Project description
BACKGROUND
Pöyry is a global expert in consulting and engineering. Pöyry deal with a number of different services as for instance renewable energy, pulp and paper industry, environment and construction services.
The project is about to design a GUI (graphical User interface) for operator control workers in order to monitor important param-eters at the same time during the process of creating pulp.
AIM/ TARGET
To develop concepts for displaying some parameters at the same time during time on a screen
>> To explore different models of screen-based interaction,
>> To explore a range of data visualization methods
>> To gain understanding of interaction technologies
>> To use group brainstorming as a means of generating ideas and finding solutions
>> To use task analysis, interviews and other studies as a basis for defining problems and exploring solutions

Research
Study visit at the paper mill factory including the control room.
>> Learned how they controlled the process from the control room
>> Monitor and adjust the parameters to keep the flow of the production
>> Mostly male workers, many of those were in the middle age
>> 12 hour work shift

Research
Study visit at the paper mill factory including the control room.
>> Keyboard produced by ABB (old version), shortcut keys (appreciated)
>> Approximately 2-3 years to learn and to feel comfortable with the system
>> The new version was based on a Windows platform, many windows to handle, disagreement among the users
>> The factory had “own” color codes for different parameters
>> Projected parameters over time with line graphs
>> There were no history about previous alarms
>> The control room was semi-dark, white walls, dark background on the interface to avoid the workers to overstretch their eyes

USABILITY ISO 9241-11, standard for usability
ISO 9241-11 “Extent to which a product can be used by specified users to achieve specified goals with effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction in a specified context of use.” (Article by Santto Tajakka, Data educator and usability expert, 2004).
Donald Norman”... User-Centered design emphasizes that the purpose of the system is to serve the user, not to use a specific technology, not to be an elegant piece of programming. The needs of the users should dominate the design of the interface, and the needs of the interface should dominate the design of the rest of the system.” (Donald Norman,”Cognitive Engineering”, in D. A. Norman & S. W. Draper ((eds.)), User Centered System Design, 1986).

LAWS AND REGULATIONS Swedish Work Environment Authority (Arbetarskyddsstyrelsen, AFS), regulations on work with display
Display Task design and organization7 § Work with display screen, which is strongly driven or tied in physically or mental respect or are repetitive may not normally occur.
Display Task design and organizationPeople who continuously work at monitors suffer from burning eyes, sensitivity to light and headache related to work.

IMPORTANT CRITERIA TO DECIDE
>> Easily understandable (remember Donald Norman’s quotation earlier).
>> Creativeness
>> Interesting

Refinement
I developed some concepts by asking a former student of feedback and advice. This is an example of a process of one of my concepts, namely concept num-ber 2.
Decision makingRefinement Evaluation

Evaluation
EVALUATION WITH USERS I decided to test my ideas mostly with people who had no experience of design.
>> I put my final concepts on my online portfolio http://www.erikrydell.com.
>> Watch the concepts.
