NEW THIS MONTH
KOENIGSEGG REGERA
In the battle for the most extreme hypercar in
the world, it would appear that Sweden has
won. The new Koenigsegg Regera is powered
by a twin-turbo 5-liter V8 and three electric
motors, and produces at least 1,500hp. This
number could rise to as much as 1,800hp if
it was running on more potent ethanol fuel.
It’s supremely fast; 0-100km/h is dealt with in
2.8 seconds and it can reach its top speed of
400km/h in less than 20 seconds.

Every month, we receive dozens of product announcements
and mentions, sit through many a launch event and try
out all kinds of devices. All these products are then carefully
curated by our crack team of tech gurus. The final list is
presented here in Gear and it is our hope you’ll find
something to geek-out to.

Of all watch complications, the GMT complication is arguably the most practical and useful. The
name, however, is a bit of a misnomer and it doesn’t help that there are two different types of
GMT watches, thus causing a lot of confusion to newcomers. This month, we explore the roots of the
GMT complication and how to use it effectively.
WATCHES IN-DEPTH:Making the most out of your GMT watch.
by Kenny Yeo
HISTORY OF THE GMT
To understand the GMT complication, it is first
necessary to learn about how it came to be. The
abbreviation GMT refers to Greenwich Mean Time,
which became the global time standard in 1884 - it
has since been supplanted by UTC (Coordinated
Universal Time) in 1972. The GMT complication was
invented by Rolex in 1954 specifically for Pan Am
Airways who needed a watch for their pilots to keep
track of multiple time zones. This watch was the
GMT Master and it had an additional hour hand that
was linked to the main hour hand such that it always
showed the hours in a 24-hour format. By rotating the
24-hour scale bezel, pilots could then quickly tell the
time in a second time zone. In practice, many pilots
set the bezel such that they could quickly tell what
the Greenwich Mean Time was and from there on
calculate the time in other time zones. As a result of
this, the GMT complication is sometimes referred to as
a second time zone complication.

1. Second hand.
2. Minute hand.
3. Independent 12-Hour hand: like a conventional watch,
displays AM and PM local time.
4. 24-Hour hand: usually arrow-shaped, displays
24-hour home time.
5. Date window.
6. Setting crown, three positions: screwed in/out, setting
position 1, setting position 2.
7. Bidirectional rotating bezel: when present, either features
24-hour markings, 360 degrees bearing, 60 minutes
divisions or major cities’ names.
