Our rating system provides a useful, general gauge of a hike’s difficulty. It factors in distance and elevation gain and is intended to help you choose hikes that you will find most enjoyable.

R0-R10 These are more walks than hikes. They’re usually close to home, the trails are flat, and distances are generally short. An after-din-ner walk around the block would be rated R1 or R2. Our Wednesday Night Walks are R5.

R10-R20 Most of these hikes will be in the lower mountains and foothills. Distances will be about 5-8 miles, with vertical ranging from 500-1000 feet...not easy if you’re new to hiking! Trails will be dirt and rock. As long as you’re in moderately good shape, you should be able to enjoy the outing.

R20-R30 Hikes in the low end of this range will be too hard and overly stressful for many new members. Plan on an all-day trip, with at least 4 hours of continuous hiking in rugged and steep terrain. At a minimum, be sure to pack two quarts of water, lunch, a snack, and rain gear.

R30-R40 These are strenuous hikes. They will usually be 10+ miles, with climbs of 2000+ feet. They’re appropriate only for those who have done a number of lower rated hikes.

R40+ These hikes are usually 12 or more miles with 3000 feet or more of elevation gain. They’re appropriate only for fit, experienced hikers. Check with hike leader about the trip if you are wanting to do this trip for the first time.

Outings Protocol➤ Inform the outing leader you are

going to attend. Arrive early for the outing.

➤ If you carpool, reimburse your driver for driving costs. A suggested amount is $4.00 for each hour of driving.

➤ Always take snacks, lunch, water and rain gear.

➤ Bring extra clothes to change into after the outing.

➤ To keep vehicles clean and the air fresh, always carry something to hold muddy boots and sweaty clothes for the ride back from a hike.

➤ Your participation is at your own risk.

May 5-7 Merchant’s Millpond State ParkFriday-Sunday Canoe/Kayak/Camping

Join us for a Friday-Sunday canoe/kayak/camping trip to Merchants Millpond, NC’s truly unique state park. The club has enjoyed this outing for years. Everyone needs to notch this trip. On Saturday we will paddle the 760-acre lake which has ancient moss draped cypress trees and areas totally covered in sunburst water lilies. We hope to be able to paddle upstream and view a 1000+ year old cypress tree; a nature religious moment. Sunday morning we will paddle Bennett’s Creek, a black water creek flowing to the Chowan River. Yes, we hope to see some water snakes and a few resident alligators in comfortable non-intimidating

encounters. The bothersome bugs should not have emerged; however, to see a tick would not be unexpected. We will leave Friday morning for the 4½ hour drive to the NE corner of NC near Gatesville and then canoe/kayak a mile to a beautiful hardwood island campsite. First time boaters and campers are welcome. Boats can be arranged. Call me for more details. See the park’s website at www.ncparks.gov.

May 6 Indian Creek TrailSaturday Hanging Rock SP

We’ll take in Hidden Falls and Window Falls, then enjoy lunch near the Visitors’ Center before descending to the cars. Waterproof footgear and poles or a walking stick will facilitate the many creek crossings. 7 miles, R-23. Optional pub stop at the Green Heron before heading home. Contact me for details. Carpooling from WS or GSO may be possible.

across multiple 6000 ft peaks. In addition to Mt Mitchell, we will cross Mt Craig, Big Tom, Balsam Cone, Cattail Peak, Potato Hill and Winterstar. The trail north of Winterstar may not be well maintained and the hiker should expect overgrowth in some sections. This is a very difficult hike with a lot of elevation gain, rocky terrain and is for strong experienced hikers only. Weather is extremely variable at this altitude, so bring rain gear and plenty of water. Expect to leave early, hike nine to ten hours, and return late. Join us for this multi-faceted outing. The first leg of our day will begin at Elk Knob State Park where we will hike a total of 4 miles and 900 feet in elevation gain to reach the summit of Elk Knob where we will enjoy expansive views of the surrounding mountains and possibly of peaks as distant as Moore's Knob at Hanging Rock Park and Mount Mitchell in the Black Mountains. Following lunch, we will embark on the final segments of our day. First we will hike partially uphill one mile along the MST in the northerly direction of the parkway to Mount Jefferson View overlook, where the vista includes Elk Knob (our morning’s conquest) as well as Whitetop, Roan, and Grandfather Mountains. Then we will turn back south and hike 5 miles with 900 feet of gain in elevation to return to Jeffress Park and to the vehicles left there earlier in the day. Because of the relatively

small size of Park Vista Restaurant, this hike is limited to 15 participants. Please call or email either Sandy or Lora by Thursday evening to reserve your spot. 10 miles [R-33]

May 20 Mt. Rogers AreaSaturday Virginia Highlands HT,

Cabin Ridge, AT North

I invite you to join me for a gorgeously varied hike in the Mt Rogers area, just outside the northwest boundary of Grayson Highlands State Park in Virginia. The route is perfect for this time of year, when all is green and fresh, and the rhododendron are swollen with big fat buds ready to flower. We will start from the Massie Gap area at Grayson, hiking south on the AT, veer west on the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail, which will take us through long stretches of rhododendron groves, and continue on the Cabin Ridge Trail before coming out to open meadows with sweeping vistas of our favorite peaks. After pausing for lunch, we will start walking northbound on the AT, alternating between wooded areas and open spaces affording majestic views of the surrounding ranges. We will return to base by walking around Wilburn Ridge on the Crest and Rhododendron Trails, and the AT again. The area seems to be a favorite of the famous Grayson ponies, who love to pose for gawking hikers and avid photographers. Although this is a moderate hike in terms of distance and elevation gain, it offers some modest terrain challenges: more than 80% of the route is very rocky and most of the time muddy, with low areas of standing water and mini creek crossings. If you like to hike with poles, this is definitely a hike where you will need them. 10 miles, +/- 1800 ft. [R-32]. Please email or call if you plan to join us.
