The projected cost of healthcare in retirement is well documented. Numerous studies suggest the average 65-year old couple will spend around $250,000 on healthcare costs (not including any potential long-term care costs) during retirement years.

Although healthcare cost projections may vary, one thing that everyone knows is that the costs of health care coverage will be a significant piece of every person’s financial plan, with no piece contributing more to a person’s well-being. In fact, it seems that these days the majority of a retiree’s time could be spent navigating through the complicated world of healthcare options for not only themselves, but also ailing parents.

In an effort to help with this, we will host local expert, Virginia Van Haren, Account Executive for M3 Insurance to present

what you should look for in Medicare Supplement Insurance, and how to decipher the differences between plans. Virginia specializes in individual coverage, and her

primary role is to help individuals obtain the health and life insurance products that meet their needs. She advises them about the design, implementation and management of their personal insurance programs.

We hope you’ll join us for this worthwhile seminar to answer your questions on health insurance and gain the peace of mind that comes from knowing you and your loved

ones will have your medical needs met.

President’s Message:Fellow Prime Time Plus Members:Your bank has had an exciting second quarter of this year. In May, we closed on

our merger with Union Bank & Trust (UB&T).

As a combined entity, we have approximately $1.3 billion in assets and now have a total of fifteen locations including Evansville,

Belleville, New Glarus, Brooklyn and

Janesville.

This merger will also provide us a tremen-dous opportunity to expand our member-ship in our great Prime Time Plus group.Adding to the excitement, we recently opened our brand-new Middleton office. This is a “branch of the future” with many electronic avenues for our customers to interact with us. The new building, (located next to our old building site), is beautiful and I encourage you to stop in and see it.In addition, we have finalized the renovation of our Cross Plains office, as well as the lower level of the Black Earth office. Both offices were damaged in last year’s flood. All these projects reflect the pride and dedication we have in how our buildings represent us in the communities we serve.

As this newsletter highlights, we have many opportunities for you to capitalize on with your involvement in Prime Time Plus. I hope you can take advantage of them.

I really enjoyed seeing so many of you at our Prime Time Appreciation Concerts on August 6th and want to personally thank you for your contributions and relationships with State Bank of Cross Plains

None of us like to think about death. Whether our own or that of a loved one, planning a funeral is often the last thing any of us want to talk about. As difficult as that conversation may be now, when dealing with the emotions and stress surrounding loss, making decisions about funeral planning becomes infinitely harder.

A common phrase we hear from many people today is, “I don’t want a funeral when I die” or “I don’t want any services”. Those of us that counsel the bereaved, however, have often times seen the healing role of the funeral in the grieving process. An effective and meaningful funeral or memorial service helps not only the immediate family of the deceased, but their friends, colleagues, and community members as well. This time to come together and remember their loved one provides crucial social support in the aftermath of a loss and is the beginning of the healing process.

Few people realize just how many decisions must be made in the days following a death. The planning process often involves as many decisions as a wedding yet must be accomplished in just a few days, all while under significant emotional stress. Taking the time to plan your own funeral makes this process much easier on your loved ones and

gives you the peace of mind that everything will be taken care of. Speaking with a funeral director ahead of time also allows you to be in control of your final wishes and decide how you want your life celebrated.

One of the most important questions to consider when planning a funeral is what kind of service would you like? Although

the most common place to start is whether you prefer burial or cremation, this doesn’t necessarily mean you have to have a certain type of service. Many families choose to have a more traditional style funeral with their loved one present in a casket in order to give friends and family the opportunity to say goodbye. Some choose to have a memorial service using photographs and memorabilia as the focal point, rather than a casket. Others may choose to have a gathering where friends and family can share stories and memories in a more informal or “party” type setting.

Whether you would like to have your service at a church, funeral home, or other special location, having these details in place will help your loved ones navigate the funeral process more easily in their time of grief.

Join Ric Vanderhoef, a Certified Pre-Planning Specialist with Gunderson Funeral and Cremation Care, on Wednesday, November 6th, 2019 at State Bank of Cross Plains to learn more about planning your own unique celebration and how to make sure the future is taken care of for your loved ones.

sea weed gathering. Even people who don’t consider themselves art lovers will be intrigued by these paintings that make you feel like you are part of them.

The building itself is as unique as the collections housed within. Don’t forget to check out the rooftop sculpture garden where you will find a dozen, large, bronze sculptures of men toiling in the field and foundry and more that perch on the roof line of the Grohmann Museum. Everyone leaves with a souvenir booklet.

After a lunch stop in Champaign, IL we departed for the well-known Brown Hotel in Louisville, KY. The hotel opened in 1923, only 10 months after construction began, at the cost of four million dollars.

Upon arrival, we were greeted with a welcome reception featuring Buffalo Trace, Maker’s Mark and Chocolate Bourbon and a delicious dinner of the famous “Hot Brown”. In the 1920’s, The Brown Hotel drew over 1,200 guests each evening for its dinner dance. By the wee hours of the morning, guests would grow weary of dancing and make their way to the restaurant for a bite to eat. Sensing their desire for something more glamorous than traditional ham and eggs, Chef Fred Schmidt set out to create something new to tempt his guests’ palates. His unique dish? An open-faced turkey sandwich with bacon and a delicate Mornay sauce. The Hot Brown was born!

The second day both buses departed for Churchill Downs, where we had an excellent private walking tour to see the horses, morning workouts. We watched a film that encircled us, “The Greatest Race” in the Great Hall and felt like we were at the derby. Following the film, we all made derby hats to be used later in the day. After learning how to bet on the horses, we were able to put our new skills to the test with mock races and enjoyed a self-guided tour of the museum.

Next we experienced a behind the scenes tour of Kentucky’s only American Brandy and Absinthe distillery, Copper & Kings American Brandy, and enjoyed the best views of Louisville’s skyline from their Skydeck.

Our next visit was to the Muhammad Ali Center. Muhammad Ali was an

American professional boxer, activist, and philanthropist. He is nicknamed “The Greatest” and is widely regarded as one of the most significant and celebrated sports figures of the 20th century and as one of the greatest boxers of all time. We also learned that Muhammad Ali spent his entire life fighting outside of the ring as well, as a humanitarian. The guide told us that like Muhammad Ali, we are all fighting for something - our career, political change, the environment, a child’s future. He then challenged us to think about what we’re fighting for and to go make a difference.

After freshening up, we were off to the Derby Dinner Playhouse in Clarksville, IN where we enjoyed a delicious dinner and

Scam artists will use any leverage they can get to separate you from your money. Sadly, that includes exploiting grandparents’ love and concern for their grandchildren, giving rise to a breed of impostor fraud specifically targeting older Americans.

Grandparent scams typically work something like this: The victim gets a call from someone posing as his or her grandchild. This person explains, in a frantic-sounding voice, that he or she is in trouble: There’s been an accident, or an arrest, or a robbery. To up the drama and urgency, the caller might claim to be stuck in a foreign country; to make the impersonation more convincing, he or she will throw in a few family particulars, gleaned from the actual grandchild’s social media activity.

The impostor offers just enough detail about where and how the emergency happened to make it seem plausible and perhaps turns the phone over to another scammer who pretends to be a doctor, police officer or lawyer and backs up the story. The “grandchild” implores the target to wire money immediately, adding an anxious plea: “Don’t tell Mom and Dad!”

Fraudsters have also been known to ply this trick by email, text message and social media. It can be very lucrative — one former practitioner told CBS News that he could make as much as $10,000 on a good day. And it appears to be on the rise: The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reports that family and friend impostor scams cost consumers $41 million in the 12 months ending Oct. 31,

2018, up from to $26 million the previous year. The median loss is $2,000, according to the FTC, more than four times the amount for all fraud types.

Warning Signs• The person claiming to be your grandchild

asks you to send money immediately and provides details on how — for example, via prepaid cards or to a particular Western Union office.

• The call comes late at night. Scammers figure an older person may get confused more easily if they call then, the National Consumers League warns.

Do’s• Do set the privacy settings on your social

media accounts so that only people you know can access your posts and photos. Scammers search Facebook, Instagram and other social networks for family information they can use to fool you.

• Do ask questions someone else is unlikely to be able to answer, such as the name and species of your grandchild’s first pet.

• Do say you’ll call right back, then call your grandchild’s usual phone number. With luck, he or she will answer, and you’ll know that the supposed emergency call is a scam.

• Do contact other family members or friends and see whether they can verify the story. Scammers plead with you to keep the emergency a secret precisely, so you won’t try to confirm it.

• If you speak to someone who claims to be a police officer, do call the relevant law enforcement agency to verify the person’s identity and any information they’ve given you.

• Do trust your instincts. As the American Bar Association advises, if something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.

Don’ts• Don’t drop your guard because the number

on your caller ID looks familiar. Scammers can use technological tricks to make it appear that they’re calling from a trusted number, even including a family members name with the number, the Federal Communications Commission warns.

• Don’t volunteer information — scammers fish for facts they can use to make the impersonation believable. For example, if the caller says, “It’s me, grandpa!” don’t say your grandchild’s name. Wait for the caller to say it.

• Don’t let a caller rush you into making a decision.

• Don’t send cash, wire money, or provide numbers from gift or cash-reload cards to a person claiming to be a grandchild. Scammers prefer those payment methods because they’re difficult to trace.

• Don’t panic, no matter how dire the grandchild’s predicament sounds. Scam artists want to get you upset to distract you from spotting their scheme.

Beware of the Grandparent Scam

2019 Mystery Tour - Where did we go? Continued“The Savannah Sipping Society”, a laugh-a-minute comedy about four southern women, all needing to escape their day-to-day routines, drawn together by fate and an impromptu happy hour.

During our last day in Louisville, we enjoyed a city tour and learned about its history, beautiful buildings, landscapes and why it is considered the Bourbon capital of the world. Our next stop was at the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory, where we learned how baseball bats are made. After the tour, we took a ride on the French Lick Scenic Railway through the beautiful Hoosier National Forest and Burton Tunnel. On the way to our next hotel, we tried something “wild” and partook in the “Giraffe and

Elephant Experience” where we visited an elephant and two giraffes, learned about them, fed and had our pictures taken with them at a place called Wilstem, in Paoli, IN

After a short stop at our hotel, the famous French Lick Springs Resort in French Lick, IN we departed for Abbeydell Hall for a private dinner and show. “I’ve Got the Music In Me! a 1960’s & 70’s Musical Production”, a Branson, MO styled show featuring music of the 1960’s. This new hit musical production took us back to the days of the Bee Gees, the British Invasion and Motown. Our group enjoyed the high energy of this outta site journey of music, dance and the rockin’ harmonies of the day! Both the resort and

Abbeydell Hall were property formerly owned by Basketball Great Larry Bird.

It was hard to believe we were already headed for home. With a lunch stop at the Cracker Barrell and a visit to the Beer Nuts Company Store in Bloomington, IL, the only city in the world where Beer Nuts are made! Our company tour included a brief video presentation on the making of Beer Nuts, nuts to sample, and of course purchase. Before we knew it we were back home already with some great memories of our summer getaway!

Whether they are reconnecting with old friends they haven’t seen in many years, or making new ones, this is a popular a highlight of our club membership. In our travel, we strive to offer unique, all-inclusive experiences. This year we enjoyed a warm get away in Jamaica, Louisville Kentucky and the French Lick on our Mystery tour, Montana and Glacier National Park. We will depart on our Romantic Rhine River Cruise in September and Christmas in Omaha in December.

Many of you have told me that we need to see Mt. Rushmore, well 2020 is the year! We’ve also had a lot of interest in cruising the Canadian coast and New England, how about September 2020? Make sure you tell us where you want to go and make sure you check out the information on our upcoming slide shows. If you are still interested in our last day trips please give me a call. Often people have to cancel at the last minute and would be thrilled to have someone go in their place. Our goal is to have you look at us as your bank, we hope you’ll use us as a resource for knowledge, entertainment and services. Thanks for being part of our club.
