MALAWIMzuzu and Ekwendeni

The water supplies in Mzuzu and Ekwendeni

predominantly rely on the Lynyangwa River.

Due to rising urban water demand and climate

variation the reliability of these services are at

stress. Northern Region Water Board has iden-

tified the need to invest in additional production

and transport/distribution capacity and the need

to capacitate its organization and employees,

to promote business wise sound operations

leading to financial sustainable provision of

water services to its people.

Target water company:

Northern Region Water Board

Contract value: € 1.866.100

ADDITIONAL ASSIGNMENTS THROUGH:• Procurement support• Project management (PDCA cycle)• Project monitoring and evaluation (KPIs)

SUSTAINABILITYThe project recognizes the interlinkage between

investments and operational excellence. Without

timely and proper infrastructure investments financial

sustainable operations will never materialize. The

opposite is true as well: without operational excellence

there is never a sound and solid basis to become

creditworthy as water operator to attract commercial or

development loans or grants. The EIB Water Efficiency

Project in Mzuzu has clearly linked its investment

program of € 20 million to this capacity building project

to ensure that life cycle management of assets is key

to sustainable and affordable water services for all.

IDENTIFICATION OF EXTRA WATER PRODUCTION CAPACITY, THROUGH: • Assessment of proposed investment

program, update designs and prepare tender docs

• Design and supervise groundwater drilling program

• Prepare design and procurement of dam raising Lunyanswa

• Feasibility study and design of 2 new river intakes

DEVELOPMENT OF HUMAN AND ORGANI- SATIONAL CAPACITY, THROUGH: • Development of hydraulic model

and customer database in GIS• Development and implementation

of NRW reduction programs• Development and transfer of

an operational hydraulic model• Design SCADA and MIS systems to

support operational excellence
