A Word From The Coordinator
Paula Schutt
Greetings! I am writing this from the
wonderful city of Green Bay. How
exciting to be visiting the home of our
very own Green Bay Packers! I am attending the
Wisconsin Parks and Recreation Association’s annu-
al conference and what an experience. Yesterday
our keynote speaker was none other than Wayne
Larrivee, the announcer for the Green Bay Packer’s
Radio Network!
I will be returning from the conference with a num-
ber of exciting new ideas for programming! My first
full year as Grinnell’s Coordinator is almost done
and it has just sped by! I am looking forward to add-
ing additional programs I know you will enjoy for
2014!
As we move into the last month of 2013, I am taking
some time to reflect on all the wonderful things that
have happened this year, as well as all the new
friends I have made.
I wish you all a very blessed Christmas and a peace-
ful, friend and family filled new year!

The Art of Belly Dancing Go ahead, admit it, the title of this article caught
your attention, didn’t it? There is so much more to
this form of art and exercise than meets the eye. Be-
fore you dismiss it, take a few moments and read
through the article. What is belly dance? The most
basic definition -- it's movement isolation, usually in
the torso, set to music. However, there are many cul-
tural, historical, and fantasy components and conno-
tations to this
dance form. It is
believed that
various forms of
belly dance have
been around for
thousands of
years. We do
know that just a
few hundred years ago it was used to commemorate
momentous occasions in an individual's life, to cele-
brate community festivals, or simply to entertain. In
1893, belly dance was used to draw Americans to the
Chicago World Fair. Vaudeville soon started includ-
ing belly dancers in its shows. Hollywood eventually
incorporated belly dancers into movies. There's a per-
ception that belly dance was all about women danc-
ing for men's enjoyment. However, that is a more re-
cent development. Historically, women danced with
and for other women. Today, we have several purely
American forms of belly dance.
The bottom line is that belly dance is great exer-
cise, building core muscle strength, focusing on
posture, enhancing coordination, and challenging
the brain. Most of all it is just great fun! (continued on next page)
Books For Kids Share the magic of reading with
area children this Christmas by
donating new or gently used chil-
dren’s books to the “Books For
Kids” program sponsored by the
Beloit Daily News. We will have a collection box
located here at Grinnell until Tuesday, December
17. Bring in your donation of books and bring a
smile to a child’s face this year.

hour class once a week for 8 eight weeks begin-
ning at 1:00 p.m. You may purchase an 8 week punch card for just $55.00. Pre-registration is re-quired for this class and a minimum of four students is required to hold the class. To register, call 608-
Strong Women Class To Begin in January Beginning in January, 2014,Grinnell Senior Center
will begin offering an 8 week class to help wom-en improve their strength and balance. The StrongWomen Pro-gram is a national evi-dence-based community exercise and nutrition program targeted to mid-life and older women. Dr. Miriam E. Nelson and colleagues have devel-
oped and evaluated two curricula. The first is a strength training curriculum to help women maintain muscle mass, strength, and function as they age. The second is a heart disease prevention program that focuses on aerobic activity and nutrition. The StrongWomen Strength Training Program grew out of research published by Dr. Miriam E. Nelson on bone density in older adults, which became popu-lar through her first book, Strong Women Stay
Young. The program began in 2003 with the devel-opment of the StrongWomen Strength Training Pro-gram curriculum and StrongWomen workshops, which train women to become program leaders. The class will be held for 8 weeks on Tuesday and
Thursday at 1:00 p.m. and begins on Tuesday,
January 14. The cost of the class is $30.00 for the
8 week session for members of Grinnell and
$35.00 for non-members. Premiere Members of
Grinnell can take the class for just $25.00. There will be an informational session on Tuesday, Janu-
ary 7 at 1:00 p.m. that you must attend if you are interested in participating. The class will be taught by Beth Bausman, a trained instructor.
Grinnell Bookies Skipping Christmas is a comedy novel by John Grisham. The group will meet at 1:00 p.m. on Monday
December 16.
The story focuses on how Luther and Nora Krank try to avoid the frenzy traditionally experienced during the Christmas holiday. On the Sunday after Thanksgiving the two take their daughter Blair to the airport, where she departs for a year-long assign-ment in a remote area of Peru with the
Peace Corps. Nora bemoans the fact that the upcoming Christ-mas will be the first time they have been separated as a family, prompting her husband to calculate how much they spent cele-brating the holidays the previous year. When he realizes they have little to show for the $6,100 they invested in decorations, gifts, and entertaining, he decides to skip all the hubbub at home and surprise Nora by booking a ten-day cruise.

Executive Director
Robert W. Harlow
It’s hard to believe that we are
sending out our last newsletter
for 2013.
Boy the time sure does fly by!
As we end 2013 we reflect upon the conclusion of
our 40th year and the wonderful contributions of our
volunteers over the years.
While there have been changes in terms of our of-
fice locations, funding levels and expansions or cre-
ation of new programs, one thing remained constant
throughout four decades. The commitment and
dedication of our volunteers is unwavering. We
remember those volunteers who have passed on,
deeply appreciate our current volunteers and wel-
come the new volunteers we enlist every month.
The thought occurs to me that many of the children
served in our Intergenerational Programs during the
70’s have children and even grandchildren who
have also been touched by this program. That’s
quite a legacy!
You will be receiving this newsletter just before the
Christmas holiday. I would like to take this time to
wish all of our volunteers, community partners,
staff and Boards a very healthy and happy Holiday
Season. I hope you all have a wonderful 2014 as
well.

Pat Tilton
Pat was born and raised on the Eastern Shore of
Virginia, a peninsula bordered by the Atlantic
Ocean and Chesapeake Bay. After high school
graduation she enlisted in the United States Ma-
rines, serving from 1966 to 1969. Wisconsin
has been her home for 43 years. She previously
worked for Dean Health System and is currently
employed as fill-in nutrition coordinator for Rock
County Council on Aging. She and her husband
Jack, live in Janesville. They have 4 children, 12
grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Pat enjoys
reading, baking, bicycling, walking and posting pic-
tures of her little grand kids on Facebook.
Pat has served on the RSVP Board since 2008. She
is currently Secretary. Pat’s Board term will end in
2014.
Retired & Senior Volunteer Program of Rock County. Inc. December 2013
Marveline started volunteering for SVS in Sept-
ember 2011. She has taken many people for doctor
appointments, to the grocery store and other ap-
pointments. She has also volunteered in other
parts of the program visiting people in their home
and going to see previous clients in the nursing
home. In March of 2012 her husband Bruce start-
ed volunteering with her. They take most people
together, but have taken people separately also.
It’s a good way to spend time together while help-
ing people to get to appointments and the grocery
store. Together they have taken 39 different peo-
ple and still counting.
Both Marvellene and Bruce are retired, Marvelene
from Beloit Corporation and Bruce from Warner
Brake and Clutch Company.
I would like to thank Bruce and Marvellene for
their dedication to the program.
Marvelene and Ken Winchester
I would also like to thank all of the SVS volunteers
who donate so much time to the program, without
you there would be no program. I greatly appreciate
everything that each one of you does.
Happy Holidays to all of you.

Volunteer Opportunities
Dear Santa, We here at RSVP have tried really hard to be good this
year. Would it be possible for you to bring us some of the
things on our wish list? The kind of things we need are
not for fun, but are useful. You know, things like copy
paper, HP 56 & 57, Lexmark 70 and Canon 225, 226 C
226M or 226Y ink cartridges for our printers, post-it-
notes, paper plates, napkins plastic utensils, styrofoam
cups, kleenex, paper towels, toilet tissue, cleaning sup-
plies, trash bags, gift cards from Staples or Office Max
and postage stamps. We know this is a long list, but with
funding as tight as it would be a great help.

It All Depends on How You Look At It!This is the December Newsletter already,
which means that the end of the year is close at hand
and all we have to look forward to is cold, snow and
more cold. Or you could think about it this way!
December 21st is the first day of winter; from then it
is only 43 days until Groundhog Day and from there
only 46 days until the first day of Spring. Now
doesn’t that make you feel a little better? Before
you know it those lovely crocuses, tulips and daffo-
dils will be peeking through and we will all be
watching for the first robins of spring.
Let’s Talk About Mileage Requests As most of you know RSVP offers mileage reim-bursement for all Community Referral and Inter-generational volunteering, if the volunteer re-quests it. This is 27 cents a mile round trip from home to the volunteer site and back home. The
cap is your mileage total or $33.75 per month
which ever is less.
We ask that our volunteers turn in their requests each month since our bookkeeper must close out each months finances separately. What makes things confusing for our volunteers is that we pay mileage every three months, so many of you will put three months on one request and this is where the confusion comes in. Reimburse-ment is figured on a monthly basis, so that even though you have a total number of miles for the three months to be able to claim the $33.75, if your mileage for one of those months is less than the cap amount, you will only be paid that months amount. It would really help if you would send in your in-dividual mileage requests each month, not only for the reimbursement but for the entering of hours on the computer. If you have any questions as to the reimbursement for mileage, please feel free to call us at 362-9593 or 756-4281.

Baby Yarn Do you enjoy making baby blan-
kets? We just received a nice
donation of baby yarn from
the WIC program and it would
be wonderful if one of our knit
or crochet people would turn it
into much needed baby items,
which we would then give back
to the WIC program.
Do it Anyway “People are often unreasonable,
illogical and self centered.
Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may ac-
cuse you of selfish, ulterior mo-
tives.
Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will
win some false friends and some
true enemies.
Succeed Anyway.
If you are honest and frank, peo-
ple may cheat you.
Be honest anyway.
What you spend years building,
someone could destroy over-
night.
Build anyway.
If you find serenity and happi-
ness, they may be jealous.
Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, people
will often forget tomorrow.
Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have
and it may never be enough.
Give the world the best you’ve
got anyway.
You see, in the final analysis it
is between you and God.
It was never between you and
them anyway”

would make it even better. If you
are interested call Vivian at 362-
9593 or 756-4281. For more
information call Pam
at 752-5622.
Sorry for the Inconvenience
It has been brought to our atten-
tion that in the past few months
volunteers have stopped by our
office and found it closed. The
reason this happens is that we
are a small office with two full
time employees and three part
time employees.
Quite often we have to be out of
the office at the same time with
programs, projects and meetings.
For your convenience it would
be better to give us a call at
362-9593 before you come to
make sure there is someone here
to greet you.
Retired & Senior Volunteer Program of Rock County, Inc. December 2013
The RSVP BABES program began in 1991. It is a primary prevention program designed to assist children, age three
through eight to develop positive living skills. Our program targets first grade classes in the area. BABES uses cuddly pup-
pets to tell five story lessons concerning self-image and feeling, decision making and peer pressure, coping, alcohol/drug
information and asking for help. The BABES lessons are supplemented with small group activities, music and work sheets.
Now lets meet the five puppets that make up the BABES program. We have Buttons and Bows McKitty, they are brother
and sister kittens who live in Pudding Heights. There is their friend Myth Mary, who is a misinformed squirrel who repeats
everything she hears without finding out if it is true or not. Early Bird always gives early warning signals for wrong deci-
sions or self defeating behaviors. He likes to give a “Honk, Honk” warning and the children will “Honk” back. Donavan
Dignity is the wise owl that always has a lesson that is as easy as 1, 2, 3 to share with everyone. Recovering Rhonda is a
dog who portrays a recovering alcohol and drug addict. She shares a lot of good information with the children.
