As the sun peaked over the mountains, its rays bright against a silky curtain of clouds that
lavished the sky, two puppies woke from their cozy beds. Warm light pooled into their home
illuminating the floors with bright shapes that inched across the floor as the golden speck rose
onto a blue-y canvas. One, with a black spot on his back named Meatball, yawned then squinted
his eyes to look up to his big sister, Cally, who was wriggling her toes beside him. They both
beamed at each other and wagged their tails; it was the first rainless Saturday in weeks which
meant they would finally get to go to their favourite park for the first time in a long while. But
before they set off, a lot of preparation needed to be done: first, they would have a nutritional
breakfast, pick out toys to bring, and finally they would stretch for ten minutes to prepare for all
the exercise they would get at the park.

Once they had licked their bowls of kibbles clean, they tumbled over each other as they rushed to
the mountain of toys that were kept in a basket near their beds.
Hey! Cally exclaims, We should only bring only one toy to the park today.
Why? Meatball responds. Wouldnt that be boring?
No, Meatball, the time we spend together isprecious and we cannot waste any time dawdling
on our own chew toys. I want today to be special since it decided to clear up after the mopey
weather.
Then what will we bring? Meatball worried, still apprehensive of getting bored.
How about this? Cally teethed out a ragged rope with a knot that she loved.
Tug of war? Meatball wouldve loved to do that, if he didnt always lose to his sister. Every
time they played that game he would knowingly lose since his big sister was twice his size.
Today, he did not want to be defeated, once again. Here, proposed Meatball, Ill find
something I want to do. So he decided to dive right into the messy pile to find his favourite
Frisbee. Cally dove in from behind as well, causing an eruption of jubilant howls as it sent
Meatball and a couple other toys flying in different directions.
Finally, they found the Frisbee but because of Callys plunge after Meatballs dive, the Frisbee
had snapped into two. Meatball hopped out of the basket defeated and lay on the ground with his
head on his short arms. Cally, who was still swimming in the heap (with her fur getting tangled
and caught on the corner of objects,) tried to cheer him up by balancing a rubber bone on her
head. She lost control and crashed into the toys again causing some of the things to fly out.
Meatball chuckled but noticed that a red ball with a blue star had bounded out of the pile and

headed straight towards his head. By instinct, he jumped up and caught the ball in this mouth and
wrestled with it. Cally then tackled her little brother and retrieved the red ball. Although neither
of the puppies have ever seen that ball before, it was perfect.
Next, although already warmed up, they started to stretch. Rolling around on the hardwood floor
twisting their spines and spreading all their paws apart induced an anxiety to run around. While
moving around, they chuckled together at how ridiculous they felt. Since they were cooped up
inside for a couple of days both felt antsy and decided to end the warm-up short. Then finally,
they took the ball with the blue star and headed out.
Today the park was packed with others who were drawn from the warm, blissful weather. Every
time in the past, when they came on a sunny day, the grass fields and winding sidewalks became
lively. Even the skies seem more crowded with kites, hovering Frisbees, and buzzing, electric
helicopters. But the puppies did not care for the lack of room in the park, they simply loved the
high spirits which radiated around them.
They played for hours on end, chasing after the red rubber ball, rolling around in the freshly
mown blades of grass. They began to get silly in the way they passed the ball; instead of catching
it with their mouths they would let it bounce of their heads or stomachs. Cally began jumping
onto the ball as it got passed and every jump, she would rise higher than before. Then, on one of
her highest leaps she accidentally rolled her paw over the ball as she landed. In horror, Meatball
bound to her side.
Cally! Meatball panted, Can you move?
Cally tried to get up but she couldnt gather any strength in her left arm. With Meatballs help
she sat up with her arm limp and hobbled over to their ball that had rolled away.

Before she clenched it in her teeth, she asked her little brother, Take me to the vet. The one we
used to go to when we got sick. Luckily, there was a mall just a block away where there was a
veterinarian they were familiar with.
Once they had hobbled across the road and staggered the sidewalks to the entrance of the vet,
Meatball took the ball Cally had carried, and helped her into the wheel chair. Five minutes later
she was sent into the emergency room behind the flapping doors. Meatball slumped miserably in
the uncomfortable chair in the waiting room. After half an hour, the lady at the desk gave him the
O.K to see Cally.
The white walls of the hallway seemed painfully bare and narrower than the last time he had
walked through them which made him pant a little more excessively than usual and made his
palms sweat. When the doctor opened the door he saw Cally on top of the high chair who greeted
him with a smile and soft bark. As the vet explained how her fall had caused a break in her bone,
he tucked the cast that covered her right ankle away in a cream coloured sling.
Meatball hopped up beside her and nuzzled his head on her shoulder. Without a word Meatball
took the red ball and dropped it at her feet, which were still covered in dried up dirt. Cally put
her left paw on top of it and looked up. Both knew, as much as they didnt want to, it was time to
return home.
Im sorry I got hurt, said Cally on the way back to the house.
Its okay Cally, I still had a glorious time with you. Im just happy youre alright!

In the end that was all that mattered to either of them. Although they had fun running around in
the balmy warmth of daylight, it was obvious that they needed to be enveloped back in their
blankets in the comfort of their home.
As soon as they stepped inside, they headed toward their beds and flopped down and cozied back
into a mindless sleep.
