Whether you watched the Super Bowl LIV for the game, the commercials, the halftime show, or the camaraderie of friends, we all saw the Kansas City Chiefs defeat the San Francisco 49ers to become the 2020 Super Bowl Champions. The championship game, regardless of the sport, pits the two best teams against each other to decide who, on that given day, is the “best team”. I would argue though that the two teams that reach this pinnacle are not always the most talented. Usually the teams that have decided it’s more about team and less about the individual are able to navigate the monotony of the regular season and the tension of a playoff run to reach that final game. More importantly, she discussed the importance of teamwork as it relates to success of a company or organization.

Teamwork offers others to gain an appreciation and understanding of the bigger picture; hence, providing individuals the opportunity to grow while the team succeeds.

Teamwork allows individuals to maximize their strengths and minimize their weaknesses. Collectively a group of dedicated employees working as a team can outperform an individual.

Teamwork allows a group to share ideas, promotes creativity and provides an opportunity for multiple reviews which inherently decreases the chances of errors or omissions.

So how do you build a team? It starts with a leader, but that doesn’t imply that the leader is necessarily in charge. A leader of a team builds rapport between team members, encourages information sharing, establishes goals and action plans, and most importantly is the ultimate team player. Talent alone can produce great individual results, but teamwork can create amazing company or organizational results.

A perfect example of teamwork was exhibited when John Nagle, P.E. and Thomas McNavage Jr., P.E. presented Coplay-Northampton Bridge Rehabilitation at our January luncheon. As we all know any project, especially projects of this magnitude, are only successful when all players develop into a team that works toward the common goal.

Thanks,Brad Heigel

As most of you know, ASHE is an organization that is run by folks who volunteer their time. However, the reward for volunteering is tremendous.

When you volunteer your time you:• Become a transportation industry advocate

• Participate in committees that are on the leading edge of industry initiatives and technology

• Develop a better understanding of the engineering business

• Create life-long relationships and friends

For these reasons, we ask all members to consider volunteering to participate in an ASHE committee. You do not have to be an Officer or on the Board of Directors to make a difference. If you are interested in helping out, our committees are listed to the left along with a contact. Please feel free to reach out to any committee that sounds interesting, or contact Brad Heigel, ASHE President, and he will help hook you up with a committee in need of volunteer support.

Thank you for considering getting involved!

ASHE Charity of the month

For over 90 years, the United Methodist Home for Children has provided a caring environment for Central Pennsylvania’s children in need. Originally a home for orphans, today the home is a refuge for children who are the victims of a negative social environment. Each year, UMHC programs provide emergency shelter and residential treatment for hundreds of children on their beautiful 56 acre campus in Shiremanstown PA.

Chris A. Drda, P.E. is the Assistant District Executive for Design in PennDOT District 8. He is responsible for the delivery of over 100 projects annually with an annual letting of between $150 to $250 million. A graduate of Pennsylvania State University, Chris has worked for the Connecticut Department of Transportation, with the majority of his career working at PennDOT. Chris has worked at both PennDOT Districts 1 & 8, the Bureau of Construction and Materials and the Bureau of Design. During his career, he has had the opportunity to represent PennDOT nationally at AASHTO and the Mid- Atlantic Region Quality Assurance Workshops. He has also presented on numerous topics at transportation sessions including APC/PennDOT Fall Seminar, Innovation Day, and Transportation and Safety Conference. During his time as Chief, Consultant Agreement Section at PennDOT, he worked closely with all Engineering Districts, FHWA, ACEC, APC and other transportation partners in policy development and industry-wide issue resolution. Chris previously served on the ASHE board, and would like to again provide his experience and knowledge in continuing the great accomplishments ASHE has contributed to the Transportation Industry.

Pat Kelly is a Vice President and the Harrisburg Office Manager for Johnson, Mirmiran and Thompson (JMT) and is the Director of Construction Inspection Services for Central Pennsylvania. I enjoy meeting and learning from many of you at our meetings and around our tables. The activities we participate in, the services we provide, and the donations that we give both excite and encourage me to give back. In the past, I have been involved with leadership and volunteering in various organizations. I would be honored to receive your vote to represent you on the Board of Directors to recruit and develop the next generation of engineers.”

Matthew D. Snyder, P.E. is a Project Engineer at Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson in Harrisburg, PA with over 12 years of experience as a transportation structural engineer. He previously served on the ESP Board of Directors from 2012 to 2014. He would like to volunteer for the ASHE Harrisburg Board of Directors to help promote the local transportation industry and encourage younger member participation.

Here are the nominees for the 3 -Year Director (2020 -2021) positions. We had great interest in participating on the Board this year and an abundance of qualified candidates.

Unfortunately, we have only 5 spots to fill and therefore we will hold an election for the new 3-year Directors. The membership will receive an email in the next few weeks for the ASHE 3 -Year Director Elections. The

election will only include the candidates name (please refer to the bio in the Profile for additional information on the candidates) and the 5 candidates receiving the most votes will be selected.

Moving Forward Together®

ASHE participated in the 2020 Engineers Week activities at the Whitaker Center in Harrisburg on February 15 and 16. Volunteers assisted children in the construction of truss bridges using toothpicks, straws, uncooked spaghetti and marshmallows. It was encouraging to see so many kids interested in science. Thanks to Tyler Kersetter, Mike Newman, Steve Roman, Brian Watson, Curt Sanno, Tim Bolden, Ken Jones, Keith Markel and especially Kevin Scheurich, who helped put the whole thing together.
