Trip report to Black Springs, Oberon By Fred Krebs.
Few club members ventured out to Oberon this weekend. The campsite at Black
Springs was certainly not crowded. Rod arrived a couple of day before. Not long
after I arrived Wally and Ruth then
Tristan arrived. Oberon is a big place,
It’s good to have a plan before- hand
what you want to do. You can look for
gemstones like Sapphires and Zircons.
Sapphire Bend is a good place to start.
Porters retreat as well. Gold has been
panned at Porters as well. I was keen to
go exploring
and detecting. I had a couple of places in mind. There
was a little bit of rain Friday night and I was concerned
about the ability of some vehicles to safely traverse some
of the roads to the places I was thinking of. That’s why it is
prudent to use vehicles designed for off- road travel when
you go off the bitumen and into the bush-or forest as is
usually the case around Oberon. Especially with 4WD and
good ground clearance. I decided to check out the old
workings at the Dam. I hadn’t been there for a while and
Oberon council have cleaned it all up and have made a
very nice camp ground. There are BBQ facilities and
Toilets near the Boat ramp. Wally and Ruth and I had
lunch there as well as a swing of the detector around
some of the still visible workings. We found targets! But not
gold. Ah well. Nice spot though. Sunday we all decided
to look for Sapphire’s. As we all had our state forest Permits, we ventured out to a
prospective spot. There was evidence of very serious digging. There was lots of
water too! This was very helpful for us to sieve our wash in the water. Rod set up his
Willaby and the well-known local Tex dropped by for a visit or two, or three! With
great encouragement and
amazing stories from Tex we dug
and Sieved and strained our
eyes! I didn’t do well at all
however. Rod and Tristan found
some nice sapphires.

How to calculate weight of gold in quartz without crushing it.
A quick test,
Dry weight and submerged(wet) weight. Using grams.
Specimen is 112.68 grams Dry x 1.9 =214.092
74.51 grams wet x 3.1=231.167
231.167-214.092 = 17.075 grams of gold in the specimen.
A more accurate test
112.68(Dry)-74.51(Wet)=38.17
112.68 divided by
38.17=2.9520565889(The specific
gravity of the whole specimen)
2.9520565889-2.63(average specific gravity of
quartz)=0.3220565889
0.3220565889 x 38.17=12.2929
12.2929 divided by 25.97(The Constant) = 0.4733500193(In
Ounces)
0.4733500193 x 31.103(grams in 1 ounce)=14.72 grams of gold
in the specimen.
112.68 gram gold and quartz specimen
11
Cut holes in a bucket to set up scales to weigh specimens in the air and submerged.
Cleaning your specimens. If you just want to brighten up the specimen, Oxalic acid seems to work well. If you spill some on you, remove affected clothing immediately, and rinse affected area with water for at least 15 minutes. Avoid inhaling the vapour. If the acid gets into your eyes rinse continually for at least 15 minutes until medical help arrives. Placing your specimen in an ultrasonic cleaner with a little bit of “Windex” can clean the dirt away without any risk of abrasions. I have met people who use hydrofluoric acid. Even when it is a weak solution, you must take precautions. Safety gear, safe work environment and a plan if something goes wrong. For Hydrofluoric acid you can order Calcium Gluconate from the chemist. If you spill that acid onto you. Immediately rinse with water for at least 15 minutes. Apply the gel and massage into the affected area to neutralize the acid. Seek medical attention immediately.
