Table of Contents

Analysis Paralysis ……………………………………………………………1 This is a condition where a person becomes so confused between head and heart, and between wants and anxiety that he is rendered paralyzed from taking any action. This letter offers a free analysis paralysis screening.

Chinese Symbols—The Market Has Been Volatile! What Should We Do? ………………………………………………..………2 The Chinese have a symbol for the word “crisis” consisting of two characters—one meaning danger and the other meaning opportunity. This describes the present market environment.

Controlled Terror ……………………………………………………………3 Someone once said that piloting an airplane consists of very long periods of boredom occasionally interrupted by a few seconds of controlled terror. I do my best to remain constantly alert on your behalf through all the intervals of calm as well as the crises.

Financial Spring Cleaning …………………………………………………..4 Financial goals often seem to get pushed aside or forgotten because day-today activities or demands seem to get in the way. With spring just around the corner, I suggest this would be a good time to review your financial goals and evaluate your progress.

Garden Grows ………………………………………………………………..5 It’s that time of year again when spring fever seems to stir garden dreams. As you ponder projects you’ll tackle this year in your yard, consider your financial garden. Does it need some new seeds, rich compost, or some tilling perhaps?

Going Conservative 1 ………………………………………………………..6 After studying your portfolio recently, we should meet to see if you would benefit by lowering your risk level. (This may not apply to everyone.)

Going Conservative 2 ………………………………………………………..7 I recently mailed you a letter counseling you to consider whether you might want to become more conservative with your investments, or whether it’s steady as she goes. Leaving things as they are might be the correct action, but it is a decision that we should make together. (This may not apply to everyone.)

Going Conservative 3 ………………………………………………………..8 Earlier this year we made a suggestion to lower your risk level on your portfolio. You may want to consider lowering your risk level even more. To do so, we must have your permission. (This may not apply to everyone.)

If You Don’t Know ……………………………………………………...…...9 If you don’t know where you are going, then how do you know when you get there?

Regardless of what the market does in the short-term, your goals in life don't go away. All the important goals in life need a well-developed plan. How well are you planning these days?

It’s Time Again ……………………………………………………………..10 Once again, it's time to get together to review your financial plan.

Suggestion: Use this for people you have not seen in a while.

Life Insurance Review ……………………………………………………...11 Part of my job as your financial advisor is to help you manage the risk in your life.

Suggestion: This is the optimum for "insurance only" clients or perhaps clients you know have insurance with other agents.

New Year Inventory ………………………………………………………..12 It is always good to take a few moments for evaluation and this time of year seems especially appropriate for that. Here are a few financial things I would like to encourage you to take inventory on: Wills & Powers, Insurance, Roth IRA, Trust Fully Funded, and Transfer on Death.

Overdue Questions …………………………………………………………14 Humorous questions on the Web, “Why have we not gotten together more often? We are overdue for a review!”

Suggestion: Use this on clients you know have other brokerage accounts.

Post Birthday Review ………………………………………………………15 After we spoke the other day, I started thinking about the work we’ve done over the past year. I realized that it’s time for us to get together for a full portfolio review.

Comprehensive Review—Review All Investments ……………………....16 To better assist us in this comprehensive review, please gather all of your financial statements, tax returns, etc., and bring them with you so that together we can better see your entire investment plan.

Suggestion: Obviously use this one for people you suspect have outside assets.

Road Map to Success ……………………………………………………….17 With investing, there’s no guide that’s guaranteed to get you to your destination. But what you can do is stop periodically to check your progress, to consult your plan to make sure that you’re sticking to it. That’s why I encourage all my clients to have annual portfolio reviews.

Page 4: The Portfolio Review Letters Book - Bill Goodbillgood.com/letters/ThePortfolioReviewLettersBook2015.pdf · Suggestion: Use this for people you have not seen in a while. ... Suggestion:

The Perfect Excuse ……………………………………………………….....18 I’m giving you, free-of-charge, a brand new excuse you can have for your very own. It’s called the “I can’t, I have to go to a portfolio review with my financial advisor” excuse, and it works like a charm.

Trust and Confidence ……………………………………………………....20 Thank you for the trust and confidence you have placed in me. I enjoy our relationship and consider you a valued business friend.

Please call us to set up a review appointment. Please list on the enclosure the annuities you have, and bring that with you to this review.

Year End—The market has been volatile! The end (of the year) is near! ……………………………………………....22 Before the year ends, we need to get together for a year-end review of your portfolio.

Suggestion: This could be very important for people who want to take tax losses before the end of the year.

Year End Review—Changes Are in Order ……………………………….23 A quick note before the end of the year: I have just completed a review of your portfolio, and I feel some changes are in order prior to the end of this year.

Suggestion: Send this to people for whom changes obviously should be made. You will get nearly 100% of people calling in from this letter.

Dear «Salutation»:

Analysis Paralysis Once upon a time, there was a very intelligent man who just couldn’t get himself to make important decisions. “Do I start investing for my retirement now, or do I wait? Should I take investment risks and maybe get a high return on my money, or play it safe and make sure I keep it?” No matter how hard he tried, he just couldn’t seem to get past the analysis stage of the decision-making process. So off to the doctor he went, to find an explanation for his problem. After hours of intensive testing, the doctor informed his patient that he suffered from a severe case of Analysis Paralysis. “Just what is Analysis Paralysis?” asked the man. Said the doctor, “If you look in the big medical dictionary, you will find it defined as: 1) A paralyzing confusion between head and heart, and between wants and anxiety. 2) An uncontrollable desire to do one thing, but, uh ... maybe another … until a person is rendered immobile, or frozen.” Well, our “medical facility” is offering a FREE ANALYSIS PARALYSIS SCREENING. Our state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment is just a phone call or a visit away, completely painless, and could help put you on the road to recovery from Analysis Paralysis. You will soon be making those important financial decisions that you just couldn’t before. «SV1stName» will call to set up our review appointment. Sincerely,

Dear «Salutation»:

The Market Has Been Volatile! What Should We Do? There are many factors involved in the wild swings we have watched. You’ve got hedge funds, trade balance, oil prices, housing market, and debt crises, all mixed in a sour witch’s brew.

The Chinese have a symbol for the word “crisis” consisting of two characters—one meaning danger and the other meaning opportunity. This describes the present market environment. It is as important as ever to make sure your investments are properly aligned with your goals and to try to capitalize on the potential opportunities.

That’s why we need to schedule a review, sooner rather than later. I have a lot of questions for you to make sure our strategy is aligned with your goals.

Please call me for an appointment at «CompanyPhone».

Whether we have a crisis or opportunity, the time for action is now.

Controlled TerrorSomeone once said that piloting an airplane consists of very long periods of boredom occasionally interrupted by a few seconds of controlled terror.

I do not bring up this point to arouse the fear of imminent loss that lurks in each of us. Rather, I want to say that—without raising financial well-being to the same level as human life—I try to be just like a good airline pilot myself. I do my best to remain constantly alert on your behalf, through all the intervals of calm as well as the crises.

That duty requires that I consult with you periodically, to make sure that we are actually headed where you want to go. Please call «CompanyPhone» to schedule your review.

Your role in this exercise is to decide whether the strategy we last agreed upon remains as right for you today as it was yesterday. My role is to raise all the appropriate red flags along the way.

As always, thank you for your continued business and support.

Dear «Salutation»:

Spring Is Just Around the Corner Recently, my spouse and I were discussing projects around the house that never quite got done before the cold weather set in, or funds were diverted to other parts of the budget. We both agreed that there were more than enough items left over from last year’s “Honey Do” list to keep both of us busy for months. I suggest that this would be a good time to review your financial Honey Do list and evaluate your progress. Just like projects around the house, your financial goals often seem to get pushed aside or forgotten because day-to-day activities or demands seem to get in the way. Let me pose a few common questions that many households should be asking:

• Will there be enough money to send the kids/grandkids to college?• Do I have a budget and am I able to stick to it?• Am I putting enough money into retirement savings to reach my goals?• Are my investments achieving my goals?• Have I taken advantage of the services of a competent financial advisor?

I can facilitate your financial spring cleaning. I know that there are no shortcuts to financial independence, and my team and I would like to earn your business. We are in a position to provide you with planning, teamwork, and timely execution to help you achieve your financial goals. Please call me at «CompanyPhone» to schedule an appointment! Sincerely,

Dear «Salutation»: It’s that time of year again!

When the sun begins to warm the ground in the spring, gardeners anxiously anticipate planting their favorite seeds or bulbs. Spring fever seems to stir garden dreams.

A tiny seed merely looks like a speck, but with proper nourishment of soil, water, and sun—it sprouts, grows, and then flourishes. Enough seeds taken care of this way and you have an entire garden to enjoy!

A little thought perhaps seems as only a dream, but upon writing down steps to reach that dream, it becomes a goal, next a quest, and then a reality! But it always starts with that first thought.

A small investment may seem like only pennies in a piggy bank, but with proper guidance, time, and more coins, your investment may grow into a flowering and flourishing financial garden!

As you ponder projects you’ll tackle this year in your yard, consider your financial garden. Does it need some new seeds, rich compost, or some tilling perhaps?

What better time than now to send you a packet of seeds for your garden and invite you to come in for a review of your account with us? Just give us a call at «CompanyPhone» and «ServiceAssistant» will set up a time that is good for you to come in.

We certainly appreciate our association with you, and hope you and your family will enjoy this new season of new beginnings, sunshine, and growth.

If you don’t know where you’re going, then how do you know when you get there?

Regardless of what the market does in the short term, your goals in life don’t go away. All the important goals in life need a well-developed plan. How well are you planning these days?

If an average person like me attempted to sail from, say, New York to Bermuda without any maps or navigational equipment, I most certainly would fail. Yet ships sailing from New York to Bermuda arrive 99.9%+ of the time.

Naturally, a ship captain uses all the right maps and equipment; before leaving port, he plots a detailed course; and he also recognizes that it’s impossible to just set a course and then go to sleep for the rest of the voyage. All along the way, the captain reviews his ship’s progress, understanding that the winds and currents may push his ship off course.

As the captain and crew of your own financial ship, «Salutation», let’s take some time together to review where you are along your journey and perhaps even adjust your goals. Please give me a call at «CompanyPhone», so that we can schedule a time to meet.

Once again it’s time to get together to Review Your Investment Plan. Issues that need to be discussed include:

1) Asset Allocation: Is your current asset mix appropriate for your risk tolerance and mar-ket conditions?

2) Are you interested in other types of investments for your portfolio?

3) Are your investments “on track” for retirement, education, or other goals?

4) Has your financial situation changed?

5) Are you paying more than your fair share of income taxes?

6) Are you maximizing your company sponsored retirement plans?

7) Are your insurance plans adequate for your situation?

I would like to review your goals and the path we are on to reach them, so please call our office at «CompanyPhone» to schedule an office meeting or phone appointment.

Dear «Salutation»: Life Insurance Review

Part of my job as your financial advisor is to help you manage the risk in your life.

So I have a question that will help me help you. Have you recently received a statement from an insurance company on an annuity or life insurance policy you own with them? Like other areas of your portfolio, we should review your life insurance policy periodically to make sure it is meeting your goals. These are just some of the events that may indicate a need to review your policy:

• Change in marital status• Change of occupation• Purchase or sale of a home

• Death of a parent or grandparent• Birth or adoption of a child or grandchild

Additionally, if you have owned your policy for over five years, you may want to make sure your earnings or rates on the policy are competitive and keeping up with inflation. I can help you to determine whether your policy is meeting your needs, and if there are any beneficiary changes.

Please call me at «CompanyPhone» to schedule an appointment to review these items. Be sure to bring your most recent financial statements to this meeting.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Dear «Salutation»:

We hope you and your family enjoyed the holiday season. Here we are again ending one year andbeginning the next. Life is always a continuation of closing and opening doors … may your doorsthat open in [Date of New Year] be good ones!

Inventory Time!It is always good to take a few moments for evaluation and this time of year seems especiallyappropriate for that. Here are a few financial things I would like to encourage you to takeinventory on. These are things that can be overlooked in the busyness of life, yet can greatlyaffect your estate.

WILLS & POWERS. If you don’t have them … get them. If you do have them, look themover to see if there are any changes that need to be made, such as executors, beneficiaries, orguardians.

INSURANCE. Do you have the proper amount of life insurance? The rule of thumb in theindustry is five to ten times your yearly income, but there are also many other factors that mayinfluence your amount such as the number and age of children, the amount of your mortgage, andyour spouse’s income. Other insurances that should be looked at are Long Term Care andDisability Insurance. While the risk of needing either of these is actually higher than the risk ofuntimely death, fewer people are covered by these insurances. You might be surprised at theaffordability of some of these products.

ROTH IRA. Would you like to save money in an account that you never have to pay incometaxes on any interest earned? Not everyone qualifies, but many do. Contributions for [Past Year]can be made up to April [Correct Date – Usually April 15th].

TRUST FULLY FUNDED. Trusts can be excellent estate planning tools but they are only asgood as they are “funded.” The goal is to have your estate outside the trust under the state limitfor the simple probate (approximately [$Amount ] in [State]). Again, the rule of thumb is thatany account that has a beneficiary does not need to be in the trust, as it will automatically go to

Gorilla Letters Library Service-Portfolio Review-New Year Inventory.oneThis letter is a good “start the New Year” letter. Send to cients and prospects to encourage a review of theirfinancial status. NOTE BEFORE USE: Read the text carefully. E.g., you’ll need to edit the limit amount foryour state shown in paragraph five. You also need to fill in the correct Date of New Year in paragraph one,and Year and Date in paragraph about a Roth IRA. Remove brackets also.

the beneficiaries without going through probate; but all other accounts should be in the trust.Any expensive titled items such as your house, boats, and cars should be reviewed to see if theyshould be titled in the name of the trust.

TRANSFER ON DEATH. Did you know that checking accounts, savings accounts, and manyinvestment accounts that do not have beneficiaries can be transferred on death to your loved onesand avoid probate also? Usually it is as simple as filling out a form.

Dear «Salutation»:

Review Overdue I have some important questions for you.

1) Why is it that when you transport something by car, it’s a “shipment,” but when you transportsomething by ship it’s “cargo”?

2) Why are there interstate highways in Hawaii? Or Alaska, for that matter?

3) Why do we park in our driveways—and drive on the parkways?

4) How did the guy driving the snowplow get to work that morning?

5) You know those little orange “black boxes” that survive virtually any airplane crash? Sowhy can’t they make whole planes out of the same material?

6) Why isn’t phonetic, of all words, spelled more like it sounds?

7) And: Why have we not gotten together more often? We’re overdue for a review!

(If you can answer the first 6 questions, #7 should be a snap.)

Dear «Salutation»:

First off, I hope you’re still enjoying any left-over birthday cake! After we spoke the other day, I startedthinking about the work we’ve done over the past year. I realized that it’s time for us to get together for afull portfolio review.

Portfolio reviews are one of the most important services I can provide for you. They give us the chanceto take a closer look at: How your investments have been performing. What progress we’ve made toward your financial goals. Any new goals you may have and how to reach them. Whether your tolerance for risk has changed, and whether your portfolio needs to be adjusted

accordingly. Other [financial/investment] [opportunities/solutions] you should be aware of.

The benefit to me is that this allows me to do my job better. The benefit to you is that you’ll knowexactly what needs to be done in order for you to reach your goals … and that you’re on track to do so.

So here’s what I want you to do, «Salutation». As soon you’ve finished setting up any new gadget yougot for your birthday, give my assistant «ServiceAssistant» a call at «CompanyPhone». She’ll find agood time for us to meet, whether on the phone or in person. We’ll review your portfolio, and you canspend the next 365 days feeling good about your finances. It’s the best birthday present I can give you!

I look forward to speaking with you soon.

Sincerely,

Dear «Salutation»:

Road Map to Success Please call my office at «CompanyPhone» to schedule a portfolio review. When people go on a trip, most people have a destination in mind. The route they take to get there might be a little less clear. But that’s why we have road maps. They let us know how to get from point A to point B. They let us know if we’ve gotten off track. But a road map doesn’t do any good if it’s not consulted frequently. Imagine you set off from home, and eventually you come to a fork in the road. How do you know which path to take if you don’t consult your map? If you flip a coin or trust to luck, chances are that in the end, you’ll find yourself in a different place than the one to which you originally intended to go. With investing, there’s no guide that’s guaranteed to get you to your destination. But what you can do is stop periodically to check your progress, to consult your plan to make sure that you’re sticking to it. That’s why I encourage all my clients to have annual portfolio reviews. With a portfolio review, we can examine your asset allocation, your risk tolerance, and your returns. We can decide whether we’re still on track to reach your destination. If necessary, we can adjust the plan, making the changes necessary to keep you on target. Investors who don’t do this will soon find themselves like the unwary traveler, who went south when he should have gone north. Some, in fact, might find themselves going right over a cliff. It is always a good time to check your map. Think of it like the beginning of the next stage of your journey. And since we didn’t get you in last year, a review is overdue. Let’s not delay. Sincerely,

«SignatoryLine1», «SignatoryCredentials1» «SignatoryLine2», «SignatoryCredentials2» «SignatoryTitle1» «SignatoryTitle2»

«SignatoryInitials»/«Typist» «EnclosureText»

P.S. If you know anyone else who could use a little direction, please don’t hesitate to give them my name. I’d be happy to help in any way I can.

Dear «Salutation»:

Excuses, Excuses … I’m giving you a brand new excuse. It’s called the It’s called the “I can’t, I have to go to a portfolio review with my financial advisor” excuse, and it works like a charm!

In life, we’re constantly putting off the things we want to do in favor of the things we don’t—whether it’s doing your homework, washing the dishes, or going to that wedding for the people you hardly even know. There’s only one defense against it: it’s called an excuse, and used properly, it’s the ultimate get-out-of-jail-free card.

Here’s a handy list of excuses for you to use in almost any situation: • “I can’t, I’m allergic.”• “Sorry, but I’m trying to quit.”• “I just ate.”• “I just did that yesterday.”• “I can’t, I have a thing.”

Have to go somewhere boring? Just say, “I can’t, I have to go to a portfolio review with my advisor.”

Invited to a party full of annoying people? Sorry, you have a portfolio review with your advisor.

See what I mean? By scheduling a portfolio review with your advisor, (that’s me), you can get out of plenty of uncomfortable situations. And best of all, it’s totally true! It is always a good time to review your holdings and determine a game plan for the months ahead. And since we didn’t get you in last year, a review is overdue.

So the next time you’re faced with something you’d rather not do, give me a call instead. We’ll be happy to get you out of it!

Dear «Salutation»:

Thank you for the trust and confidence you have placed in me. I enjoy our relationship and con-sider you a valued business friend. I have noticed that many of my clients own annuity policies—often with several companies. «CompanyName» has the ability to list many of these annuities on your monthly statement along with all of your other investments. This should help you consolidate your financial statements and allow both of us to monitor your financial picture more closely. Please call us at «CompanyPhone» to set up a review appointment. Please list on the enclosure the annuities you have, and bring that with you to this review. Then we will be able to let you know if we can include your particular policies on your statement. I will also help you obtain information on your annuities’ current value and interest-rate guarantees (if any), to enable you to stay on top of these investments. We look forward to hearing from you.
