FADE IN:

EXT. RUE DE LA PAIX, PARIS - DAY- AUGUST 1944

Under a grey sky, we see the curving street strewn with the bodies of a man and woman and a burning sedan with chevrons on its grill and the letters “FFL” scrawled on the door.

The SOUND OF SMALL ARMS FIRE is PUNCTUATED BY THE HIGH SPEED METALLIC THUMPS OF A MG-42 MACHINE GUN.

Suddenly, three American jeeps careen around an intersection, and SCREECH TO A HALT before the Ritz Hotel.

Out of the first jeep jumps HEMINGWAY, a burly and bandoliered man arrayed in a mix of army issue and big-game hunting dress. His belt buckle proclaims, ¨Gott mit Uns.¨

HEMINGWAYOK boys our objective is straight through the lobby and then eyes left...and for Christ´s sake, don't fire unless you see a Swastika or hear German.

A GROUP OF RAG-TAG SOLDIERS dressed like Hemingway barrel out of the jeeps and into the hotel´s doors.

CUT TO:

INT. RITZ HOTEL - CONTINUOUS

Hemingway strides into the hotel´s foyer, glances about, and grabs a phone from the concierge's desk.

HEMINGWAY(In French with subtitles)

Reception! Yeah, we need a bartender in the back bar. (Pause) Who am I? It´s Ernie you old clown. I´m back!

CUT TO:

INT. HOTEL BAR - MOMENTS LATER

With Hemingway at their center, the group crowds around the bar, as PIERRE, THE HOTEL BARTENDER, busily polishes some glasses.

THREE CIVILIANS break into room and rush to Hemingway. One man, dressed in a cutaway coat embraces Hemingway with tears in his eyes.

CIVILIAN IN CUTAWAY COAT(French with Subtitles)

Monsieur Hemingway!? Welcome, welcome. We have your trunk in the third floor storage. It has been waiting for you for four years...

The Civilian in the Cutaway CHOKES on his tears. Hemingway nods his approval.

HEMINGWAYGood. I could use a clean shirt.

Pierre places glasses on the bar as Hemingway produces two army canteens.

HEMINGWAYHere we are...one gin, one vermouth...won´t work for my usual 16 to 1 ratio, but it's a start. Pierre, please tell me you have some gin.

PIERREOnly the Dutch variety. The Germans drank all of the English product.

HEMINGWAYYet another atrocity on the conscience of the Reich...all right, Martinis for everybody. Guess the Dutch stuff will do, easy on the Vermouth.

Hemingway turns to the Civilian in the Cutaway with purpose.

HEMINGWAYWhat happened with Harry´s?

CIVILIAN IN CUTAWAY COATIt was still open last week, sir.

A UNIFORM from Hemingway´s band sits down at the bar´s piano. He BANGS OUT A ROUSING FRENCH DRINKING SONG. Pierre begins to pass around the drinks, and everyone SINGS ALONG.

After the song, Hemingway raises his glass.

HEMINGWAYTo our lost brothers in arms, and to us...may we be as joyful forever as we are today.

Hemingway then moves around the room patting backs and shaking hands. Then finishing his drink, he sets his glass on the bar and motions to three members of his group to follow.

CUT TO:

EXT. RUE DE LA PAIX - MOMENTS LATER

Hemingway climbs behind the wheel of one of the jeeps. With the three men he navigates the littered street. Finally, he reaches Rue Daunou.

CUT TO:

EXT. RUE DANOU - CONTINUOUS

Hemingway stops the jeep in front of a storefront. A sign proclaims ¨Harry´s.¨ Hemingway gets out of the jeep and looks up at the sign.

HEMINGWAYJust ¨Harry´s?¨ What? Didn't the Krauts like ¨Harry´s New York Bar?¨ Well, what the hell, a lot of New Yorkers didn't care so much for the Krauts either.

Hemingway pulls around his carbine and begins to take a swing at the window, when he suddenly stops, reaches for his wallet, and pulls out a key.

HEMINGWAYHarry MacElhone himself gave me this key last May in London.

He gives the key a try, and the door CLICKS open.

HEMINGWAYDamn thing works.

INT. HARRY´S BAR - MOMENTS LATER

As the group mills about the bar, Hemingway looks at the glass cabinet of whiskey bottles on the wall. Atop the bar sits the Star Red Hot hot dog machine.

Pacing to the back of the bar, he stares with surprise at the wall of American college pennants.

HEMINGWAYNot a God-damned thing has changed...Krauts must have thought they were running a museum.

After checking the bar, Hemingway pulls out a flashlight and motions to his group to follow him.

They slowly file down a spiral staircase.

CUT TO:

INT. CELLAR CABARET AT HARRY´S - CONTINUOUS

Hemingway strides a few paces over a rise in the floor and glances around at the cabaret.

HEMINGWAYDamn...the piano is gone...Gershwin´s piano. How the hell did they get it out of here.

FADE TO:

INT. HARRY´S BAR - LATER

Hemingway is behind the bar opening bottles and placing glasses on top of the bar. A SOLDIER IN A TANKER JACKET points to a photo on the wall of the bar.

SOLDIER IN TANKER JACKETChrist Ernie...is that you? What the hell are you doing on the wall of a Kraut Bar?

There is a photo of Hemingway on the wall. He is dressed in hunting tweeds and carrying a shotgun.

It is well before the war. The street in front of Harry´s is packed with automobiles inching their way along down the Rue Danou. We hear a Parisian TAXI KLAXON.

INT. HARRY´S BAR - CONTINUOUS

A younger Hemingway is leaning over the bar talking to HARRY MACELHONE, the dark and burly Scottish owner of the bar.

HEMINGWAYHey Harry, have you seen anything of Fitzgerald or Zelda today? I hauled him back to the Ritz last night like a sack of potatoes.

HARRYNo Ernie, if they show up, it won´t be before five bells...they both need their beauty sleep.

HEMINGWAYBeauty sleep! Neither one has hit a key in months. Probably the wettest dry spell in history...and Zelda only writes when she gets pissed off at Scott. What they both need is a swift kick in the ass.

HARRYNow Ernie you're not exactly a dynamo these days...ah, here comes MR. GERSHWIN, maybe he saw the lovely couple at the Ritz.

GERSHWINNope...bit early for those two...Harry, I need to use the piano...got an idea last night...a dream sent from Heaven. I´m six months behind on my “American in Paris” project, and my brother keeps sending me wires...sez Paris is a damned playpen...the noive.

EXT. THE ROAD TO BORDEAUX - LATER

The road to Bordeaux is crammed with cars, trucks, and carts, some driven by horse and some pulled by refugees.

The scene is one of stop and start, and the face of hopelessness is everywhere.

Harry’s Topolino is behind an old, beat up truck. As they lumber over the Loire River bridge the Topolino breaks down.

Harry moves around to the front of the truck and nods to the TRUCK DRIVER.

HARRYMy car has broken down but I have petrol...is there any way we can help each other?

TRUCK DRIVERDon’t have any room for you but I’ll take the fuel and you can hitch your car up to my truck.

Harry begins to rope the frame of the Topolino to the back of the truck.

They drive on.

A few moments pass and the truck stops. The Topolino bangs into the back of the truck.

The truck stops again, and Harry slams on the brakes to no effect as again the Topolino rams into the truck. Apparently, the brakes have failed completely.

The town is swarming with hordes of people, ill-dressed, dirty, and frightened. They line up at the various Channel Boats ticket offices.

HARRYAndy, here are enough francs for four tickets...when you have bought them, hide them in your shirt and stay here. I’m off to find your mother and sister.

The others LAUGH at the American slang. Beck LAUGHS HEARTILY, as he finishes the song.

YOUNG KREIGSMARINE OFFICERHey, Colonel, how about some Boogie Woogie?

Beck BREAKS INTO THE PINETOP SMITH CLASSIC “BOOGIE WOOGIE.”

The Kreigsmarine officer BEATS the top of the piano in cadence.

WOLF STREICHER, a uniformed gestapo officer, appears before the piano and smacks the top of the piano with his riding crop sharply giving out a loud WHACK. The room immediately becomes SILENT.

STREICHERMust we be assaulted with this negroid offal?

BECKYou want offal...we have offal.

YOUNG WEHRMACHT OFFICERWhen you were leaving Wisconsin, I was starting at Brown.

YOUNG KREIGSMARINE OFFICERYale here...graduated four years ago. I truly enjoyed living in America...good people.

BECKPlaying their music in the new Reich may be less than stylish. And, if it is up to our Gestapo friend, it may be criminal some day. Did you know that George Gershwin wrote his American in Paris on that very piano? Right here in this basement, 1927-1928. He was living in the Ritz Hotel and had a piano in his suite, but the other guests complained about his composing. So he made a deal with the owner here to use this piano in the mornings when the bar was closed.

YOUNG KREIGSMARINE OFFICERAny Gershwin fan would look upon that piano as something almost sacred...especially now that he is dead these three years...

BECKYou may be right, my friend.

INT. OFFICE IN THE BRITISH EMBASSY, LONDON - DAY

Seated around a table are RAF and ARMY AIR CORPS OFFICERS. Among them sits the American MAJOR STAN NOVAK. In front stands a BRITISH SCIENTIST before a large chart.

BRITISH SCIENTISTGentleman, the Jerries developed a rocket thrust fighter only two years ago, designated the Heinkel 176. The chaps in Berlin weren't too interested and so it has been sitting in their Air Museum ever since.

The British Scientist flips over a page of his chart and raises his pointer.

BRITISH SCIENTISTHowever, taking the rocket a step down we have jet propulsion whereas using a kerosene derivative which is ignited within a cone. The thrust is maintained, the fuel consumption is much closer to piston-driven aircraft, and the whole business is a damned sight safer. Speeds of 550 miles per hour are quite possible, as opposed to four hundred miles per hour for one of our Spitfires. The Germans have been working on this solution to a faster climbing ship for some time and Messerschmitt is close to testing a plane that could be harnessed to what we could call a jet engine. They will test the plane this summer to evaluate the stress factor on the air frame. The jet-engine, designated BMW-003, is being developed right now at the Bayerische Motoren Werke somewhere in the Harz Mountains, or wherever. We are looking at jet propulsion ourselves, of course, but to find out how far Jerry has got would be a nice spoon of jam.

NOVAKHey! I thought Buck Rogers was on our side.

BRITISH SCIENTISTWell, Major, I don't know who your Mr. Rogers is but you are going to be billeted in Occupied Paris where we can't go...certainly not in uniform. We are at war with Jerry; you're not. You can mix it up a bit with the Germans, after all, that's what a military attache is supposed to do. And we also know, Major, that you were an observer with Doctor Goddard’s rocket experiments in New Mexico. And so, keep your ears open and stop at Harry´s New York Bar on Danou. Harry the owner had to leave Paris, wrong colored passport and all that. He can be now found in the Rivoli Bar in the Ritz Hotel here in London. He runs the place from behind the bar. LEUTNANT BAYREUTERSir. We have a tap on his telephone at his flat but the Embassy is very difficult.

BECKWell, Leutnant, do what you can do and report on who he is in contact with, and find out who they are. Interesting background...mechanical engineering at Wisconsin, aeronautical engineering at Purdue. Learned to fly when he was sixteen, learned again in the Army Air Corps...fluent in German...adequate French...and look at this! Worked with Robert Goddard in New Mexico in 1938! .... Young for a Major.

Beck swings around in his chair and looks out the window overlooking the garden.

NOVAKHold it Harry, this is not our mission, running a bar via carrier pigeon with me doing the flight time.

HARRYOur mission?

NOVAKYes, Harry our mission is the bloody war. I’m the American air attache’ in Paris and the jackboots are finding your saloon to their liking. My mission, and now yours, is to seek out information that could be valuable to the war effort. Consider your bar in Paris a listening post. It has been enlisted for the duration.

HARRYWhat do you need, Major?

NOVAKWell, you know the building...is there any place in the bar where I could I could hide something in case I need to?

HARRYI had a safe in the office but I assume you need a little nook or cranny to stash some papers or whatever.

NOVAKSomething like that...

HARRYWell, give me a think....The Piano!

She squints as the bright sun is in her eyes. She makes out a uniform and looks frightened. Suddenly, she hears:

NOVAKHi Frauk...

FRAUKIEMein Gott...Stan

The both stand staring at each other. Novak is in the uniform of full Colonel-USAAF. Fraukie looks dowdy, thin and tired in a cheap house dress.

Then Novak walks toward Fraukie and they embrace. They hold each other for a long, long time. Then Fraukie looks up and they kiss.

FRAUKIEPlease, come inside...here you are still the enemy...the neighbors will not understand.

NOVAKI have some food in my jeep.

Fraukie nods and Novak goes out to jeep and picks up a cardboard box and returns to the house and enters. He places the box on a table. He takes out of the box a bottle of Jim Beam bourbon and puts it on the table.

NOVAKThere are canned goods and other stuff in the box. Are you here alone?

FRAUKIEFather is sitting in the yard, and Otto is working somewhere.

NOVAKI saw Otto.

Novak sits down in a chair and looks down at the floor and then up at Fraukie. He shakes his head with a lopsided, sardonic grin on his face.

NOVAKSo you put the passport and the money in the piano...

FRAUKIE(shaking her head)

Ja...

FRAUKIELast year when they attempted to kill Hitler...Hannalore told me.

NOVAKHannalore? And where’s she?

FRAUKIEDead.

NOVAKAnd how are you, Frauk? You’re still beautiful...a bit war worn, but aren’t we all...Can we see each other tonight?

FRAUKIEThat is verboten...your anti-fraternization laws.

NOVAKOh yea...those...Tell you what. Go to the Bamberg Hotel about eight tonight and ask for Herr Novak.

Fraukie looks up at the eagles on Novak’s shoulders and smiles.

FRAUKIEI see you made colonel, Herr Novak...I will be there...Can you help Otto..he is a bit bitter.

NOVAKYea, the fortunes of war...we will do something for Otto....eight o’clock, then?

They embrace again.

FADE OUT. FADE IN:

INT. BAMBERG HOTEL ROOM - EVENING

We see Novak and Fraukie in bed sleeping. From outside we HEAR PIANO MUSIC. The song is Gershwin’s “Lady be Good.” We see Novak wake up and listen intently. He then shakes his head and lies back down on the pillow.

INT./EXT. A STREET IN BAMBERG - CONTINUOUS

We follow the music out the window and down the fire escape to the street. We go up the street about a half a block and we see a door to a cellar caberet. The door opens as we approach the music. We see a piano and a worn and shiny tuxedo and then the scarred face of Beck who is sporting an eye patch and a cigar. His hair is snow white.

FADE OUT. FADE IN:

INT. HARRY´S BAR - EVENING

Harry and Hemingway are talking at the end of the bar and through the window we see a beautiful 1939 Mercedes 230 Roadster. The street light gives it a showroom sparkle. Charlie is next to them mixing a drink. Hemingway munches on a hot dog.

HEMINGWAYHarry, what ever happened to your old piano, the new one just doesn’t sound the same...

HARRYAsk Charlie...he was there.

CHARLESThe Germans just took it. They took it apart, wrapped up the parts in army blankets and put them on a truck ...they just took it.

HARRYDamned Huns.

HEMINGWAYMust be a story there somewhere.

Charlie reaches into his pocket and pulls out a car key with a Mercedes badge attached, looks out the window at the Mercedes and quietly smiles. He flips the key fob in the air and then puts it back into his pocket.

FIN

FADE TO BLACK.
