chairs and various other toys. As the numbers grew we were able to replenish the toys from our own funds. I am pleased to say that five years on Chatterbox continues to be successful and provides a much needed resource to the community. All our helpers are volunteers and have been with us since we opened.
Without Quedgeley Community Trust and consequently without Quedgeley News (which generates the income) we would probably still be struggling or ceased to exist by now. This is a success story, so huge thanks to both Quedgeley Community Trust and Quedgeley News for all your help.
Jackie HallOrganiser Chatterbox.

Here are two stats few people know which I find revealing.
The first is that Gloucester’s employment rate is at 80.1%, the fifth highest of any of the 63 cities in the UK. We’re just behind Oxford and ahead of Bristol and Ex-eter. That is punching above our weight (as the seventh smallest city), and shows a huge turnaround from ten years ago when we lost 6,000 jobs in business from the Great Recession. Our jobs growth, not least through new and expanding busi-nesses around Quedgeley, has been a success story we should do nothing to risk and everything to support – including better transport infrastructure.
The second is that whereas ten years ago there were 36 playgrounds in the city there are now 75. More than double the number of playgrounds since 2010, includ-ing seven in Kingsway (one of which opened last year). This shows a City Council that cares about community facilities for the young, builds them into planning per-missions, and delivers them – despite funding pressures.
Both of these are encouraging stats, but some things are harder to measure, like the amount and value of volunteering. Quedgeley News, the Kingsway Fun Run and Kingsway Big Lunch, Chit Chat in St James’s Church, Q Club and a hundred other groups in Quedgeley are created and run by volunteers. The same is true of councillors on Quedgeley Town Council and the committee of Kingsway Residents Association, and governors of schools. You all make a huge difference to the sense of belonging to a community, not just living on a housing estate. It’s volunteers who sort out the litter that should go in bins but instead blows outside the shopping centre.
I spoke about the importance of local charities and volunteers in Parliament recently and the difference they make to local pride and eventually on mental health, men-tioning some of Gloucester’s great examples, which you can see here: https://bit.ly/2XlWfYB
Lastly just to congratulate Severn Vale School’s expansion (on time and within budget), and well done again to Field Court Junior and Kingsway Primary Schools for their recent Key Stage 2 test results. The percentage of pupils achieving ex-pected standards in reading, writing and mathematics increased significantly for both. Getting those skills early helps ensure the next generation has the results and skills to keep attracting great employers here, which in turn helps our high employ-ment rate.

Hello from Wild Hogs.
Well, we’re into April and our local hedgehogs will be out of hibernation getting on with their lives. We’ve overwintered quite a few in the hospital and will be releasing them back to where they were found. This year, with such a mild winter, some of those in the hospital never hibernated and it seems as if some of those outside didn’t either – we had a handful of admissions in January and February.
Now in spring, you can support hogs living in your area by leaving out some dried cat food with a shallow dish of clean water. Please also be mindful of the dangers in your garden: strimmers, netting, dogs, ponds and bonfires claim lives every year though we do our best to save any casualties brought to us. If you see a hedgehog during the day that is wobbly, laying out or with obvious injuries, please give us a call for advice. We have a lot of events planned for this summer, including our Open Day on August 10th. .

Our March speaker told us all about 18th century papercutting and silhouettes done by his ancestors.
He explained that he comes from a family of hoarders and has diaries, shopping lists and receipts from centuries ago. Very intricate papercuts were found between the pages of diaries he was going through, he framed them and brought them along for us to see.
Our craft group will make a stepped Easter card. Our new theatre and cinema group will see Mary Queen of Scots at the Guildhall and lunch will be at the Bumble Bee.A walking group will launch in April and our usual Knit and Natter will be taking placeWe look forward to our mystery tour, a train trip with cream tea on board and our Days away in Durham.

Once again we attended a funeral this time for Mr Les Mason a former branch and Tuesday Club member Les was a ex Royal Artillery and WWII P.O.W. in Greece. His funeral was processed from Churchdown to Coney Hill by outriders of the Royal British Legion Riders Branch. The Cheltenham Branch Standard and Hardwicke and District standard bearer carried the Royal Engineers standards and Bill Bratty said the exhortation. Our Standard was unavailable as it had been sent away to have the 2018 Great Pilgrimage Commemorative emblem added. On 3rd March 26 members and friends went to visit The Royal Air Force Museum at RAF Cosford to see the wonderful display of aircraft through the 100 years of the RAF although the weather was wet and windy we all had a good day as most of the exhibits are in heated hangars. The Cold War exhibition is particularly worth seeing, and the entrance is free. This year there will be a large Armed Forces Day parade and event to be held in Gloucester on 29th June. Hardwicke & District RBL have decided to fully support this event. Further details will be available soon. The next Branch meeting will be on April 10th at 7 30pm when there will be a Demen-tia Awareness Talk. Everyone welcome.

Treasure Seekers Disco
One of the very first things introduced at Treasure Seekers, which is still going strong 8 years on, is a disco for adults with learning disabilities. The discos now take place 3 evenings each week on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. The Wednes-day evening is a karaoke disco giving people the opportunity to get up and sing their favourite song. The music is a mix of current chart hits and old favourites, ensuring there is something to suit everyone’s taste. The discos are held at Kingfisher Church in Moor Street, Tredworth and take place from 7pm to 8.30pm. There is an entry fee of £2.50 but carers go free. During the evening there are a range of snacks and drinks available to purchase. The evenings are always really popular with over 450 people attending each week. To ensure smooth running of the discos, there is a brilliant team of staff and volunteers on hand - about 40 of them! These evenings are great fun - a fabulous way of meeting up with friends and getting to meet new people too.
Proving extremely popular at the moment are our themed disco nights. They run over one week every month and everyone is encouraged to dress up and get in-volved and sometimes guests perform on stage too! The next 3 themed disco weeks are 1st, 3rd and 4th April - Michael Jackson; 22nd, 24th and 25th April - Disney and on 27th, 29th and 30th May - The Spice Girls.
Why not have a look at the photos on our facebook page to see what joyous, fun-filled evenings they are. If you want to get involved at any level, either come along on a Wednesday evening or phone 01452 307201 option 3 to speak to Leah Whelen who oversees the disco.

Quedgeley Town Council News
We start by welcoming newly co-opted councillor, Mr Liam Harries who will be serv-ing the Severnvale Ward. Liam brings with him a wealth of knowledge and is hope-fully going to be instrumental in upgrading the Town Council’s website and other areas of social media. Liam has already become part of the team very quickly and we’re sure that he will soon start to feel at home. This now leaves only one vacancy so if you are interested in joining this very enthusiastic and proactive team then please contact the Town Clerk on 01452 721552.
At the time of writing we are fast approaching our Annual Easter Egg Hunt which don’t forget is being held at the Local Nature Reserve off Curtis Hayward Drive on Monday 22nd April 2019. The event starts at 10.00am prompt and finishes once all the eggs have been found and all the Easter Egg Hunt packs have been completed and eggs allocated. This year we have two ‘name the bunny’ opportunities which is always popular with the youngsters. Refreshments will also be available for the grownups. Please come along, this is a free family event and will go ahead whatever the weather, although we hope the sun will be shining!! A full write up on this event will feature in the next Quedgeley News.
Your Town Councillors recently attended a seminar in which they were encouraged to think about goals and ambitions for Quedgeley. It was a successful event with various ideas coming forward and ultimately producing a 3-year strategic plan in or-der to better support you, our residents, and further promote Quedgeley as a Town. Over the next few years, various new initiatives will be looked at and we urge our residents to get behind us in order to help us provide for you more support and a bigger voice. Bus stops/grass verges/bins/increasing Saturday Surgeries to name a few are some of the services that the Town Council are eager to maintain for our residents and this is better for you because if there is a problem you can come straight to us, achieving a quicker service all round. This is not an overnight change but slowly we are looking to promote the council in such a way that more residents know where to go to if they have a problem. Exciting times and your councillors are keen to make changes.
You should have by now seen an increase in patrols around the Schools. Following the introduction of double yellow lines and the ongoing problems with people still parking on them, Enforce-ment Officers and the Police are working together in order to educate parents at school pickup and drop off times. The Town Council flagged this problem up at their seminar and have opted to make this a priority matter. Following our plea in the previous edition of Quedgeley News, we urge you all to park considerately both for your benefit, the safety of our children and the benefit of local residents.

Your Town Council a few years ago attended the Fieldcourt Infant School in order to provide a fun presentation to the children about what the council does, services it provides and the Easter Bunny even made an appearance. More recently we were delighted to be invited to Severn Vale School to speak to the Year 10 pupils about the first tier of local government and all things associated. A far more grown up presen-tation and a great opportunity to engage with our younger generation. Our next stop is Beechgreen School, you could call it a bit of a QTC roadshow!!

Wow! March was super busy around the school, with World Book Day, Harry Pot-ter Maths Day, Take One Book and not forgetting Red Nose Day. There were year group trips to Cadbury World, Warwick Castle and to London. Phew! I’m exhausted just thinking about all the amazing things the children have been exploring and learn-ing about this term. Now in April, with springtime upon us, the children are enjoying using and learning in the new outdoor Forest school shelter. Year 1 are also looking forward to the Easter Multi-skills festival, whereby they will be showing off their fan-tastic Easter bonnets. Have a nice break over Easter and enjoy the spring sunshine.
We would also like to say a ‘BIG THANK YOU’ to Taylor Wimpey for their donation of £250.00 in light of World Book Day. The donation will go towards purchasing some more amazing books for the school library.
Dear Readers,
This term, Swan and Kingfisher met a superhero called Supertato and his nemesis Evil Pea. The children have been exploring the story of Supertato and how he helps to save the Veggies. This links really well to the topic of people who help us. The children have been very unhappy with Evil Pea’s antics and have been on the case, they have used the super headquarters to investigate some of the pesky Evil Pea’s plans and have designed, written about and made traps to catch him. They have been exploring adjectives to help describe the characters, ready to adapt the story and make it their own. There have also been some pea related maths problems, in which the children have enjoyed using their new skills to solve them.
As the children explore the story and the ways that Supertato helps his friends, they are also looking at the people within our community who help us. From doctors and firefighters to postal workers and care staff, they have begun to look into the many roles of the people around us and how they help. The children look forward to finding out what else Supertato and Evil Pea will get up to over the weeks.
In Year 1 the children have returned from an exciting trip to Warwick Castle. They learnt about different parts of the castle building e.g. the watchtower, the keep and the dungeons. They watched a magnificent birds of prey display whilst eating their lunch and enjoyed applying all of their history knowledge about Henry VIII and other famous Kings and Queens. This was fantastic and magical end to their lovely ‘Tell Me A Story’ theme!
Page 39
Quedgeley News is produced and distributed by volunteers
The children in Year 2 have loved learning about who eats who in their food web work, whilst exploring the Amazon rainforest. They have created some beautiful tie dye t-shirts and head dresses for their end of theme carnival. The children shared this with their parents/carers in a carnival afternoon.Next month Year 3 are off on a trip to explore London....by coach, underground and foot. They are hoping to take in all the sights around Westminster as well as the Natural History Museum and British Museum. Hopefully the weather will be good to them so that they can see all the sights and have a picnic lunch in Hyde park.Year 4 have been really enjoying learning about their theme ‘Beans Means Money’ this term. After a fascinating trip to Cadbury World, the children have been able to apply their knowledge of Fair Trade and production in more practical contexts. In Science, they have learned about solids, liquids and gases and how materials can change state. Through a range of experiments the children have been able to work scientifically and suggest ways of improving these through effective evaluations. In History, the children have looked at the Mayans and they have been amazed to learn about their cultural accomplishments. They were also surprised to discover that they even used cocoa beans as a form of currency!Year 5 have been busy doing lots of learning through books. A group of pupils represented the school at Kingsholm, acting out and presenting the plot of one of the Horrid Henry books and learning about a range of children's books from other schools' performances. They have also been taking part in ‘Take One Book Day, that involved lots of beautiful artwork and dressing up as their favourite characters for World Book Day! Year 6 have been hard at work preparing for their upcoming SAT's, but they have had some exciting opportunities outside of this. Year 6 have explored using art to ex-press different emotions, during 'Take One Book Day' and created some inspirational quotes from their favourite books for World Book Day. Here is a list of the Beacon Children’s Centre activities and groups that are currently running. If you would like more information or are considering running a group, please pop in for a chat from 1 – 4pm or email [email protected]. Don’t forget you can also support the Beacon Children’s Centre through Gloucester Lottery. We need your help to keep this facility open.

QUEDGELEY W.I. - MARCH 2019
The Village Hall was full for our March meeting which was due in part to the attend-ance of more new members and visitors and we look forward to even more in the future. We have a team for the forthcoming GFWI Quiz so they must get their brains into gear for that, our monthly Coffee Morning at The Roastery is coming up soon and we are still collecting books and jigsaw puzzles for the Centenary Village Show at Cirencester Park in July. Planning our exhibit for the Centenary Exhibition at the Cathedral in October has started and as the Group Party, also in October, has a 1960s theme hopefully some of us may still have something from that era hiding in our wardrobes!
We welcomed Tracey from Dixie Dot Crafts in Kingsway with her craft demonstra-tion but that was only a small part of her talk. After always being told at school that she was no good at sewing and hating it, some time later she began to really enjoy it, as well as other crafts she tried. Tracey told us about the many ups and downs in her life, which finally led to running her own successful craft shop. She likes to get involved with the local community and wants to nurture the creative side of children and adults and holds craft workshops at her premises in Kingsway. Some of her classes include pottery painting, decopatch (that’s sticking little pieces of decorative paper onto anything from boxes to giraffes), box frames, wood art, sewing and cro-chet. She demonstrated some block printing onto a tea towel which is yet another of the crafts she teaches. This was a very entertaining talk which is sure to encourage some people to take up one of her crafts.
Our speaker for April will be Reverend Nicholas Henderson with his second talk entitled Fulfilment & Farce about Jane Seymour and Anne of Cleeves, two of Henry VIII’s forgotten wives. We had already heard his first talk about another two wives when we learned many fascinating facts so this is sure to be just as amusing and entertaining. Other talks coming up include Internet dating and writing a book, Llan-thony Secunda Reformation and something called Tax, Care and Toyboys! If any of these sound interesting then why not come along?
We meet at Quedgeley Village Hall on the second Wednesday of every month and more details can be found on www.quedgeleywi.co.uk and facebook.com/quedge-leywi.

Dear Parishioners & Friends,
For Christians all over the globe Easter is the most important event in the Christian calendar. At Christmas we celebrated Christ’s birth. At Easter we celebrate Christ’s resurrection from the dead, showing that he conquered death so that our sins will be forgiven and we will receive life eternal. The pathway to Easter begins with Palm Sunday when Jesus entered into the city of Jerusalem. He was revered, applauded and adored. He was something of a celebrity by today’s standards, but by the end of the week the same people were hurling stones and despising him. The tables had turned.
Historians do not dispute the fact that 2,000 years ago a man named Jesus lived, who was a great teacher. He hung on the cross and was crucified. This was not par-ticularly out of the ordinary in those days. Plenty of people suffered the same fate as a punishment. The thing that DOES make him unique is the empty tomb!
Mary Magdalene is reported in John’s gospel as seeing Jesus following his resur-rection. Sceptics question whether she was so overcome by grief that it was an hal-lucination. But there are further reports of the sightings of Jesus both in the gospels and certainly in the letters of Paul to the Corinthians. In Corinthians 1 15 Paul talks of 500 people seeing Jesus following his resurrection. Paul concludes that ‘Christ has been raised’. No one else conquered death only Jesus. This is the foundation of the Christian faith with 2.19 billion people in the world who are followers of Christ today. During the week leading up to Easter Sunday, Saint James’ will be holding a number of services.
Palm Sunday takes place on 14th April our service begins at 10.30am.With the Blessing and distribution of Palm Crosses.
The Good Friday service begins at 2.00pm During which we shall reflect on the crucifixion itself.
Easter Sunday service begins at 10.00am Where we shall witness to the unfolding Joy of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
