When we traveled to Newfoundland in September 2011 on the tenth anniver-

sary of 9/11, we had no idea that our journey would take us across the United States, to our home city of Toronto, eventually landing on Broadway.

We spent a month in Gander, Newfound-land and the surrounding communities

meeting with the lo-cals, returning flight crews and pilots, and returning “come from aways” (a New-foundland term for a visitor from be-yond the island) who

gathered to celebrate the hope that emerged from tragedy.

We didn’t know what we were looking for, but thankfully the people of Newfoundland are incredible storytellers. As we heard nu-merous tales of ordinary people and extraor-dinary generosity, it became clear that dur-ing the week of 9/11, for the 7,000 stranded passengers and people of Newfoundland, the

island was a safe harbor in a world thrown into chaos.

We laughed, we cried, we were invited over for dinner and offered cars. We made lifetime friends out of strangers and we came home wanting to share every story we heard.

When you see Come From Away, you will hear the remarkable story of the little town that welcomed the world. You’ll also meet the extraordinary actors and band who tell the stories of 16,000 “Come From Aways” and Newfoundlanders each night on tour, and on Broadway at the Gerald Schoen-feld Theatre.

Through this journey, we’ve learned it’s important to tell stories about welcoming strangers and stories of kindness. It’s impor-tant to honor what was lost and commemo-rate what was found.

Come From Away is at the Fisher Theatre Oct 1–13. For tickets, please see our ad on page 2.

F ifty-six years ago, Michael Stewart’s and Jerry Herman’s Hello, Dolly! had its world premiere at the Fisher Theatre on

November 18, 1963. Now, the Tony Award winning Best Musical Revival will return to the Fisher November 19–December 1 star-ring Carolee Carmello in the iconic role of Dolly Gallagher Levi.

Ms. Carmello takes over the role from Tony Award winner Betty Buckley, join-ing the astonishing list of show business luminaries who have played Dolly, includ-ing Carol Channing, Pearl Bailey, Phyllis Diller, Betty Grable, Martha Raye, Ginger Rogers, Ethel Merman (in her last appear-ance on Broadway), Mary Martin, and most recently in this celebrated new production, Bette Midler, Donna Murphy, and Berna-dette Peters.

After breaking box office records week after week and receiving unanimous raves on Broadway, this Hello, Dolly! is now tour-ing America, paying tribute to the original work of legendary director/choreographer Gower Champion—hailed both then and now as one of the greatest stagings in musi-cal theater history. Rolling Stone calls it “a must-see event. A musical comedy dream. If you’re lucky enough to score a ticket,

you’ll be seeing something his-toric. Wow, wow, wow, indeed!”

Carolee Carm-ello has appeared in 14 Broadway musicals and is a three-time Tony Award nominee for her performances in Parade, Lestat, and Scandalous. She also appeared on Broadway in Finding Neverland (Drama Desk Award nomination), Sister Act, The Addams Family (Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Award nominations), and Mamma Mia!, and she received an Obie Award in Hello Again. Her television credits include “The Deuce,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “The Good Fight,” “Madam Sec-retary,” “Smash,” “Law and Order: SVU,”

“Frasier,” “Ed,” and “Remember W.E.N.N.” (SAG Award nomination). She was nominat-ed for an Indie Series Award for Best Sup-porting Actress in the award-winning web-series “Indoor Boys” and has also appeared in concert at Lincoln Center, Town Hall, and Carnegie Hall.

Hello, Dolly! is at the Fisher Theatre Nov. 19–Dec 1. For tickets, please see our ad on page 10.

Broadway In Detroit, Detroit Public The-atre, and Music Hall are set to bring the 2017 Tony Award-winning Best Play Re-

vival of August Wilson’s Jitney to Detroit November 12–16.

Detroit will be one of a handful of cit-ies to welcome this production directed by Wayne State University graduate Ruben San-

tiago-Hudson, who also directed the 2017 Broadway show. In addition to Santiago-Hudson, the tour will feature Keith Ran-dolph Smith as Doub, Harvy Blanks as Shealy, Ray Anthony Thomas as Turnbo and Anthony Chisholm as Fielding—all return-ing to their roles from Broadway. They will be joined on the road by Francois Battiste as Booster, Amari Che-

atom as Youngblood, and Brian D. Coats as Philmore with additional casting to be announced.

Jitney takes place in the 1970’s in Pitts-burgh’s Hill District. Regular taxi cabs won’t go to the Hill, so unofficial, unlicensed taxi cabs (jitneys) operate instead. When the city

threatens to board up the business and the boss’ son returns from prison, tempers flare, potent secrets are revealed and the fragile threads binding these people together may come undone at last. The New York Times called the Broadway revival “A joyfully intoxicating celebration,” The Hollywood Reporter proclaimed it “an eloquent por-trayal of black struggle reaffirming Wilson’s place among the towering greats of Ameri-can drama.”

August Wilson is a legendary American playwright whose works include Ma Rain-ey’s Black Bottom, Fences, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, and The Piano Lesson. Af-ter his passing in 2005, the Virginia Theatre on Broadway was renamed the August Wil-son Theatre in his honor.

“It’s not often that we have an opportunity to bring a Tony Awarding winning produc-tion, with a majority of its Broadway cast, directed by the incredible Reuben Santiago-Hudson, to Detroit,” stated Broadway In De-troit Executive Director Alan Lichtenstein.

“Having this play at Music Hall this season is going to be a wonderful experience for our audiences and for the city. You don’t want to miss it.”

August Wilson’s Jitney is at the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts Nov 12–16. For tickets,

please see our ad on page 16.

1918

Ever since that first performance in May of 1981, CATS has been enthralling audi-

ences around the world and has become one of the most successful shows ever written. Did you know…

• CATS was inspired by Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot, a series of poems about cats published in 1939. The reason Eliot chose this title is because “Pos-sum” was his alias amongst his friends.

• 2019 marks the 80th anniversary of Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats being published.

• CATS had its world premiere at the New London Theatre on May 11, 1981, and its Broadway premier at the Winter Garden Theatre in 1982, and it later went on to win seven 1983 Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score.

• CATS ran for 18 years on Broadway—one of the longest running shows in Broad-way history!

• A screen adaptation of CATS, helmed by Oscar winner Tom Hooper, is due for theat-rical release on December 20, 2019.

• CATS continues to pop up in your favorite TV and movies such as School Of Rock,

“Sex and The City,” “Modern Family,” “Family Guy” and “The Simpsons.”

• Over 150 artists ranging from Barry Ma-nilow to Joni Mitchell have recorded the show’s hit song, “Memory.”

• Betty Buckley won the 1983 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her role as Grizabella in the original Broad-way production of CATS.

WHO’S WHOTHOMAS STEARNS ELIOT (Poet & Lyri-cist) was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on Sep-tember 26, 1888. He was educated at Harvard, the Sorbonne in Paris and Merton College, Ox-ford.
