Collins Goes Over the Limit for Underland

Have you ever wondered what lies below the earth’s crust? A lake of magma? A lost world full of plants? Not according to Su-zanne Collins, author of the praised Underland Chron-icles. In her debut series, Collins does a marvelous job creating an entirely new view of what thrives right under our own feet. The first title, Gregor the Overlander, begins an epic journey of brother and sister. In it, 12-year-old Gregor is just home watching his baby sister Boots, well Margret re-ally, but she hates that name. When Boots finds a strange vortex in their laundry room air duct, they both get sucked in and their journey begins. The two young heroes find themselves in a strange land called the “Under-land”, the home of many strange creatures, includ-ing bats, rats, and roaches, to name a few. OK, so not really strange, just really big, all about the size of a grown human, which also inhabit this barren land. Not only does Collins master describing this odd place, she follows it up with an even greater sequel, Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane. Here, Gregor must return to the

land which he swore nev-er to return to, in order to fulfill a prophecy which will determine the fate of the entire Underland. Also, this book sets the scene for the final battle, even though it is not for two more books. In the next volume, Gregor and the Curse of the Warmbloods, Gregor and Boots return yet again to help find a cure for a deadly plague threaten-ing the entire Underland. However, this time they have an unexpected travel-er: their mother. If Gregor refuses this time, he will lose the person he loves the most. Plus, this great installment features a shocking plot twist ending. This book leaves a small cliffhanger re-sumed in Gregor and the Marks of Secret, in which Gregor must find what is happening to all the mice of the Underland before they go extinct. All this culminates into the final battle in Gregor

and the Code of Claw. In this masterful finale, Col-lins perfectly ties together all the facts of the previous four installments into one battle that determines the fate of the Underland once and for all. “The key is in the claw,” as the book goes. One amazing portion of this series is that each has its own prophecy. Any-one who has read these books know that the main part of the books center around each event tying in with each prophecy. For those who have not read this outstanding col-lection, pick up a copy of the first book right af-ter reading this review. I absolutely recommend this book for anyone who loves to read. Even for the book-haters, I say pick up a copy today. This series may seem a bit childish at first, but I promise that once anyone gets into it, it will be impossible to let anyone else hold their copy of the book. That is how consuming this series is.

PINK FRIDAYBy Shay BennettReporter

There has been plenty of controversy when it comes to the female rap-per Nicki Minaj. She has been inspiring her fellow “Barbie’s” and “Kens” to step outside of the box and be an individual. She first approached us with her many mix tapes that took us by surprise that she could be that ani-mated. Her newest album release, Pink Friday, has had mixed reactions. Some say that they were let down by her album, but many think that it is the freshest album we have received from a female rapper in a long time. She has the char-acteristics of Lauren Hill as she sings and raps on the same album. On her single “Can anybody hear me? “she said that she was told the world would not comprehend her mixed album. Nicki Minaj proved them wrong when the album sold more than 200,000 copies in the first week. Pink Fri-day was the most antici-pated album for 2010. Pink Friday consists of tracks like Roman Re-venge featuring Eminem, Check it Out featuring Will.I.Am, Moment 4 life featuring Drake, and twelve more tracks. When you are listening to

and twelve more tracks. When you are listening to Minaj album, you get in a zone. The lyrics are real. She lays down music so that everyone can relate. She does not want only females to be her fans. Males can relate her as well. My favorite song on the album is “Did it on’em.” The song shows her cocky side. The song represents her courage to fight against the negativ-ity of people trying to discourage her talent. The whole album is a representation of what she has worked so hard to achieve. Minaj wants to be heard and now she will be. Either you are listen-ing to her to dis her, or you are listening because you are a fan. Either way, you are listening to her. This album is a decla-ration of the “Original Barbie.” Pink Friday is an album that has set new all time high for 2011. Nicki Minaj has outdone her-self, and her fans would be looking forward to her keeping up the good work.

There once was a Kokiri, the ever-young race of the forest, boy named Link. He was the different than all other children of the Kokiri Vil-lage. Sure he had the same green clothes, same pointed ears, even the same hairstyle. How-ever, unlike most other inhabitants of the forest, he did not have his own fairy. This all changed one day when the wise, yet somewhat an-noying fairy, Navi was bestowed unto him. This marked the beginning of a great adventure for the two. They would travel to far lands; encounter many fierce battles, and even a little romance. This is not his story. Our story falls upon me, an odd boy by the name of Mido. I am described

as a very lazy and bossy

Kokiri boy. I and my fairy, Tatl, a pure yellow orb of light with fragile wings were very alike in work ethic, always getting another to do our work. One day, all this would change for the rest of my life, and I would never be the same. Ironi-cally, that day is today.

It all started out as a normal day in the Kokiri Forest. I had been given my chores, and as always,

I convinced the village fool, Dodo, to do my work for me. Every day, I offered Dodo a portion of my food, and every day, I ignored this agreement, yet Dodo was always oblivi-ous to this. My laziness would come around to haunt me for years, I would learn later that day. It all began when I went to the entrance of

the Lost Woods, the home to many

devious creatures. It was forbidden to venture into the woods. Those who went in never escaped, and those who did were never the same again. However, one day the hyper yet quiet Saria, a special friend of mine, dared to travel in to look for her lost friend, Link,

for her lost friend, Link, who had disappeared four years ago that day. She had been talking about it and even tried a few times, but was always too frightened to try. Today, as I had learned from Dodo, she had actually done it. I was shocked beyond all reason, and couldn’t accept the truth. I spent the whole day looking for her, searching every possible spot, even her

secret home on the bridge that marks the border of Kokiri Village and the rest of the world, yet she was nowhere to be found. I knew she wasn’t dead, or the village would have sensed it through a small quake. The only pos-sibility left was the Lost Woods. I knew what I had to do. I had to go in there to rescue her. It was all set. I would leave early that morning, when everyone, even the village elder, The Great Deku Tree, was still fast

asleep. I would only take a few things: some food, a slingshot with Deku Nuts as ammunition, a bottle to collect any water or liquids, and Tatl. I had told Dodo to tell everyone that I was just sleeping, which was normal for me to do on Socializing Day, on which everyone had to talk to a stranger and get to know him or her. I hated this tradition and usually slept in until it was over. However, I would get up extra early and use this excuse to my

advantage. I quietly snuck through the village, not making a sound. Fortu-nately, my hut was close to the entrance. I took a deep breath and entered.
