Pleased to meet you!

T he force for positive change is within us all. Famous humanistic psychologist Carl Rogers referred to it as the

“actualising tendency” – our innate desire for growth and development.

And, whilst there has been an ever increasing thirst for knowledge as to peak performance and optimal human development, it wasn’t until the Positive Psychology movement emerged in thelate 1990s that the science allowed us to identify the essential psychological needs we all have and strategies we can take to increase our overall well-being.

Positive Psychology is the science of optimal human functioning – for individuals, groups, teams, organisations, communities and society.

The science of Positive Psychology is now close to 20 years old and merging with fields like Neuroscience, Medicine, Education, Economics and Business.

The research base, whilst growing, is full to the brim with possibilities for applications in the real world! Those who were the brave pioneers have already gathered some evidence to attest to its benefits.

The Positivity Institute was created and launched with the aim to bring this science to life and to continue as an “Institute” to investigate and add to the knowledge base of Positive Psychology. Our aim is to create flourishing lives and increase the well-being of the world. In our profession, this is known as a BHAG – a big, hairy, audacious goal. We hope you can join us in some way to attain this goal!

The Positivity Institute (PI) is a positively deviant organisationdedicated to the research and practice of well-being science forlife, school and work. PI’s BHAG (big, hairy, audacious goal) is tocreate flourishing lives and increase the well-being of the world!

P I recognises that evidence-based coaching is an integral part of creating a positive educational culture, improving performance,

well-being and transferring knowledge gained from training into sustainable change.

Three meta-analysis studies (Theeboom, Beersma @ van Vianen, 2014; Jones, Woods, & Guillaume, 2015; Sonesh et al., 2015) and one systematic review (Lai & McDowall, 2014) have provided evidence that coaching is effective. Collectively, these studies show that coaching has significant positive effects on performance, skills, well-being, coping, work attitudes, and goal-directed self-regulation.

Dr Suzy Green’s own pioneering research on the positive impact of evidence-based coaching in schools continues to underpin ongoing work in the field of Positive Education. Having conducted a world first study on evidence-based life coaching, Dr Suzy Green has leveraged this expertise to further investigate the tangible benefits of coaching in schools.

PI School ServicesPI School Services help schools to flourish. Our evidence-based approach

School Coaching Services

T here has been an explosion of interest in coaching within the educational sector in recent years and coaching is increasingly

being seen as a useful intervention to support students, teachers, school leaders, principals and administrators.

Compelling research demonstrates that experiencing high levels of psychological well-being (i.e. ‘feeling good’) is associated with enhanced performance (ie ‘doing well’).

Evidence is now mounting to attest to the impact that student well-being has on academic performance (Waters, 2011; Adler, 2016). Much of the focus on well-being is in recognition of the increasing statistics on psychological distress and mental illness in our children and adolescents, and the realisation of the need to take a more proactive path than reactive approach to mental health.

Coaching for Students

Dr Suzy Green’s research has contributed significant evidence of the efficacy of evidence based coaching to support academic

achievement and promote the well-being of students. For example, increases in cognitive hardiness and hope and a significant decrease in levels of depression were seen in one study with senior high school students (Green, Grant, Rynsaardt 2007). Subsequent work which investigated a strengths-based coaching program for junior school students found that the coaching was associated with increases in the student’s self-reported levels of engagement and again hope (Madden, Green & Grant, 2011). In another study, earlier results were well supported with senior high school participants showing an increase in well-being, hope, and cognitive hardiness, and significant decrease in depression, anxiety and stress (Dulagil, Green & Ahern, 2016).

Other researchers in the field have also shown that coaching impacts positively on emotional intelligence, academic achievement and attitudes to learning with benefits for those being coached and those delivering the coaching (van Nieuwerburgh and Passmore 2012, van Nieuwerburgh and Tong 2013, van Nieuwerburgh et al., 2012).

Coaching for Teachers & School Leaders

Grant, Green and colleagues (2010) studied the impact of developmental coaching on teachers. They found that participants (i.e. teachers) reported significant increases in goal attainment, enhanced workplace well-being and resilience as well as a significant reduction in stress. The coaching also appeared to support teachers to develop positive leadership styles. These findings suggest that coaching has great potential to contribute to the professional development and well-being of teachers in an educational setting.

Other studies have also demonstrated a clear link between the coaching of teachers and the achievement of their students (Ross, 1992; Shidler, 2009). Coaching of teachers can increase levels of student engagement (Brown et al, 2008) and can also play an important role in supporting teachers to reflect on their practice in the classroom and encourage the development of professional learning relationships between educators (Brown et al, 2008).

Overall research suggests coaching enhances goal striving, well-being, hope and resilience.

A Proactive Approach

W e promote a broader mental health and well-being strategy that integrates Positive Psychology and Coaching

Psychology (Positive Education) and provides a proactive and highly effective approach to developing higher levels of whole school well-being (Green, 2014; Robson-Kelly 2018.)

Recent government research shows us that one in seven young people aged 4 to 17 years experience a mental health condition in any given year. The latest Principal Health & Well-being Survey (Riley, 2019) tells us that school leaders report lower than average levels of general health, lower positive measures for well-being and higher levels of burnout and stress symptoms. Teachers generally report the highest level of occupational stress in Australia, the United Kingdom and America (Bailey, 2013; Education, 2014; Milburn, 2011).

Research also tells us that teachers may start

to experience stress from their first year of classroom teaching. In particular, beginning teachers (BTs) seem to be more vulnerable to the pressures of the profession compared to experienced teachers (Gold & Roth, 1993. Experiencing a high level of stress seems to be detrimental for teachers’ well-being (Harmsen, Helms-Lorenz, Maulana, van Veen, & van Veldhoven, 2016).

Creating a Coaching Culture

U sing a collaborative approach, we systematically and methodically identify the specific development

opportunities of the individual and the organisation in the planning phase and design tailored solutions specifically for each client and circumstance.

The creation of a coaching culture for learning can enhance the educational experience for everyone involved. When coaching is implemented strategically in the context of a ‘whole school approach’ it can be the vital link between school leaders goals, teachers goals, student outcomes and the overall effectiveness of the whole school.

The aim of creating a coaching culture in schools is to equip all individuals with the skills to positively influence the overall school culture through enhanced collaboration, communication and

organisational well-being through a ‘positive ripple effect’. In this way, PI helps the school to make a significant and sustainable contribution to the success of their leaders, teachers, students; supporting the whole school community and society more broadly.
