(This is an article which first appeared in the October 2016, edition of The Primary Planet)
Anne Devlin is best remembered as the loyal, trustworthy supporter of Robert Emmet who was the ____________ (1) of an Irish rebellion in 1803. She was __________ (2) into a farming background near Aughrim, Co. Wicklow in 1781. Although her family were not directly involved in the 1798 rebellion they were supporters of the United Irishmen who organised it. Because of this their ____________ (3) was burned by the British forces and her father was imprisoned. When Anne’s father was ___________ (4) the family moved to Rathfarnham in Co. Dublin. In 1803 Anne took up employment as housekeeper to Robert Emmet who __________ (5) nearby. Emmet was planning another rebellion and Anne became one of his most trusted friends. She delivered ____________ (6) for him all over the city and in this way, she got to know all the key people involved in the rising. The rebellion was a total failure and Emmet went into___________ (7). Anne was arrested and imprisoned in Kilmainham Jail. Despite being offered large bribes and suffering horrendous torture Anne refused to give any information about____________ (8), his colleagues or his whereabouts. Many members of her family were also arrested including her nine-year old brother who died in a ____________ (9) cell, from sheer neglect. But still Anne would not cooperate. Nobel Peace Prize 2016
The president of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in
2016 for his efforts to end a 52-year conflict in the country. In august, Mr. Santos sined an
agreement with FARC, who have been waging a civil war, to bring hostilities to a close
However, in early october the agreement was rejected in a reforendum by the Colombian
people.
In announcing the award, Kaci Kullmann Five, the chairwoman of the Norwegian Nobel Commitee (NNC), praised Mr. Santos for starting the piece process. ‘The award should also be seen as a tribut to the Colombian people who, despite great hardships and abuses, have not given up hope of a just peace, and to all the parties who have contributed to the peace prosess,’ she said
President Santos was born into a wealthy family in the capital bogotá and traned as an
economist in the US He was Minister for Defence before becoming presadent and has spent
the last four years trying to bring the war to an end. He has said, ‘Making peace is much
more difficult than making war because you need to change sentimints of people, people
who have suffered, to try to persuade them to forgive’
The NNC made its 2016 selection from a record number of canditates, 376 in all They hope that the awarding of the prize to President Santos will act as a spur for a future agreement and peace in Colombia. the prize amount was 18 million Swedish kronor, or about €850,000. The prize-giving ceremony took place in oslo on December 10, the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel in 1896.
