“The falling leaves drift by my window, the autumn leaves of red & gold”…..sounds like a song. It won’t be long until autumn leaves start to fall. It’s so exciting when the season starts to change and the hot summer days turn to cooler mornings and evenings. We even get a little skip in our step. The plants and flowers all change to gold, bronze , and BURNT ORANGE!!!!! Sorry…I just had to say that!

Fall brings an exciting schedule of events to TSFA. If you are a fan of the State Fair Of Texas, plan to attend on Saturday, September 29 and support TSFA and designer Gregg Hoppe AIFD, TMFA as he presents “Kaleidoscope” focusing on “Texas Local Florists.com”. Texas Cup Winner - Nicola Parker, Dianna, and I will be attending The National Alliance Of Floral Associations Annual Conference in Hartford, Connecticut on October 6-8. Nicola will be participating in the National Designer Of The Year contest on October 6. The Finance Committee will meet in Cedar Park on October 25 and TSFA will hold Introductory Hands-On Floral Design Classes at Southern Floral in Austin on October 26 and 27.

I want to say “Thanks” again to all the great TSFA members who have agreed to be a part of our committees this year. Committee dates are all finalized for this fall and it’s going to be a action packed few months.

I hope that everyone has a successful and fruitful fall. I know we could all use some monetary inspiration. Let’s all remember to be thankful for what we have and just maybe the cooler weather will entice customers to buy more plants and flowers.

Florists Business Education

Supercharge Your Sales — Part IISpeaker: Tim HuckabeeSponsored by BloomNetWritten by Rebecca Espinosa TMFA

Live calls to a Texas shop was on the agenda for this dy-namic presentation by Tim Huckabee. He commented that one of the things florists don’t do well is service training. Are you making a connection with your caller or are you just taking an order? Just because you are polite, does not mean you are doing a good job of taking an order.

When taking an order, identify yourself. Find out if it is a first time caller or a repeat customer. If it is a first time customer, it is YOU that will sell the shop. Listen to what the caller is saying! The caller will steer you to the impo-rance of the occasion and the price they want to spend.

Offer add-ons — they make the sale more per-sonal and add to your bottom line. Ask for an email address to add to your records. Make a personal connection with the caller. Sixty-eight percent of customers who are unhappy with your service will not complain — they simply will not use you again.

Tim made sev-eral cold calls to local shops and gave pointers on the good and bad points of the call.

Stop & Smell the TweetsFlowers, Customers & Revenue…in Just 140 CharactersPresented by JJ Akin TMFWritten by Bruce Easley AAF TMFA

In the world of marketing, it seems like we are bombarded with messages about sales, products, and services. Most marketing campaigns are just blasted out to the public, and we hope they land upon someone that might do busi-ness with us, not making a personal connection with our customers. Have you looked into Twitter and taken the time with your floral shop to “Stop and Smell the Tweets”?

At TSFA conference this year JJ Akin TMF, a floral design ed-ucator in Irving ISD, vivaciously spoke about today’s youth, who are our future floral buyers that he sees daily, and how they want to connect personally to companies they do busi-ness with. Facebook has had many changes with privacy issues and allowances of what personal profile and business profile pages can do. At his school, just as in many corpo-rate business jobs, Facebook is blocked. If you are currently using a Facebook page as your only social media outlet, you might be missing a big segment of potential customers.

There is no better way to fill this void than with Twitter. JJ started with the basics of Twitter – 140 characters, replies, hashtags (#TSFA2012), and how we as florist can make tweets searchable and usable. From there he showed examples of tweet styles and how trending topics work. He cited Sprinkles Cupcakes (@sprinkles) with using Twitter in one of the best ways that creates foot traffic. He offered up great ideas for promotions for your floral shop like tweeting coupons, secret words, vase recycling, or sharing pictures of designs your shop has made. Lastly, he touched on Pinter-est and how it can be linked to Twitter as a picture is worth a thousand words that can be summed up and sent to your customers in 140 characters or less. Follow JJ and TSFA on Twitter. @jjakin @txflorist

Everything Old is New AgainBy Rich Salvaggio AIFDSponsored by TelefloraWritten by Bruce Easley AAF TMFA

How do you make a pretty bridal bouquet prettier? That was the question ask by Teleflora’s Rich Salvaggio on Sunday afternoon in the South Pacific Showroom. Most brides are happy with a beautiful traditional bouquet but adding modern or contemporary styling gives the bride a “Wow” factor. Enhancing an already beautiful bouquet can be so simple. A great example is adding long flowing ribbon of alternating sizes and shades around the underside of a nosegay to create a totally different look.

Top dressings are also popular in today’s bridal bouquets. Adding beau-tiful cymbidium orchids to the top of a compact bouquet can instantly change the dynamic and feel of an already beautiful bouquet. Medallions, rhinestone initials, and broaches are all new ways of making a simple and lovely bouquet exciting and new. You may want to even add jewels and rhinestones to long flowing ribbons. Rich showed the traditional duchess rose and suggested a shoulder purse made of Oasis wire collar shaped into a heart and added a beautiful jeweled long strap. He then placed two open duchess roses inside the heart shaped purse with clear water tubes creating a more “now” look. This would also be perfect for prom.

Rich showed the crowd how to create a stemmed handle out of a plastic handle bouquet holder. Use double sided carpet tape down one side and up the other of the plastic handle. Add several flower stems and then place a rubber band at the top and one at the bottom to secure them. You can then insert additional stems between the existing stems and rubber bands. Wrap the stems with a beautiful ribbon of the brides choice and you have the look of a fresh picked garden bouquet. He also showed the proper way to French Braid a bouquet handle.

Carnations always get a “bum rap” for being too ordinary but Rich showed us that clustering 32 carnation together can be beautiful when surrounded by Zanadu leaves and beaded wire across the bouquet to give it an elegant sparkle. The carnations could easily be mistaken for hydrangeas from a distance.

Orange and Green are still very popular colors and will continue to be on trend for a while. Add splashes of other colors such as blue Veronica and Scabiosa Pods to create interest.A finale bouquet of blue hydrangea and peach roses received a royal makeover with long strands of English ivy and alternating lengths of bullion wire holding clear tubes filled with blue hydrangea blooms.

We are now ready and prepared to go to wed-ding war with the same old flowers but with brand new ideas. It’s always great to learn a new idea to keep us ahead of our neighbors.

A Step Outside a Basket and a Bow”With Debbie Woltmann TMFA and Guest Designer Sandy Ramirez TMFASponsored by TSFA Growers DivisionWritten by Rey Rodriguez TMFA CFD Showcasing the gorgeous foliage and blooming plants provided by Klepac Greenhouses, Weatherford Farms and Vickery Whole-sale Greenhouse, Debbie Woltman TMFA, transformed the small convention stage into a beautiful showroom for their plush products. With the help of fellow Texas Master Florists, Debbie created a playful display of creatively decorated plants. Debbie eloquently informed the audience of how easy it is to decorate a basket with a bow and be done with it, but then its just an ordinary plant that you see in every shop around town; however when you work to transform that same plant by sim-ply adding some bling to a basket or adding some decorative aluminum wires, or better yet, adding a combination of those decorative accessories, you can increase the value of that same ordinary plant. For example, you can use small sprigs of a flower that was left over from a previous arrangement. Debbie explained that instead of tossing these out, you can easily insert the left over blooms into water picks, then insert the picks into the soil of the new plant and the end result is a gorgeous plush foli-age plant with vibrant colors from fresh cut flowers. Also, she showed how you can use a blooming plant inserted into a basket filled with foliage plants that can easily be decorated with river cane and minimal amounts of decorative wire and beads. The stage was adorned with beautiful birds nest fern, rubber trees, coleus, bromeliads, all set in unique and one of a kind containers. Some containers had been re-purposed. My favorite was an old plate box with robin blue colored paper and choco-late accents filled with chocolate wine, Hershey’s kisses, a small plant and a creatively decorated cylinder vase filled with fresh cut flowers. Not only did Debbie showcase creative uses for remnants that may have been laying around the design room, but she described how you could easily re-purpose an old bas-ket by painting it with Design Master paints, or how you could transform a normal run of the mill terrarium from blah to bling. Debbie traveled thru the seasons of life, with new beginnings, marriage and death. As she made her floral travels she paused for a moment at marriage, where she invited fellow Designer Sandy Ramirez TMFA to create a beautiful table scape of a cake crafted from fresh red roses and succulents, each tier stacked on top of each other, with white stephanotisis cascading onto the table. The table was accented with candles, hand crafted flower girl’s basket made from fresh vines, and then a gorgeous hand held bouquet crafted of red roses and miniature carnations all nuzzled into a gorgeous succulent which had been wrapped in a soft burlap ribbon. As Debbie concluded her program, she show-cased how everything can include plants, and that plants could

also be used as the focal for a gorgeous casket spray with orchids, and assorted foliages. It was a joy listening to Debbie speak of her passion for plants, and it encouraged me to come home and try to think more outside the box. I realized that yes, our customers will buy a plant but if I provide an upscale version of the same plant, then perhaps I can better increase my bottom line. Although I don’t sell lots of plants, just perhaps if I decorate them as Debbie showed us we can, with some of the small-est elements enhance our product and transform an ordinary plant into something more extraordinary. This I am sure, any of our customers would want to receive as a gift.

Wedding WORLD 2012Instructor: J Schwanke AIFDSponsored by Independent Floral Network

Excited florists ready to turn their world upside down greeted Instruc-tor J Schwanke AIFD at the first hands on workshop of convention. J taught the students to create a hand tied cascading bridal bouquet, shared secrets about concealed water supply “hand bouquets” and offered some fun along the way.

Deborah challenged the creativity of the full classroom during her TSFA Convention hands on workshop. She showed how a unique, structured bouquet could co-mingle with the past and the future becoming works of art that clients would always remember. Deborah encouraged attendees to think outside the box for inspiration.

Inspiration Takes FlightPresented by Jim Johnson AAF AIFD TMFASponsored by Design MasterWritten by Elaine Carrell TMFA

Have you ever taken an order over the phone in your flower shop? Upon hanging up the phone, you asked yourself “How am I going to do that?” Yeah, finally a time to challenge our creativity and make something fun. This recepient will totally appreciate a “suspended design”.

Voila — “Frame SpAcial Design” is born.

We began with window frame props on loan from the Garden Club in Bryan/College Station. You could also deliver a shepherds hook or orna-ment hanger stand with this design. Just a little upsell. Nothing wrong with adding a few extra dollars to your bottom line, is it?

If you have ever taken a class from Mr. John-son before, you know that good mechanics come first when creat-ing a unique design, so make sure yours are the best. We started with a floral cage and #22 wire inserted thru the cage to create a hanger. Remember this is a suspended design, so it needs to be able to hang and hold up to any possible windy conditions. We hung our designs in the window frames and began the design. Then we disguised our cage with ti leaves and galax leaves while creating depth. To add character to each design, we added midollino sticks to create a starburst effect and intensified our sphere looking structure. We added curly wil-low and bound the ends with bind wire shaping it into armatures (simi-lar to butterfly wings). Mr. Johnson showed us how to massage and relax fibers in stems of mini calla lilies. He also taught us how to braid com-modore leaves. Insertions of the mini callas thru the ti leaves came next as we created the look of flowers jumping thru space. Additional flowers like spray roses, hypericum, and lily grass were added by each designer as they created their own rendition of “Frame SpAcial Design”.

I must say this was a very FUN workshop (as all of Mr. J’s classes are). It totally excited my creativity to a great party work idea. Something dif-ferent than your everyday “spring bouquet”.

Tropical ReflectionsPresented by John Hosek AIFD CFD PFCI CAFA CFSponsored by TelefloraWritten by Nora Cisneros TMFAOn Sunday, July 22, 2012 at 8 am there was a sold out class of eager, yet red eyed, group of designers ready to learn a thing or two from Educa-tion Specialist John Hosek AIFD CFD PFCI CAFA CF. Many had seen his show the day before and were excited about what this class would bring. John started out his class by sharing a 16-page handout covering the elements of design, the principles of design, and the care and handling of tropicals.

John said “People are intimidated by tropicals because they have large in-sertions, and they are not the typical flower they are used to working with.” Everyone should become intrigued by the tropicals, they are interesting and customers tend to enjoy them because they are different.

John said everyone in your store, if they are on the sales floor, should invoke the use of correct terminology so that your shop sounds, as well as presents itself, as professional. Be able to tell a customer why they like that particular arrangement, why is it pretty? John said that “pretty should not be a design term.” Does the arrangement have harmony? Does the arrangement have good line? Does it have pleasing texture? What Color harmony are you looking for?

John instructed the class on two arrangements. The class’s first arrange-ment was a vase arrangement, with birch inside and out of the vase, building a structure to weave the flowers through. John gave the students zip ties to complete the structure. Then they wove the flowers through to complete the design. The second arrangement was a structure using halla leaves to encase the arrangement. John also instructed the students on weaving halla leaf rosettes. That was the focal of this design.

John finished off his class saying “Design is interpretive — Art is in the eye of the beholder. You are the Artist — Interpret Differently”.

The new member reception was held during the TSFA Con-vention. Attendees were welcomed by Judy Rutledge AAF TMFA. There was a very good turn out.

Everyone was invited — current and new members. To help with the mingling, bud vases with single flowers (orchids, proteas, and gerbers to name a few) were placed around the room. New members chose a card with the name of the flower, then they went to where the flower vase was that was on their card. Then they introduced themselves to ev-eryone around the vase.

The mix of members included new comers to the floral industry, agriculture floral design teachers and people who have been in the industry for a long time. A good time was had by all.

TSFA wecomed 123 new members this year!
