THE PULSE GOAN OVERSEAS ASSOCIATION, TORONTO

A MESSAGE… Selwyn Collaco, President On behalf of my Executive Committee, I would like to take the opportunity to thank all our members for your continuous support.

The Executive Committee and I are indeed very proud to be a part of the G.O.A., which has been built on a strong foundation laid by the various founding members and previous Committees, who have selflessly dedicated their time towards the betterment of our vibrant Goan community. Our sincere gratitude and appreciation go out to every individual who has helped build and sustain this fantastic organization for the last 45 years.

The new vision of the G.O.A executive committee is to continue building on the achievements of our former Presidents and their Committees, building a platform to allow and maintain an inclusive Goan Community. A platform that would create a sense of pride in our culture and heritage, provide value to our members and promote the socio economic well being of all Goans including our seniors and youth. We are in the process of building a platform that truly belongs to all Goans to form a unified Goan Community which would be leveraged by the next generations to follow and to also provide them with a sense of pride around their Goan Heritage. Let us all come together to build this unified platform for the Goan Overseas Association as without you and your support, this would just not be possible. We must remember – to be heard as a Community, strength is in our numbers and in our people. Together we can make a real difference. The time has arrived for us to move away from the petty differences that keep us stranded in the past and to now move forward as a unified community towards a better future. It is time to demonstrate that we are indeed a progressive Goan Community.

My diverse committee and I have taken upon us a huge mandate to revive the G.O.A. membership to attract the Goan diasporas that originate from Goa, East Africa, Middle East, Mumbai etc. towards forming an united and inclusive community. The first phase towards achieving our mandate was to launch programs that would cater and get the needed attention of our Community. This has been achieved earlier this summer through the resounding success on the revival of Viva Goa, the visit of the Archbishop of Goa His Grace Filipe Neri Ferrao – where a widely attended Fellowship Mass and get together was celebrated in alliance with CGCG, The African Jamboree, Konkan Nite 2015 (celebration of our language, Konkani), Summer Golf, Bringing back the 80’s etc.

As we now move on to the next phases of creating value for our membership by introducing programs such as the new immigrant welcome kit, Professional Development Series for young adults, Job Search Database, Upgrading the membership database to maintain accurate membership details, Business Registry, Sports etc., I would like to appeal to our members to get involved and consider volunteering. We need your help to push this great organization to the next level as we cannot do this on our own.

Lastly, I would like to thank my executive team and all other individuals who have volunteered and have worked tirelessly over the last few months to accomplish what we have this far. They have definitely demonstrated dedication, enthusiasm and desire to serve the community.

Thank You! & Regards,

Selwyn

PROPERTY UPDATE Darrel Carvalho, Vice President Building

Vaughan RezoningThe MTO Phase 2 Environmental Report public consultation was held in June 2015 at which it was reported that the next Public Consultation will be held in December 2015 to incorporate the recommendations from Phase 2 and present the preliminary design for the conceptual preferred route with interchanges. This may result in the release of some of the lands on hold. Following consultation with the Regions and Municipalities the final design is expected in early 2107. The Landowners’ Group is proceeding with whatever studies can be completed to shorten the Block Plan Phase of the rezoning after the release.

Greenbelt The Greenbelt 10 Year review is in progress and following the release of the review criteria, Humphreys Consultants and Beacon Environmental have presented their proposals for lands, based on actual ground studies, to be included within the Greenbelt which could potentially increase the amount of developable land for the G.O.A property which if it is approved, will meet our objective is reduce the amount of Greenbelt on the property and enhance the value of the property available for sale.

Contributors’ Mortgage Bond Redemptions Redemptions in 2015 are being based on the amount approved at the A.G.M $5,256, being the operating surplus in 2104 and redeemed for compassionate grounds applications. To date approx. $3,200 has been redeemed. Any leftover balance will be carried forward to 2016.

Please note that redemptions are only done based on the amount available and approved at the A.G.M. Depending on the amount available, priority is given to the survivors of deceased

contributors and the balance redeemed by a draw from the list of outstanding Bond Holders.

A meeting of outstanding Bond Holders was held on March 1, 2015 and discussed the refinancing options when the Trust Deed Expires on November 9th 2015. As the property is under a development freeze until at least December 2016, see above report, the Greenbelt review is ongoing into 2016 and the rezoning time required, it could be 2017 before the property can be sold. Thus the Bond Holders voted to extend the Trust Deed and its Conditions, until November 9th 2020. The Bond Holders Trustees were re-elected for another five years.

Thank you to the Trustees Eric De Souza, Dr. Horace Vaz and Jonas Noronha for the work done on behalf of the Bond Holders and to Ralph DeSouza for being the Treasurer for the G.O.A (Toronto) Ltd since 1999 and continuing to manage the property, maintain the property accounts and the Bond Holders account.

VOLUNTEER!

CHRISTMAS COMES EARLY FOR G.O.A. (TORONTO) RETIREES By Armand Rodrigues

Let there be no misunderstanding. Bringing forward Christmas in no way implies a condescending gesture towards aging members, or a way to avoid the vagaries of the weather. With banquet

halls being in seasonal demand, clubs are left with no choice but to book anything available at a reasonable cost, as near to the big day as possible, without clashing with sister institutions. That explains why the

G.O.A. had its X’mas Fantasy Dance for retirees, on November 15, 2015. The occasion was at the Pearl Banquet Hall in Mississauga. It turned out to be a gorgeous day and the absence of snow for Christmas was of no consequence.

In keeping with the theme of Christmas, the chairs were draped in red and the centre-pieces on tables were tall make-believe conical fir trees in sparkling splendor. A special touch came with X’mas cookies for all, courtesy of Joan Francis. The hall was cozy and just right. Everybody seemed to know everybody else and this made for ambience that was priceless. The dress code was aimed at bringing back familiar memories of fashions in the 60’s. And, indeed, a number of people emulated the bell-bottoms, beehive hairdos and hippie garbs of those bygone days. If a band creates the mood for any occasion, the Q.C.60’s Revival Band provided the right generation-appropriate vibrations. The quartet of Errol & Tom Francis, William Fernandes and Polly Dias, had the remarkable voice of Natalie Rodrigues to enhance their music. They were in total sync

with the sensibilities of the audience and put forth nostalgic fare greatly appreciated by all. The shakers and movers of yore showed that they still had it in them by strutting their stuff with gusto on the dance floor. Fabian Correia and Mattie Dias, dressed as Elvis and Priscilla respectively, were in their element jiving to an Elvis Presley number.

Song sheets were placed on all tables, and Christmas carols sung by all, helped elevate the Christmassy spirit. There were prizes for best period-outfits and for spot dances. And there were coveted gifts won in a raffle. Understandably, some nice older gals seemed somewhat bashful about sitting on Santa’s lap for a selfie. Mrs. Claus was less intimidating for the naughty boys. The Clauses were Dennis Pereira and Margaret DeSouza.

The appetizers and buffet lunch were of the Indian persuasion. Typically Goan was the “kunswar” that included: “cocado”, “pinagre”, “hot-kotem”, “choniam-doce”, “froot-cake”. These creations came from the kitchens of Pam Albuquerque, Muriel Pereira, Edith Dias, Edna Mathias, Enid Rodrigues, Eurema Collaco, Essie George and Fiona Pinto DeSouza.

Delphine Francis did justice in her role as M.C., especially with her cool demeanor and Greta Dias, Director-Goa Retirees & Friends, used her flair for planning, organizing, and mobilizing her support team, to good advantage and happy fruition, with the best interests of retirees always in mind.

VIVA GOA! By Norman Da Costa COLLACO ONE STEP AWAY FROM ACHIEVING HIS UNITED DREAM

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes Viva Goa returned with a bang. The reviews are in and the second coming of the much-anticipated Goan festival since 2008 can best be described in one word: “Wow.”

More than 3,500 filtered through the gates at the sprawling Croatian Recreational Park in Mississauga and some 500 had to be turned back as tickets were already sold out and every parking spot was taken.

With so many in attendance, including Bonnie Crombie, the mayor of Mississauga, Akhilesh Mishra, the Consul General of India, and City of Mississauga councillor Chris Fonseca. This day-long event was a smash hit and again proved what a small group of dedicated Goans can accomplish through team work. Team work was also behind the success of the Goan Overseas Association’s first foray into this music-cum-sports festival in

1997, the brainchild of then social secretary Joan do Rosario, at the indoor Downsview Hangar that was converted into an indoor soccer

facility by my old buddy Francois Glassman, a well-known French soccer coach, manager and player agent. Viva Goa was a runaway success since its inception with Goans from across the world making the annual trek to Toronto until rising rental fees coupled

with the club’s financial situation led to its demise.

Talks of reviving this showcase event had been bandied around for a few years that’s until earlier this year when incoming G.O.A. president Selwyn Collaco decided the time for talk was over.

THE PULSE GOAN OVERSEAS ASSOCIATION, TORONTO

In a little less than three months, Collaco and 12 of his committee members including long-time stalwarts Greta Dias, Fiona Pinto-De Souza and Linda D’Sa put pen to paper and forged ahead. Seira Furtado assisted with various aspects given her knowledge and experience having organized past Viva Goa events for 10 years. The team was a mix of experience and young blood drawn from India, the Middle East and East Africa. They included Sharleen Quintal, Ryan De Sa, Craig Desouza ,

Riener Gracias, Edgar Faleiro, Sylda Gracias, Olavio

DaCosta and Marshal Fernandes. The beaming smiles on their faces and that of the many volunteers on Aug. 8 told the story of their success.

Collaco, who currently holds a senior management position at CIBC and doubles up as leader of Goa Amigos, one of the leading dance bands in the country, knows through experience Goans love to party. Organize one and give them what they love most - music, dancing, food and drinks – and they will crawl out of the woodwork to be there.

But he was under no illusions of the enormity of staging such an event considering G.O.A’s limited bank balance. He was willing to take the risk. Collaco along with his team worked 12-hour days roping in sponsors, volunteers, top-notch local and overseas performers, bands and

vendors and Collaco’s musical contacts here and in Goa jumped on the bandwagon.

Sponsorship was paramount for Viva Goa’s success and CIBC mortgage advisor Andy D’Mello came on board as a platinum sponsor along with other corporates such as Accenture, Polaris, De Sa & Associates and Desouza

Financials. That’s the financial boost the G.O.A. was looking for to kick-start this project.

Some 30 kiosks circled the massive stage and

there was ample room in the middle to sit down, mingle with friends and take in the various acts and dances. The longest lineups were at the food stalls with two restaurants and vendors offering the usual Goan delicacies such as sorpotel, sanna, pork vindaloo, fish curry and rice, shrimp and chicken biryani. Others served the ever-popular chourico-pao and, needless to say, they did a roaring trade. The vendors admitted to be overwhelmed by the sheer size of the crowd and kept running out of some dishes much to the chagrin of the hungry

throng. Somehow they managed to deliver and will obviously be better prepared the next time. The bar, at one end of the grounds, to no one’s surprise, was extremely well patronized. Unfortunately, for the G.O.A. the Croatian hosts may have been tipped off about the Goans’ penchant for being called to the bar and decided they would like to take charge of the money-spinning tinto.

As expected, the waft of Goan sausages and pickles filled the air as a number of tents sold the usual fare. Other stalls that attracted attention included the books tent, where I understand Goan cookbooks were a hot seller; G.O.A. Toastmasters and Toronto Police that was manned by our very own Goan boys who provided much-needed security. G.O.A. also had its own pavilion that flogged CDs and also signed up 60 new members. The pavilion run by Carom Canada caught everyone’s attention as some 30 or so players pitted their skills against each other on a sultry day. The opposite field staged a large number of teams took part in a soccer tournament that was described as “competitive and high calibre.” There was also a children’s section where crafts, balloon designs, face painting and even a magician were on hand to keep the young ones entertained.

All eyes though were focused on the stage where the club’s Director of Culture Marshal Fernandes, in our traditional language Konkani, and co-host Seira Furtado, a prominent face of

past Viva Goa events, did an excellent job in keeping things moving smoothly.

The young local Goan talent was simply amazing and there’s a great future for Jason Lobo and Stephanie Braganza. The professionals were just that. Collaco used his musical connection to land Goa’s very own Sonia Shirsat and Sharmilla Dias, one of Mumbai’s top pop artists, who captivated the crowd. Sonia has established

herself as one of Goa’s very best behind the iconic Lorna and has a huge following in Portugal where her Fados sung in Portuguese have been all the rage. There were several skits, traditional Goan dances by young children and the West End Seniors, appearances by some local bands and the ever-popular comedy

skits. The dynamic duo of Serah Barbosa and Samson Santimano, who have established themselves as the foremost Goan comedians in North America, were outstanding.

When Collaco took office earlier this year he had a two-fold vision. He was hell-bent on reviving Viva

Goa by engaging the community and he came through with flying colours.

The second could be tougher. But Collaco has the confidence in his ability to meet the challenging goal of forming “an inclusive Goan community.” Few doubt he won’t succeed.

He’s determined to bring in the various Goan communities from India, the Middle East and East Africa under one umbrella – the Goan Overseas Association (G.O.A).

Page 12: THE PULSE GOAN OVERSEAS ASSOCIATION, TORONTO › pulse-pdf › Pulse Nov 2015 GOA_FV.pdf · THE PULSE GOAN OVERSEAS ASSOCIATION, TORONTO ... THE PULSE GOAN OVERSEAS ASSOCIATION, TORONTO

THE PULSE GOAN OVERSEAS ASSOCIATION, TORONTO

His message is simple. “The time has now come for all Goans to be a united community,’’ he said.

This can be done by associating ourselves to a universal brand as the G.O.A. – a brand that we can relate to and represent our community as a true platform for all Goans,’’ he said.

We need to move beyond the social aspect of dances. That’s not what should define us, we

need to provide more to the younger generation so that they can be proud of their culture and Goan heritage.”

For years, the G.O.A. has been perceived as an association for East Africans and that’s resulted in others setting up their own organizations. With the Goa-born Collaco now at the helm, let us hope his dream of a united Goan association will be achieved but, he will need the co-operation and assistance of all the parties.

A CELEBRATION WITH THE ARCHBISHOP OF GOA In early September, the G.O.A. in collaboration with the C.G.C.G. were honoured to host the Archbishop of Goa, his Grace, the Most Rev. Filipe Neri Ferrao. The Archbishop was on a North American trip

commencing in Washington DC with visits to Toronto and Virginia.

To commemorate his visit, a mass was celebrated at St. Joseph’s Church, Mississauga. The celebration of the mass was both, beautiful and reflective, with all the solemnity befitting an Archbishop. Many Goan clergy from parishes in Toronto were present to con-celebrate the mass. Goan members of the Knights of Columbus, from various councils, brought regality to the occasion and the choir under the guidance of Evelyn D’Souza sung hymns in both, Konkani and English. Despite the short notice, the mass was well

attended and the community came together to give thanks for our blessings. Following the mass, a reception was held in the church hall. Selwyn Collaco, (President, G.O.A.) made a presentation to his Grace, followed by speeches from Dr. Colin Saldanha and Archbishop Ferrao. His Grace, concluded his address by requesting for prayers for Venerable Angelo D’Souza’s progress to sainthood.

Our special thanks to Rev. Marc-Andre Campbell, pastor of St. Joseph’s, Turner and Porter (Hurontario), and the many attendees who donated finger foods. Finally, our sincere appreciation and thanks to the generous donors for the Special Mass Collection. The funds will enable Archbishop Ferrao to carry out special projects in Goa.

Truly, we as the Goan community in Toronto should be proud that we have the opportunity to make a mark in the land of our heritage.

BRINGING BACK THE 80S! By Linda D’Sa Many of the children, young adults who participated in many G.O.A events of the 80’s have disappeared and we do not get a chance to meet with them, only at sad occasions. This had to change and the time felt right…. So “Bringing back the 80’s” was born. Reaching out to the many who were involved in the Executive, Field Hockey, Track & Field, Young Adults, Fashion Fantasy, Brown’s Bay, boat cruises, Harbour front, Pavllions or the several dances that were mainly

held at Lion’s Club.

However, the night was open to ALL guests who enjoyed the variety of 80’s music and they were NOT disappointed with the Fantastic music that was played by DJ Fatzz & DJ Kaya. Dance floor was constantly packed with non-stop dancing and many people “busting” out moves from back in the days… AMAZING! Many people not seeing each other for 25-30 years--- oh what a great feeling!

Those who dressed the 80’s style showed off their footwork on the dance floor.

Since we were not able to get the New kids on the Block, our very own, ”OLD kids on the block” provided us with

an 80’s performance. My special thanks to Harold Fernandes from Kitchener, who listened to my idea and tapped on people to participate. Happily, Trevor Lamas, Ken Menezes and

Larissa Reed agreed to come on board. They had to dust of the instruments and gel together quickly to make this “gig” a reality.

My special Thank you to my FABALOUS looking committee: Yvonne Furtado-Rodrigues, Arlene O’Brien, Fiona Lobo, Larissa Reed, Jennifer Noronha-Pinto, Ken Menezes & Seira Furtado for making this a rousing success. Also, special mention and Thanks to Michelle Fonseca, Vincent Mathias, Jude Furtado, Bosco D’Sa & Denise Moraes for their assistance.

Stay tuned for future events… NOT TO MISS!!

G.O.A. ANNIVERSARY BALL Our 45th Anniversary took place on April 18th. The G.O.A Association was under the leadership of its interim President – Glynis Viegas who carried out the responsibilities of the Association with great pride and determination to ensure a smooth transition.

Kevin Pereira, Board of Trustees gave a short speech. The community was touched, as his late father Terence Pereira was a proud, staunch, supporter of the G.O.A from the beginning.

Kevin introduced the new President- Selwyn Collaco. Selwyn provided some insight on his plans for the community and how to build upon the great works of the past that will lead us into the future by becoming in inclusive Association that will have strength in numbers.

We were also honored to give out the Victor Abreu award. The 2015 award was bestowed upon Charlene D’Mello, who is currently a York University student and works with young children with disabilities She is an “A” student and goes by the motto—To Who MUCH IS GIVEN, MUCH IS EXPECTED.

G.O.A. RETIREES PRESENT AN AFRICAN JAMBOREE By Armand Rodrigues

Going back in time, the locals were getting restless with anticipation. The village “ngoma” beats coming from the nearby “shamba”, sent a call to one and all to participate in a “pombe” party that day.

The analogy holds true of the “Hakuna Matata” African Jamboree held on September 7, 2015 at the Kalyan Centre in Mississauga. The drumbeat came from the Goan Overseas Association (Toronto),that organized the show. It was of particular significance to old-timers who had spent some glorious years within

ear-shot of the “ngomas”, at their own clubs. They turned out in a huge number. To their credit, many rummaged through their wardrobes and came out donned in African garb. These Africanders were transported back to the

halcyon days before political turmoil rudely uprooted them and they were able to find welcome refuge in Canada. The clarion call also reached the ears of non-Africanders. The verdict was that they enjoyed the show immensely.

The interpretations and depictions at the Jamboree had an air of vibrancy. The mood was set by quaint African proverbs displayed at the entrance to the hall. To remind people of the street-vendors in Africa,

everybody got “karanga” in a newspaper cone. They also got “ugali” with cooking instructions, in individual jars. There was a fashion show where, Joan Rosario, the narrator, gave the audience the low-down on each of the colourful African costumes shown off by men and women, in a parade down the middle of the hall,

Page 16: THE PULSE GOAN OVERSEAS ASSOCIATION, TORONTO › pulse-pdf › Pulse Nov 2015 GOA_FV.pdf · THE PULSE GOAN OVERSEAS ASSOCIATION, TORONTO ... THE PULSE GOAN OVERSEAS ASSOCIATION, TORONTO

that served as a runway of sorts. Noteworthy was the “Gomesi” (or “busutti”) of Uganda. It was created by Goan tailor Gomes of Kampala, about seventy years back, and named after him. Uganda even had a postal stamp dedicated to him. Another standout was Fabian Correia as a Masai warrior in the proper regalia, including a freshly defleshed rib of a large animal, and not forgetting the traditional Masai dance of bouncing higher and higher. The goings-on were punctuated by other party games and a raffle with prizes sporting African themes.

Bingo became a memory test. People had to go back into the rewind mode. The numbers were first called out in Swahili ! People had to jog their memories to figure out what “kumi-na-moja’, “shirini-na-bili” or “arbaene-na-tanu” meant. Delphine Francis, an accomplished singer, fronted a trio with her husband, Errol, and brother-in-law Tom on his guitar. The Swahili/Konkanim songs they entertained the crowd with, were composed by Ishmael Francis, the family patriach, some seventy years back, in Uganda, and included “Toto na lia” and others. DJ Dennis D’Souza

and son Sheldon provided music that was relevant to the event. “Chakula” came in generous portions of “nyama ya kookoo”, “mogo” and “kasorri”. This was followed later by “biryani” and mutton curry, hulva from Malindi and “mandazi” prepared by Edith Dias. Fr.Hilario of the Pillar Seminary in Goa, said the grace. A while later he surprised everybody by

stepping on to the stage and belting out familiar “dulpods”.

Elma DaCosta was in evidence everywhere, as the designated videographer, capturing the subtle nuances of the day. As a seasoned emcee, Linda D’Sa was articulate and in her element. When all is said and done, Greta Dias, emerges as a paradigm of efficiency in organizational skills

and motivation. Teamwork and the army of skilled helpers she had, made for a seamless and enjoyable function. The revelers lived up to the African spirit of live for the day, eat, drink and be merry ! (Imagination may be required to decipher the Swahili words used above)

KONKAN NITE 2015 Marshall Fernandes, Director, Cultural Activities October 10, 2015 was a day many Goans and Mangaloreans will remember as Konkan Nite availed in Brampton. G.O.A. was proud to bring to the Konkan community mega stars from Goa, Mangalore and London (U.K.). It was a wonderful celebration of Konkani language that was staged with songs music and comedy. Of course, the evening began with a wonderful rendition of our National Anthem (English & Konkani) by Candida Camilo, followed by non-stop performances by Melody King of Goa; Lawry Tarvasso, Mangalorean Diva; Ester Noronha and the one and only Nightingale of Goa; Lorna Cordeiro. Their songs were complemented with superb comedy by John D’Silva and Socorro Silva that brought laughter to each and everyone in the audience. All I could hear in the theatre was laughter and applause. The

performance depicted on stage would not have happened without the music director, Norman Cardozo (also from Goa) backed up by the GOA AMIGOS After the event, I personally had many, many calls and emails simply praising the efforts of the G.O.A. members that were involved in organizing this event. Needless to say, the attendees had one the best times in witnessing such performances. I was asked by many “When is the next Konkan nite

happening?” In order for this event to succeed there were many individuals who put in a lot of time and effort, without whom this would not have been a success. Kudos and thanks to one and all. My gratitude towards these individuals cannot be put on paper as it would not serve justice – Simply put “kalzant than Deu Borem korum tumcam sogleank”. As mentioned by the president of G.O.A., Selwyn Collaco many a times; G.O.A. is not all about social events, it is a platform for all Goans to succeed in different walks of life. G.O.A. has many different programs that will benefit every individual (visit goatoronto.com). Nonetheless, as a director of culture, I will do my best to instill culture in every social event that we organize and would need support from one and all. Our heartful thanks to the many dedicated business sponsors who supported the event from beginning to end, our appreciation to ALL. To summarize, Konkan Nite 2015 was another feather on G.O.A.’s hat after VIVA GOA 2015. Watch out for many more events in the days to come. Deu Borem Korum Mog Assumdi Viva Goa – Viva Konkani
