The Praxis Perspective

Entrepreneurship is thriving and well in Canada. Our dollar is hovering near parity with the U.S. and our interest rates are fairly stable…...for now. For exporters the dollar may not be the greatest thing since sliced bread but one thing we know about entrepreneurs—they flex with the environment. They see opportunities where others may see barriers.

Most exporters know we cannot rely on outside factors for success. The only true was to success is to remain passionate, committed, and creative. It is not unlike what successful athletes do. Their passion is what drives them to get up each day and train for hours; their commitment and creativity helps them find a way to finance their sport; and their integrity shines in the fair play that they exhibit. Their tenacity is what keeps their eye on the goal of being the best they can be at what they do, regardless of adversity.

You will also see that these tenets are important in sales and marketing as well. On Page Six of this newsletter, James ties these qualities together from a sales perspective.

Success is something we define and we create. It isn’t because the economy suddenly improved, or the dollar changed, or interest rates declined—it is because we chose to keep our focus, anticipate the changes, train our intellect and entrepreneurial mind, create relationships, hire the best, and last but not least, serve our customers to the best of our ability.

So my friends, continue to keep your eye on success, stay true to your goals - long term and short. Keep going when the going gets tough and most importantly - love what you do! Monica Kreuger

Thinking Outside the Box - Creativity and Entrepreneurship An entrepreneur, by virtue of being an entrepreneur, is creative. Having said that, of course there are business owners who are “stuck” in a rut; have not changed their ways for years; have become complacent in their management style and no longer have the creative juices needed to continue to build an exciting enterprise. But they will not be the ones that are at the top of their field and if they recognize themselves here, they can certainly reverse the flow. Where does creativity come from? For many of us, it comes when we are backed into a corner. A bill is due and we have no money, a project that was due was moved up a week and we have no time – we become very creative then. But creativity also comes from “thinking outside the box”. It comes from being outside our comfort zone and constantly having everything we take for granted, shaken up. Successful entrepreneurs thrive on being uncomfortable and in fact, get very worried if they are feeling too comfortable because it means they are starting to take some things for granted – that can mean missed opportunities and that is not what they want to see.

Think about what happens when you get too comfortable. If you take the same route to work every morning, what happens? Most of us work/drive/function almost on auto pilot. We kind of “blank out” everything around us because we have traveled that way for years. Or we get up every morning and go through the same routine before we go to work. We could probably do it while we are still half asleep! Try taking a different route to work or try reversing the order in which you do your morning routine, or try having desert for breakfast and cereal for supper. Shake up your day and see what happens. The first thing you will notice is that you will be looking at the road signs, noticing the traffic more, noticing the billboard that you hadn’t seen before – in other words – you become more aware and as you become more aware, your senses open up to the opportunities around you. Successful entrepreneurs do this without thinking. They intuitively know that if they haven’t thought of something new lately, they have to shake up their world a bit again. And that is the ultimate goal– feeling comfortable with being uncomfortable. That is when you know you are “living outside the box”, not just dreaming it. responsible. innovative. resourceful

The Program Itself

The Special Support Program (SSP) is the Saskatchewan Government’s prescription drug subsidization program. It is intended to assist people with high prescription drug costs by paying a portion of these costs. How much will the SSP pay? The short answer is that it depends but the government takes the following factors into consideration: ♦ Number of dependents ♦ Previous six months’ worth of drug claims ♦ The co-payment amount ♦ Other government coverage available

Coverage Under the SSP

♦ Covers only those drugs listed under the Saskatchewan Formulary (as of March 2007 includes approx. 3,700 prescription drugs)

♦ This contrasts sharply worth the coverage afforded most group benefit plans. Most plans provide coverage for all drugs listed under the Prescription Drug Plan which currently includes approximately 9,500 drugs.

♦ Given this difference, a prescription drug that is eligible for coverage under a group plan might not be covered under the SSP

The SSP and Your Group Benefits Plan Many group benefits carriers are now responding to the SSP by implementing prescription drug cost thresholds ranging from between $500 - $1,200 per family. Once a family reaches this threshold, a carrier can suspend claims payment until such time as the employee provides proof that he or she has applied for coverage under the SSP. Given this and the potential for long de-lays in being approved for and receiving coverage under the SSP, Wiegers Benefits recommends that you apply for it now, regardless of your current prescription drug needs. Application forms are available online at : http://formulary.drugplan.health.gov.sk.ca/Special%20Support.asp or you can pick one up at a community pharmacy or request one from Saskatchewan Health in Regina at (306)787-3317 or toll free at (800) 667-7581.

A sensible solution

The creation of K21 was greatly enhanced by the knowledge I gained and the coaching I received while completing Praxis’s Self Employment Program. Praxis presented a practical, organized, well thought out program that took me sequentially through the steps needed to bring the concept of a viable business to fruition. The solid training from Praxis coupled with my own 40 years in all aspects of the printing industry has resulted in a business I am proud to present to the public. A big thanks to Praxis and all the fellow entrepreneurs who travelled the program’s path with me. All have walked away enriched by our time together. - Ken Cahill

Simple Sales Tips For Success

If you have not asked this then you are not done:

What would it take to earn your business today?

James Kernaghan,

Profit Source Sales Training Ltd.

Answering the above question may be tricky. You know your product is great, others do too. What would it take though for new people to come in your door or for those who do, to keep coming back? You must work hard to draw customers in. A product cannot sell itself.

Luckily, as an Entrepreneur, you have a great advantage. Your personality, enthusiasm and exuberance is contagious for your customers and makes sales that more easy. Entrepreneurial spirit also shows itself in the following qualities:

♦ Creativity

♦ Passion

♦ Integrity

♦ Tenacity

♦ Commitment

Creativity The creative Entrepreneur will continually come up with sales ideas that differ from the norm. Business cards may be replaced by a sample of the product. Use various medias to advertise and make the product itself seem unique.

Passion

Like creativity, passion is something that cannot be faked and customers know it. Being passionate about what you’re selling and believing in what you sell is easily communicated to your customer.

Integrity

Integrity is defined as follows:

“adherence to moral and ethical

principles; soundness of moral

character; honesty.”

This is probably the most important quality to have in sales. When convincing a customer to buy your product, you build a relationship—it’s paramount that that relationship is built on trust. It’s what will bring a customer back and have that customer recommend your product to another customer. Tenacity

Rejection comes with the territory. Having the tenacity to carry on and believing in what you are selling is not easy. Being someone who sees possibilities in the face of the most difficult of challenges will help you be the most successful. Commitment

Some sales may take months to finalize. Keeping focused takes a lot of commitment. By combining all of the essential qualities, you will sell your product and earn your customers. This can only happen with commitment to your company - especially if it is your own. Keep reaching for your dream and it will happen. - Information gathered from various Internet Sources
