Also Sprach Zarathustra "2001"
Note: I would just like to clear up some confusion
in the discusion part of this song. The organ actually
sounds better if you do something like this:
Bb A G E G: Bb A G F G
and as far as the chords in the organ,
just let the guitar to the main part with the organ playing
what I have writen above. And end
on the chord specified by this tab.
I was looking at the tab for Also Sprach Zarathustra "2001". I
just wanted to point out that the funky version that phish plays is really
from Eumir Deodato and is recorded on the Sony label. If you want to hear
that version, check out the great movie "Being There" with Peter
Sellers. It's a clean, studio version with a very 70's feel to it.
Jam starts in Cmin7
Bass/Organ line:

A--------10--7--10--------10--8--10--6>7---

Trey does his little noodling over it:
E--8---8---
B-11--11---
G--8---8---
D-10---8---
A-----10---
E------8---
Then this riff builds up the jam (have whoever's not playing lead hit the chords/
notes listed above the tab)

Architect
This is a I, IV, V song in the key of E.
Main riff: E
e---------12----------x-x-x--------14-12---
B---------12---xxx----x-x-x---xx---14-12---
G---------12---xxx----6/7-7---xx---14-12---
D--------------xxx----4/5-5---xx-----------
A---------------------x-x-x----------------
E--/12*---------------x-x-x-----------------
*Play first time through only, substitute with some muting the other times.
| E | E | E | E |
| A | A | E | E |
| B | A | E | E |
This is the verse, there are four bars of intro first, which sould be
played using the main riff. The two bars of A should be played with
lots of muting and the same 14-12 ending as the E riff, using this
chord:
A9
e-12-
B-12-
G-12-
D-11-
A-12-
E---
The B-->A progression should be played like this:
-7-----7--6-5---
-10----10-9-8---
-8-----8--7-6---
-7-----7--6-5---
-9-----9--8-7---
----------------
The last bars of E should then be played on the 12th fret, using the E
,B,and G strings. The chorus seems to be just playing around on that
same pattern.
For the solo, you can just play Em pentatonic the entire time, or switch
to Am and Bm pentatonic when those bars are played.
Lyrics:
Woke up this morning and I had those Walking Blues (x2)
I wasn't walkin' nowhere 'cause I didn't have no floor!
Staring over the edge of the bed
My old lady lying next to me, I started to cry (x2)
She said "I'm gonna take this diploma,
I'm gonna slice you in the eye!"
Well I'm alright (he's alright) (x9)
'cause I got a degree!
Escaping through my window
There's a policeman on the lawn outside my home (x2)
I opened my mouth to scream
But my throat was full of foam
So I'm sittin' in this cell
My fortune dwindled to a thimble full of filth (x2)
I may spend the rest of my life in jail
But at least it's got a floor!

The chords are a little easier if you move them all down a half-step,
but I like the sound of all the flat chords, personally.

Eb Bb Ab >F9
It took me a long time to get back on the train
(the chord pattern is the same for all the verses)
Now I'm gone and I'll never look back again
I'm gone and I'll never look back at all
You know I'll never look back again
I turn my face into the howlin' wind
It took me a long time to get back on the train
See my face in the town that's flashing by
See me standing at the station in the rain
See me standing there beside the car
I left it all behind, again I'll travel far
It took me a long time to get back on the train
When I jumped off, I had a bucket full of thoughts
When I first jumped off, I held that bucket in my hand
Ideas that would take me all around the world

My Yellow in this case is not so mello. In

And all of these emotions of mine keeps holding me from, uh,
giving my life to a rainbow like you. But I'm, uh,
yeah, I'm bold as love
yeah, yeah
Well, I'm bold, bold
as love, hear me talkin' girl.
I'm bold as

Play D7 lick twice then same for C7..repeat under the lyrics.
For this particular tune, I use this scale to jam - I don't
know if it's a real scale or mode since I am lame and I only
know pentatonics, but it is great to improvise melodically
over major chords

Take these notes and apply them in this position as well
as down around the 7th/9th frets (where you play the verse
riff) and use alot of slurs/hammers/pull-offs to get a
Trey-ish sounding jam over this tune. One of my fav's.

You told me of that secret place
I saw it when I met you the walrus on your face
Strike an Em and Im not sure of the words here
Continue as before with the lyrics:
????? (Im not sure about the fourth verse, something about a load of shit)
He went across the street and he called his dad
Now youll never get the raise you thought you had
Everybody started screaming when they saw the blood
Everyone was screaming when they saw the blood
Then strike an Em and sing the words Im not sure about

Intro: At the beginning, Trey seems to just plays alterations of Em, and
holds them for 4 measures each while Fishman plays lays down a groove.

Main Riff: This is very similar, in fact, the same as the main riff in
Weekapaug Grove. This is how I think Trey plays it, and it sounds
pretty close.

On the album version Trey plays something like this between the verses, but live this
section is mainly improvised.

During the bass solo & verses, alternate between E7 and A, using palm
muting. As the song progresses, Trey uses less and less muting, so use
your judgment.
Here are a few of the chords I've heard Trey "funk around on" to
fill this space with:
E7+9 Em7+9
E---------14----------------
B---9-----12----------------
G---7-----12----------------
D---8-----12----------------
A---7-----------------------
E---------12----------------
E7 A
Come stumble my mirth beaten worker
A7
I'm Jezmund the family berzerker
E7 A
I'm bought for the price of a flagon of rice
The wind buffs the cabin
You speak of your life
E7
Or more willingly Locust the Lurker
...and so on.
Follow this pattern for the verse using your right palm the mute the
sound and in between lines let it lose and crank it out real loud.
The chorus goes
G A
But who can unlearn all the facts that I've learned
-
G E7
As I sat in their chairs 'til my synapses burned
G A
And the torture of chalk dust collects on my tongue
G A
Thoughts follow my vision and dance in the sun
G A
All my vasoconstrictors they come slowly undone
G
Can't this wait till I'm old?
(use main riff)
Can't I live while I'm young?
(use main riff)
Can't I live while I'm young?
It then goes on with E to A to G tickle
End of song progression.
