Happy Holidays from PPS
We will dismiss at 1:30 p.m. on
Friday, December 18th for the
Christmas holidays.
Winter holidays (Dec. 21—Jan. 4)
School resumes January 5
THE SCRIP PROGRAM IS HERE! Parents, faculty, and friends can purchase gift cards from the PPS PTSA which are issued by national and local
retailers where families already shop. SCRIP can be used to purchase food, clothing, and other everyday essentials. With each gift card used, revenue is earned for PPS PTSA. The reason for the effectiveness of
SCRIP is simple: families produce revenue by making purchases they would make anyway. Groceries, clothing, toys, gifts, even gasoline can be purchased with SCRIP, and without spending an additional penny help raise
money to enhance the education at PPS. More information will be available soon. Make your list of gift cards now, and help the PPS PTSA.

GRADE LEVEL NEWS
Sixth grade
Science: Science Project Due Dates: December 9: Final Project Due.
Please stay up-to-date on your child's science project. Check his/her binder for the project information hand-out and specific instructions. Show boards and labels can be purchased during school from the Science De-partment. Your child should be finishing up with their experimenting. It is important that students do not wait until the last minute to complete projects.
Second Quarter Test Dates: Test 3: December 10
Social Studies: The 6th graders are studying the Spanish-American War, World War I and the Jazz Age this quarter.
Language Arts: Classes have finished the children’s book project. The kits have been mailed to the publisher, and the books are expected to arrive in time for Christmas. We are studying verb tenses in grammar, and we have begun to read a short story about Eleanor Roosevelt. It ties nicely with our class novel, Out of the Dust. The final two novels tests will be given on December 3rd and 10th.
Eighth grade
Science: Science projects are due on Monday, December 7 by 8:00 a.m.
Math: The Algebra I classes are graphing lines using the slope, y-intercept method ad point, slope method. They will also be finishing their Oreo Project.
Seventh grade
Math: Pre-Algebra students have been working on area, surface area and volume. To reinforce and to provide an opportunity for practical applications of those skills, they are completing a “room or box project” in which they figure out the area of the floors, walls and ceiling of the room (box). They will then write a descriptive paragraph describing how they will decorate the room. After they have actually decorated the room (box) each student will determine how much was spent on the floor, ceiling and walls of the room. The culminating activity will be a poster which will have the rest of their room (box) decorated and attached to the poster with all the pertinent information about the room attached as well. All of the math will be done at school with their teacher’s assistance. However, the students will decorate the box and complete the posters at home. These projects are due on Dec. 10.
December 7.—Showboards are due for 7th and 8th graders by 8:00 a.m. If students are not pre-sent Monday, Dec 7th, they need to return Dec. 8th with a doctor’s excuse. If they know prior to Dec. 7th that they will be absent, then the project is due before Dec. 7th. It is a 300 point grade
that counts as a 60% test grade.
December 9—Showboards are due for 6th graders.

CHORUS AND DRAMA PERFORMANCES
Tropical Storm Ida kept us from having our annual Phillips Prep
School Veterans Day recognition programs on Tuesday, Novem-
ber 10, BUT we have rescheduled the program to Pearl Harbor
Day, Monday, December 7. The programs will be the same times
and schedule as before, with the same basic format and partici-
pants for both assemblies. The program for 6th graders will be
from 7:50—8:20 a.m. The program for 7th and 8th graders will
be from 8:35—9:05 a.m. All PPS students are encouraged to in-
vite family members and friends who serve or have served in the
military to join us so that we can show our appreciation for what they have done for our country.
Speech students will present readings, the band will play rous-
ing patriotic selections, and the chorus will sing a medley of
songs representing each branch of the U.S. Armed Services.
In addition, chorus members will also present Stars and Stripes, a combination of two patriotic favorites: “You’re a
Grand Old Flag” and “Stars and Stripes Forever,” and Why We Sing, an inspirational song about hope, peace and love.
Our chorus’s winter holiday concert will be at Davidson High
School on Tuesday night, December 8th at 7:00 p.m. in the
auditorium. We will join in concert with Davidson’s choruses
for an hour filled with beautiful singing, appropriate for the
holiday season. All family and friends are invited and encouraged to attend. The chorus will
repeat its program for students and faculty at PPS during the school day on Tuesday, December
15 at 1:45 p.m.
Drama Players are working on an original “Rumplestiltskin Saga” to be performed at PPS in
late January or early February. They hope also to present this production for visiting fifth
graders from area schools who come to tour PPS as prospective students. In addition, they plan
to take this show “on the road” to one or more nearby elementary schools. Late in second se-
mester, they will also present a program of comedic skits, “Live from Mobile . . “
Please remember that checks submitted for any payment at Phillips
Preparatory School must have a working telephone number and the
drivers license number of one or both parents/guardians.

The Box Tops for Education program is very successful
at PPS! To participate in the program, simply save box
tops from participating products. Students will re-
ceive collection sheets during homeroom for exciting
bonus opportunities throughout the year. For more
information, see Dr. Kennedy.
Every year BILLIONS of drink pouches end up in
dumpsters and landfills across America. TerraCy-
cle, Capri Sun and Kool-Aid Jammers are working
together. The TerraCycle Drink Pouch Brigade™
program allows our school to collect drink pouches
and they will donate $.02 for each one we send
them. You can send these flattened and empty
pouches to Mrs. Burch.
Help PPS earn 5% in credit to use towards free
supplies. If you shop at Office Depot for
school supplies, be sure to provide our schools’
identification number each time you make a
purchase. Office Depot will award us 5% of
the qualifying purchases. Our school identifi-
cation number is: 70001655.

CARS AND SCHOOL BUSES –
AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN
We continue to have problems with cars coming to the front of the school in the morning while buses are unloading and during the time that the buses start arriving for pick-up in the afternoon. No cars should try to drop-off or park in the front of the school when school buses are arriving. The following information is from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the State Highway Safety Program. “Guideline 17 requires the State of Alabama to develop plans for minimizing highway hazards to school bus occupants in many ways including, but not limited to: Establishing restricted loading and unloading areas for buses at or near schools.”
This guideline is from the Uniform Guidelines for State Highway Safety Programs.
7. Local School officials should establish passenger vehicle loading and unloading points at schools that are separate from the school bus loading zones.
Please follow the rules and all students will be safer.
invites you to participate in our
8th Grade Parent Night!
We are getting our 8th graders ready for high school! It is too early to
pre-register for high school, but it is not too early for our students and
parents to learn about specific programs available at the various high
schools.
We would love to have you come and hear from some of the high school rep-
resentatives.
We hope that you are able to come. The program is scheduled to be held in
the Phillips Preparatory Gym,
Tuesday, January 12, 2010, from 6:00 p.m. to approximately 7:30 p.m.
We hope to see you there !
