Inventory Time!It is always good to take a few moments for evaluation and this time of year seems especiallyappropriate for that. Here are a few financial things I would like to encourage you to takeinventory on. These are things that can be overlooked in the busyness of life, yet can greatlyaffect your estate.

WILLS & POWERS. If you don’t have them … get them. If you do have them, look themover to see if there are any changes that need to be made, such as executors, beneficiaries, orguardians.

INSURANCE. Do you have the proper amount of life insurance? The rule of thumb in theindustry is five to ten times your yearly income, but there are also many other factors that mayinfluence your amount such as the number and age of children, the amount of your mortgage, andyour spouse’s income. Other insurances that should be looked at are Long Term Care andDisability Insurance. While the risk of needing either of these is actually higher than the risk ofuntimely death, fewer people are covered by these insurances. You might be surprised at theaffordability of some of these products.

ROTH IRA. Would you like to save money in an account that you never have to pay incometaxes on any interest earned? Not everyone qualifies, but many do. Contributions for [Past Year]can be made up to April [Correct Date – Usually April 15th].

TRUST FULLY FUNDED. Trusts can be excellent estate planning tools but they are only asgood as they are “funded.” The goal is to have your estate outside the trust under the state limitfor the simple probate (approximately [$Amount ] in [State]). The route they take to get there might be a little less clear. But that’s why we have road maps. They let us know how to get from point A to point B. They let us know if we’ve gotten off track. But a road map doesn’t do any good if it’s not consulted frequently. Imagine you set off from home, and eventually you come to a fork in the road. How do you know which path to take if you don’t consult your map? If you flip a coin or trust to luck, chances are that in the end, you’ll find yourself in a different place than the one to which you originally intended to go. With investing, there’s no guide that’s guaranteed to get you to your destination. But what you can do is stop periodically to check your progress, to consult your plan to make sure that you’re sticking to it. That’s why I encourage all my clients to have annual portfolio reviews. With a portfolio review, we can examine your asset allocation, your risk tolerance, and your returns. We can decide whether we’re still on track to reach your destination. If necessary, we can adjust the plan, making the changes necessary to keep you on target. Investors who don’t do this will soon find themselves like the unwary traveler, who went south when he should have gone north. Some, in fact, might find themselves going right over a cliff.
