North Island Snowdrifters (www.nisnowdrifter.com) Newsletter - June 2010 2

Do you tan year-round to “improve

your looks”?? It was once a common

belief (and a deadly misconception) that smoking made

one look “good”, too. But just as cigarettes turned out to

be seriously bad for you, new research shows that tanning

also poses a major health risk. And it is getting more ex-

pensive—the recent healthcare reform legislation will be

funded, in part, by a 10% tax on tanning services, just as

excise taxes on cigarettes have long been used to cover

healthcare costs. This tanning tax is expected to generate

$2.7 billion over the next decade and will be used to help

fund the healthcare legislation recently passed by the gov-

ernment and signed by the President.

A report published in Lancet Oncology this year

found that the risk of melanoma, a potentially deadly

type of skin cancer, increases 75% when the use of tan-

ning devices starts before the age of 30. It also found

“consistent evidence” of a link to melanoma of the eye

and declared tanning beds to be “carcinogenic to hu-

mans”. In response, an FDA advisory panel recommends

that teens be allowed to tan only if their parents sign off.

The American Academy of Dermatology has sounded

the alarm about tanning beds for years, but the message

doesn’t seem to be getting across. More than a million

Americans (70% of them girls and women) visit a tanning

salon each day. Not surprisingly, tanning salons thrive in

Southern California. The effect of both inside and outside

tanning just increased the risk of cancer. Meanwhile,

more than a million new cases of skin cancer are diag-

nosed in the U.S. each year.

A major culprit is the ultraviolet light that skin ab-

sorbs from tanning beds and sun lamps (also from the sun

itself). One type of ultraviolet light, UVB, has been con-

sidered especially dangerous, so tanning beds mostly em-

ployed the other type of ultraviolet light, UVA. However,

in recent years, UVA has been discovered to be quite

harmful, as well. It penetrates deeper into the skin and

has been shown to trigger melanoma.

And, while tanning may temporarily impart a

“healthy glow”, most people now know that in the long

run it contributes to wrinkles and saggy skin. If you still

feel like you need a tan, consider a sunless tanning prod-

uct. Deemed safe by the FDA, these creams, gels, sprays

and lotions use an ingredient called dihydroxyacetone to

temporarily darken the outer layer of skin. As your outer

skin cells slough off over several days and weeks, the tan

will fade. On the other hand, real tans fade, too. But, the

damage they can cause is permanent.

Thank an NIS Board

Most of us have put our skis away and

are now focused on summer and all the ac-

tivities associated with it. Mammoth is still open and may be

until July. Rick Webb, who has a condo there, is still skiing

and enjoying every moment. Jamie Ramey & Jim Dickinson

went up a few weeks ago to catch a last minute ski weekend

because the snow was so good, can you imagine that! We had

excellent snowfall in Mammoth and the snow melt will cer-

tainly help alleviate the water shortage we’re having.

I’ve gone through the trip participation data and would like

to share with you some interesting information.

Total and percent of Membership that went on a club spon-

sored ski trip = 147 and 35%.

Total participants on Mammoth trips = 121; of which 112

were Club members; 26 members went to Vail.

Hat’s off to the following staunch Mammoth skiers:

Members who went on all 4 Mammoth trips: Rick

Bonnett; Cheryl Riess, Neal King, Hilda King, &

Mark Leewaye .

Members who went on 3 of the 4 Club sponsored

Mammoth trips: Dave Arnold, Andre Chappaz, Bar-

bara Daniels, William Jehl, Larry Klassen, Pat Klas-

sen, Jeff. Meyerson, Leslie Pearsiso, Mike Sanford,

Eileen Sanford & Ken Zuorro.

I am in the final phase of planning our ski trips for 2011.

Check the North Island Snowdrifters 2011 Ski Trip Calendar

(Page 9 of this Newsletter) which identifies the trips we have

planned and when we’ll be going. You’ll see that we have 6

trips: four (4) to Mammoth; one (1) to Park City and one (1) to

Whistler. We’re going to Whistler to take advantage of the

Winter Olympic infrastructure and membership demand and

to Park City because of its proximity and great snow. Mam-

moth, our bread n’ butter ski trips, provide our members an

opportunity to ski at a great mountain, at a reasonable price for

3 or 4 days, and on a long weekend so people who work can

participate. Check out the calendar and select the trips you

want to go on and be ready to sign up early to reserve a spot.

For Mammoth, our membership participation this past year

shows a saw tooth variation. For the year, we had an average

of 42 members go on these trips; 45 counting Temporary Mem-

bers. Typically, our last trip of the year relies heavily on Temp

Members; if it weren’t for these people, we would have had to

cancel these trips.

... it’s the MEMBERS who make

North Island Snowdrifters the

great club that it is!!!!

TRAVEL UPDATE Bill Altonen

Last year the Trip Leaders circulated Trip Evaluation

Questionnaires to get feedback about trip satisfaction. Here’s

what we were told by the participants:

Generally, those who go on our Mammoth trips are very

satisfied. We rated very high in Value, Length, Timing and

Bus Transportation and well above average in Lodging,

Food/Drinks and Parties. I am looking at ways to improve

these areas right now.

Once again I would like to thank the following Trip Lead-

ers who made our ski season a success in 2010:

Mammoth “Season Opener”: Gates Ingram with Jean

McCasey as his Co-Trip Leader.

Mammoth “Glitter Trip”: Catie Somers with Stephanie

Young & Bill Altonen as her Co-Trip Leaders.

Mammoth “007” Trip: Nick Cowell & Mike Hyduk.

Mammoth “Trailer Trash”: Alan Godwin & Aaron

Kamerling.

Vail: Kathy Hamlin.

As we approach 2011, I am looking for Mammoth Trip

Leaders for the April trip and Co-Trip Leaders for the Janu-

ary, February and April Trips. Please contact me if you

have an interest.

Feel free to e-mail me at: ([email protected]) or call

(858 232-9887) if you have any suggestions, questions or com-

ments. Your input is welcomed and needed to continue to

help make our Club the best Ski Club in San Diego.

Once again 007 (Mike Hyduk)

has made his mark in Snowdrifter

history. He recruited an accom-

plice, friend and co-conspirator,

008(Nick Cowell) for their most

recent caper into the high country.

The trip started out at Governor Drive with all

Bond Women and Men dressed up as their favorite

characters. Tuxedos and fancy dresses abounded up

and down the bus aisle. Moneypeney(Candy Cowell)

was checking and tallying names while Pussi Galore

(Carla Hyduk) finished decorating and greeting the

other cohorts in this latest Bondesque adventure.

Our bus driver was dubbed "Odd Jobs" from the

007 movie Goldfinger helped load the baggage and once

notified that everyone was present, headed for the north

county stop. Once all were aboard at the northern check

point, we all enjoyed a fitful dinner of pastrami wraps

that got many compliments from the group. The rest of

the 8 hour trip was filled with James Bond movies and

pleasant conversation.

The next morning was cool and crisp with all lifts

running. The whole day offered excellent visibility, no

wind and slightly crusty skiing. The weather held for

the next two days when it started to blow a bit with the

temperature hovering around freezing. There were a

couple gals from the club that took the Cat Trax trip that

included a trip on a Snowcat and lunch. On Friday

night, 007 and 008 coordinated a special treat to visit

the Mammoth Ski museum (with the help of Mike San-

ford) that included hors d'oeuvres, and wine and an

extra special book signing from Dave McCoy, the foun-

der of Mammoth Mountain Resort. Then it was back on

the bus to Condo 25 for a 007 formal/semi-formal Pizza

Extravaganza where everyone dressed up as their favor-

ite bond or bond girl.

The Race Team was out in force and secured our

share of medals. The trip home was exciting with Bond

trivia and prizes with a special gift to all participants of

a 007 in 2010 long sleeve tee shirt, a hallmark of the

Bond series trips.

Rumor has it that 007 and 008

may be back in the not so

distant future.

MAD HATTER PARTY IS “TOPS”

Val Clem & I (Lynette Collins) would like to THANK Dennis

and Vicki Gowey and everyone who helped make the (Mad) Hat

Party a HUGE success. Peter Back, Denny Lanigan, Dennis

Wahl & Dennis Gowey were part of the set up committee who

helped move furniture. We had over 100 people attending this

fantastic evening. The food was exceptional and plentiful and

the band was WOW!! They even played an extra hour because

we were such a great audience. We had many newbies who

really got into the act wearing some really super hats.

We want to welcome, Pam & Dan, Grant, Sheila & Nancy.

Hopefully they will join and become our new friends. Cathy Nicho-

las & Will were in attendance as returning members. Thanks, for

helping, throughout the party go to: Edie Pike , Nora Cole, Candy

Cowell., Randy & Claire Mason and of course, Ken Zuorro.

Getchen Gines brought a Happy Birthday Cake for all to enjoy

for her sister, Gaetana Patton. The Hats were wonderful; it was

hard to choose the best for prizes. The big winner was Debi Young

whose hat was a Ski Chalet. Newbie Linda had an Ocean Scene on

her wonderful creation of a hat. Mike Sanford changed hats about

every 15 minutes to keep us guessing.

Thanks again to the Goweys who were our gracious hosts and to

all the volunteers who helped; and, of course, to the “Mad Hatter”

participants. We, Snowdrifters once again proved that “we sure

knows how to party”!!!!

San Diego Council Update Mike Sanford

PROGRAMS AND MEET-INGS Dave Arnold

Hey there, Snowdrifters!! Bubba here

with all the Council happenings.

At the risk of repeating myself, this is my last opportu-

nity to pitch the 80th FWSA anniversary and the 78th An-

nual FWSA Convention, hosted by your very own San

Diego Council of Ski Clubs (the infrastructure provided by

our very own, NISD).

By the time you read this we’ll be on top of the dates

for “The Big Party”. We’ve been at it for over a year to get

all things in place for a great weekend of events, parties,

educational panels, mixers and rubbing shoulders with

our compatriots from all over the western states. There

will be $100K of great ski trip stuff to buy on Friday

night’s Silent Auction.

Snowdrifters will have lots of volunteers over there

having fun. Remember, we are supporting the SDCSC

nominees for Man of the Year Hobie Schroeder (Torrey

Pines Ski Club) and woman of the Year Helen Harris (Don

Diego Ski Club). We have lots of former awardees and it is

appropriate to support our fellow Council club nominees

against other council nominees.

There will be valuable and informative instructional

panels plus some great invited topical speakers and loads

of parties over the weekend. There will be “celebrity stars”

as guests, golfing at a PGA Championship course, a

“Poker Play” pub crawl Friday night, a fabulous spa and

lots more to enjoy over an eventful weekend< Uh, speak-

ing of the spa, seems as though this has become the

“activity de jour” and several of the boys are going to be

enjoying the Champagne lunch with the ladies. YES! Trust

me, you’ll have a great time. Go to www.fwsa.org for info.

The annual San Diego Alpine League Awards Happy

Hour was held at Seau’s Restaurant on 10 May. It was very

nice and lots of NISD’ers were recognized for their accom-

plishments on the race course. Nearly fifty folks attended

and several of your club mates enjoyed receiving recogni-

tion. Of course, NISD won lots of individual and team

awards. By the way, the eats were pretty good as well.

The summer will include lots of picnics by other clubs

and summer sports like biking, picnics, beach activities

and camping outings. Planning is also beginning for Ski

Jam, the annual Fall ski show. NISD has always been a

strong supporter of this annual show, the biggest in San

Diego. Other FWSA/Council goings on, including trip info and

the summer activities, can be found on the FWSA web-

site at www.fwsa.org.

The last indoor meeting of the 2010 ski season

turned out well. We had more people show up

then expected, so we moved the meeting outside to the patio,

which gave Nick Cowell, our new Club President and the other

speakers a great venue to talk. Nick let us know that your first

outdoor meeting of the summer season will be at Kate Sessions

Park on Mount Soledad. He talked about the City Council want-

ing to enact the 24-hour alcohol ban at Kate Sessions Park, which

means you should check our web-site at:

www.nisnowdrifter.com/index.htm each month to see if the meet-

ing is still planned at the Kate Sessions site. We have been led to

believe that the SD City Council has tabled any further action on

Kate Sessions for this year; but then again, it is the SD City Coun-

cil and they have been known to make changes. He gave the floor

to our guest speakers that included Eileen Stanford, Snowdrifter

member and San Diego Council President, Board members Bill

Altonen (Travel Director) and Jamie Ramey (Communications

Director) and others.

Eileen told us about the upcoming FWSA Convention this

June in Palm Spring’s that is being sponsored by the San Diego

Council of Ski Clubs. This is a great event to go to since it is in

our back yard. If you don’t have the time for the full four days,

you can attend a single evening on Friday to participate in the

Silent Auction. To get more information about this great event,

go to the ski council’s website at http://www.skisandiego.org/.

Jamie talked about the future of the club and finding out what

people want from the club. The board has made up a survey for

the members to complete. There has been good participation and

the results are posted on the Club Web-site. Bill talked about the

trips we are running next year, which will include four trips to

Mammoth and flyaways to Park City and Whistler.

Again, as a reminder, our next General Club Meet-

ing is outdoors at Kate Sessions Park. It is scheduled

for Friday, June 18th (instead of Friday, June 11th, as

previously reported). The meeting will formally start

at 6:30pm.

Come early to enjoy the food and friends Mark it on your cal-

endar and plan on joining us for dogs with fixing's and the usual

supporting supplies. Bring a dish to share.

Membership Update Lynette Collins

The Prez’ Sez’: Greetings Snowdrifters:

is cause for disqualification.) Anyone who has partici-

pated on the racing team will tell you that they improved

their overall skiing abilities because of the experience. If

you have considered racing in the past, “just do it” next

year, you won’t regret it!

Please take NOTE !! The next Club meeting will be

outside at Kate Sessions Park. There is a new date for the

June meeting: It has been changed to Friday, June 18th

(due to the Far West Convention).

We have an exciting skiing schedule next year. We

will be going to Mammoth Mountain four times; once in

early January, then, in mid-February, and twice in the

month of March( mid and end of March continuing into

early April). Our fly away trips are Park City Utah in mid-

January, and Whistler, end of February to early March.

The trips are spaced out enough to allow everyone the

opportunity to go on all trips.

This and That…

The Club is still looking for an engaging and

energetic special member who would be inter-

ested in becoming the Snowdrifter “Sun „N Ici-

cles” Newsletter Editor.

You’ve read in these pages many times over the years

of the Club’s need to have its members “step up and get

involved”. Now is one of those times. We are seeking

someone who can spare about 20 hours a month, has a

keen editorial eye and would like to carry on the tradi-

tion of this award–winning publication. If you’ve ever

considered being a writer or publisher, there is no better

place to start. Some computer skills are needed and

training/support will be part of the turnover package.

Contact any member of the Board of Directors or the

Newsletter Editor directly at (760) 749-9416 if you are

interested.

Look for the results of our recent survey on our

web-site www.nisnowdrifter.com.

Mark your calendar for a Join-Us get-together at the

Coyote Bar and Grill in Carlsbad. The festivities start

around 5:00 pm. Cozy fire-rings, food and refreshments

can be purchased from the restaurant, live music and

dancing. Contact Shannon Miller (760) 722-2734 or

Teri Christofk (760) 720-7254 for more information

and specifics.

Bunco Update

Thanks to Lori & Paul Kilmer for hosting the first of the 2010

series of Bunco Parties. It was a great time with old and new

friends, excellent food and a lovely home and surroundings.

There were 24 players and lots of action and noise as the Bun-

cos came out throughout the evening. Our winners were Peter

Back (most Wins), Gretchen Gines (most Loses) and Lynette

Collins for rolling the most Buncos.

The next Bunco Party is Saturday, July 24th at Neil & Hilda

King’s home. Lynette Collins is the co-hostess with the mostest

for this event. Contact either for details and reservations.

WELCOME to the beginning of another fun filled ski club

year. I am really excited about the opportunity to serve as your

Membership Director. I am going to work hard and need your

help to build our membership. I've been a NI member since 2001

and consider many of you my family. You've been there for me

through some really difficult challenges in my life these past cou-

ple of years. I know many of you feel the same about this won-

derful group of friends that is this Club. Thanks!!

N. I. has many free and fun events and it has begun to effect

our balance sheet and financial stability. Also, beginning in 2009,

we became totally responsible for all insurance costs of a Club of

our type with the associated risks. After serious consideration of

all the issues affecting our ability to remain a viable and a net

positive cost-benefit organization, it has become necessary to

increase our yearly dues. A discount involving the Newsletter

is offered, as well. Single memberships will increase to $45.00

(with a $5.00 discount if your chose not to receive a mailed News-

letter) and $65.00 for a family ($60.00 w/o the mailed Newsletter).

We get so much for so little that it is still such a great bargain for

your money. Renew your Club membership early and help make

the Snowdrifters 2010-2011 season the Club’s best year ever with

increased membership.

Since we are, also, trying to cut costs, we would like to cut

down on mailing out Newsletters, where possible. We are offer-

ing a $5.00 discount for those of you who chose not to get a

mailed Newsletter. Try viewing your monthly Newsletter on-

line. It is not only quick & easy, it will save postage & printing

costs and help our environment.

This coming year I would like to have a few membership

"Happy Hours" and other events. I am encouraging members to

bring a friend or neighbor. Remember, we are more than a ski

club, we are "lots of fun" and “lots of good friends”. Please call

me with any ideas, suggestions or comments about ways we can

have fun and attract new members.
