From the Principal
It has been a whirlwind start to Term 2 with camps, school events, excursions and leadership opportunities. Over the next two weeks we have a student organised and run MOVIE NIGHT, NAPLAN for our Grade 3, 5, 7, & 9s and visiting experts to assist with our improvement of learning and teaching. Each Monday the calendar is posted on Facebook to keep our community up-to-date with our events and extra-curricular happenings. Yesterday Mr Harris took our Grade 3 – 6 students into the Sunraysia South Cross Country as they had all qualified. Mr Harris reported that they participated to the very best of their ability and proudly represented our school, congratulations to all the four of them. Special congratulations go to Gus who placed 6th, Ebony who also placed 6th and Max who placed 8th and have qualified for the next level of competition in St Arnaud. Well done to Abby on achieving 34th place in her first inter-school competition.
The survey is conducted in term 2 with students from Years 4 to 12 attending Victorian government schools. The survey captures students’ attitudes and experiences at school and is aligned with the Department’s Framework for Improving Student Outcomes (FISO). The survey measures are based on the best available evidence about what influences student outcomes. Our students will participate in this survey over the next coming weeks.
Just a reminder that there have been several diagnosed cases of Influenza (the flu) throughout the school community, attached is a fact sheet for your information. We are also in the process of contacting a company to provide the vaccine - “flu shot” - to staff members, students and the wider community here at school. More information will be sent home at a later date.
Last night we had our second school council meeting for 2019 and it has been decided that students are able to wear black shorts (appropriate length) or black pants (not leggings) on school days that are not special events. Therefore on excursion days, photo days or when representing the school students MUST be in navy or grey shorts or pants or the school dress/skirt with the school logo t-shirt or jumper. The school uniform policy will be updated and ratified at the next school council meeting then it will be placed on the Google Drive with all the other policies. You can get to the school Google Drive via the school website.

NAPLAN INFORMATION
Why do students do NAPLAN tests?
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assesses literacy and nu-meracy skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in reading, writing, language conven-tions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.
The tests provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are per-forming at the time of the tests. NAPLAN tests are just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process; they do not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student per-formance.
NAPLAN tests also provide schools, education authorities and governments with information about how education programs are working and whether young Australians are meeting im-portant educational outcomes in literacy and numeracy.
How are NAPLAN test results used?
Students and parents may use individual results to discuss progress with teachers. Teachers use results to help them better identify students who require greater challenges or additional support. Schools use results to identify strengths and weaknesses in teaching programs and to set goals in literacy and numeracy. School systems use results to review programs and support offered to schools.
Scholastic Book club. Reading Gives You Superpowers!
The current issue of Book Club has been sent home. If you would like to place an order,
order forms and money can be left at the school office, by Monday 13th May. Alternatively,
orders can be submitted online – see the brochure for details.
Issue 3 has a promotional offer on the purchase of Dav Pilkey books purchased through book
club for any Dav Pilkey fans. There are also plenty of other great books to choose from!
Numerous studies have shown that a child who reads for 10 minutes a day is exposed to
more than 600,000 words in one year! Frequent reading has numerous benefits, both on an
educational and emotional scale. Just 10 minutes of reading a day will change your child’s
life!
As this month also promotes “Read More In May”, it is a
great time to encourage your child to read at home.
And remember – Reading Gives You Superpowers!

Millewa Pre-School
What’s Happening
This Term at the Millewa Pre-School we are exploring science, natural history and dinosaurs through our dramatic play area and a range of experience and experiments. It’s always interesting to see them engage with challenging materials outside of what they know so we look forward to in depth conversations around a variety of topics.
This week at the Millewa Pre-School we had our first playgroup session. Run between 2pm and 3pm on Tuesday afternoon we invited members of the wider community with children aged between birth and three to join us for a session focused on social skills and interactions with other children and adults. We had a fantastic turn out with five children joining us along with a parent each. We shared in a range of activities including story time, play dough, cutting and pasting to name a few. We hope to be able to offer these sessions to our community once a month.
If you have any questions regarding any kindergarten matters please don’t hesitate to contact me on either [email protected], 5028 1251 (M, W, Th or F) or 5028 1293 (Tu).
