Basics
• 469 B.C – 399 B.C.• Greek Philosopher- the love of
wisdom• Made living as a stonemason• Had wife, Xanthippe, and children• Wanted Oligarchy for Gov.
Teachings
• Looked for Answers• Examined own ideas and questioned their
own beliefs (Socratic Method)• Both Students and Socrates questioned
everyone, including government• Answered Question with Questions• Never wrote a word of Philosophy • “he believed that the difference between
right and wrong was people’s reason and not in society.”
Socratic Method vs Sophists
• Pursued only the truth
• Took no money for teachings
• Asked simple questions about obvious things (questioning)
• Did not consider themselves “experts”
• Trained students to debate either side of the argument
• Committed to individualism
• Many “correct ways” to achieve a goal but no “Appropriate way”
Socrates on Trial
• Government was in war with Sparta• Afraid of Rebellion• Socrates accused of: Corrupting the youth

Accusers of Socrates
• Meletus- he was a poet. Considered “Puppet” of the other accuser, Anytus.
• Anytus- He was the most influential and made the main accusation. He was a powerful middle class politician.
• Lycon- Described as an orator (strong public speaker). He made all the “Necessary Preparations” for the trial.

Hippocratic Oath
• A oath taken by new physicians basically
swearing to the gods that
they will uphold a number
of standards and morals.
Became Famous Because….
• Helped King of Macedonia recover from tuberculosis (Disease of the lungs)
• He battled the plague (a bacteria-caused disease that spreads quickly and can cause death) for three years in Athens (430–427 B.C.E. ).
• Believed sickness did NOT come from supernatural forces(the Gods)
