Andy thanks big hearted auctioneersIt is not always a case of going, going, gone atCuttlestones - the big hearted auctioneers justcannot stop giving to local children with disabilitiesand terminal illness.

Since April 1, 2014, Cuttlestones’ Penkridge andWolverhampton auction houses have handed over£6,529 to Cannock based charity Newlife Foundationfor Disabled Children, with all the money spent on localchildren with disabilities and terminal illness.

One of the beneficiaries of Cuttlestones generosity was13–year-old Andy Speke who visited the auctioneersPinfold Lane premises in Penkridge to show the staffhis new powered wheelchair. Andy has Spinal MuscularAtrophy Type Two and is a full time power wheelchairuser who had outgrown his old equipment. He can nowmaintain his independence and his quality of life hasimproved.

“Meeting Andy and his nan Beverley was a pleasure,”said Cuttlestones MD Ben Gamble. “He is a happy ladwho is going to school every day and battling againstobstacles.

“We know for sure that the monies raised are going topeople who really need it and have often been turneddown for assistance through other channels.”

Andy and his brother Dean are cared for bygrandmother Beverley Speke, who is full of praise forthe UK’s leading children’s disability charity.

“Newlife have always been there to help,” said Beverley.“They are fantastic – without their help we would haveended up without it.

“The new chair gives Andy independence and he is ableto ‘walk to school’ on his own. If Andy didn’t get hisnew chair he would hate it.

“He would need someone to take him to school. He isvery bright and top of the class – it is just thesemuscular problems.

“I have seen many kids who have been helped byNewlife - they are always there to help.”

Statutory services often have a responsibility to makeequipment provision – but when help is declined,Newlife steps in. The charity challenges many suchdecisions and has an impressive success rate.

However, when Newlife is unable overturn thesedecisions it provides the equipment through a

range of grant and loan services with the support offront-line health professionals.

Newlife Lead Nurse Karen Dobson added: “We are gladthe equipment we were able to give the family made adifference when Andy needed it.

“We always aim to provide a listening ear for familieswhen they are at their most vulnerable; they needsomeone to understand their situation and supportthem getting the help they need when they need it. Evenif they are not sure what this is, our nurses have years ofexperience to help guide them to the best solution.”

Newlife Local, launched at the beginning of March, enables local people to find out who needs help in theircounty right now and highlights the support the charitygives vulnerable families. The Newlife County LiaisonTeam – telephone 01543 431 444 or [email protected] – are able to show specificways people can help support children with disabilityand terminal illness and their families.

More information on the charity can be found at www.newlifecharity.co.uk

Write Here,Write Now, ‘Write’Wins!St Dominic’s High School for Girls Teamwin Area FinalsIt could have been a daunting experience, presenting to a panel of judges as well as a roomfull of contemporaries and dignitaries, atYarnfield Park Business Centre but eight teamsof teenage entrepreneurs from schools in theStone and Stafford area were un-phased onWednesday 25th March.

The Young Enterprise Company Programme hasbeen running since 1963 and in that time, over amillion 15-19 year old students have set up andrun a real frim for a year, under the guidance of a

Business Volunteer and the Business Teacher attheir school. Doing everythiing from raising capitalthrough designing and developing their product tocreating a website, marketing and advertising, producing a complete company report andultimately winding up the firm and paying theirtaxes, students develop key skills which are provento make young people more attractive toprospective employers.

As Ian Parkinson from Yarnfield Park said, “I am inawe of the entrepreneurship of these youngachievers; they are amazing. Everybody who hastaken part in this competition is a winner and needsto be proud of what they have achieved and learnedover the last few months.”

Déjà Vu - The (Un)Changing Faceof GlassesWhen NHS spectacles werefirst introduced they were ofthe John Lennon type – a smallrounded eye-shape with plaingold rims. The style made ahuge comeback in the 1980sand the look was revived oncemore following the Harry Potterfilms.

The classic American 40’s‘combination’ style of plasticsides and ‘hoods’ over a metalrim – another style that brieflyreturned in the 1980s is onceagain appearing in manufacturerscatalogues.

The original plastic ‘Wayfarer’

made a strong comeback in the80’s as a ‘retro’ style, leading tothe establishment of the designersunglasses market. That and the1950s Buddy Holly style, ininnumerable variations, is onceagain in vogue as ‘geek chic’.In the last year or so, that otherRayban classic, the Aviator, hasbeen revived and so has the1960s upswept ‘cat eye’ style.

Rimless styles, very popular inthe 1930s and having come backstrongly during the last decade, are once again on the wane.

Like them or not, that other 1980sstaple, gigantic styles in

multi-colour, zebra-skin orcrocodile effect plastic – theDeidre Barlow look - will surelybe back before too long!

Dementia AwarenessWeek 17-23MayCan I avoid getting Dementia? If you want a guarantee, at the present time, thenthe answer is no. Dementia is regularly in thenews, and new discoveries are made on a dailybasis through the massive investment across theWorld in research.

Dementia Awareness Week is 17th-23rd Mayand it would be fantastic if a breakthrough could beannounced. But at the time of writing, there is nocertain way to prevent dementia.

Engaging in arts and crafts is very much in the newsat present with research in the US indicating thatengaging in activities, socialising and keeping thebrain active does seem to stave off mild cognitiveimpairment (pre-dementia). It was a small sampleand limited its study to ‘craft’ related activities.More work is anticipated in this area. We use a widerange of activities as part of our day opportunitiesfor people with dementia and other complex needs, including arts and crafts, telephone 01785 788481.

There are however some general consideration thatwe can make to improve our lifestyle and guardagainst Dementia (NHS). It also guards against othercomplaints that are prevailent in later life.http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/dementia-guide/

• Eat a healthy diet• Maintain a healthy weight• Exercise regularly• Don’t drink too much alcohol• Stop smoking (if you smoke)• Make sure to keep your blood pressure at ahealthy level

Age UK South Staffordshire support older peoplemake a difference through a range of exerciseoptions with a wide range of exercise groups andguided walks by trained walk leaders. We are

planning to launch a range of short guided outdoorexercise opportunities for people with dementia andtheir carers, and have opportunities for interestedpeople to train as volunteer leaders of thesesessions (A session is planned for Wednesday 3rdJune, Haling Dene, Penkridge) Please contact SueBlower for further information 01785 788472.www.ageuk.org.uk/southstaffs

Exercising regularly will make your heart and bloodcirculatory system more efficient. It will also help tolower your cholesterol and keep your blood pressureat a healthy level, decreasing your risk of develop-ing some kinds of dementia. The exercise sessionswe run (and are run by our partners) are usually lowcost or even free – our general group walks led by atrained walk leader are free of charge.

Helping to make dementia better understoodPeople with dementia get by with a little help fromtheir friends. And anybody can become aDementia Friend. It’s just about understanding a bitmore about dementia and the small things you cando to help people with the condition. People withdementia want to carry on going about their dailylives and feeling included in their local community, but they sometimes need a helping hand to do so.Dementia Friends learn a little bit about what it’s liketo live with dementia and turns that understandinginto action. This could be helping someone find theright bus or being patient in a till queue if someonewith dementia is taking longer to pay. Everyaction counts. There are over a million new dementiafriends across the country now, and it is easy to signup. You can use this website,www.dementiafriends.org.uk/ or contact LauraWright, at Age UK South Staffordshire,01785 788 468.

No one in Staffordshire should facecancer alone! No one should face cancer alone. These words are at the heart of the Staffordshireand Wolverhampton Cancer Advocacy Project andnow a new film has been released celebrating thework of the project and highlighting the impactthat advocacy can have on the lives of olderpeople affected by cancer.

This ground breaking support project began in 2011as a collaboration between Older People’sAdvocacy Alliance (OPAALUK) and MacmillanCancer Support and is now being offered by theBeth Johnson Foundation across the whole ofStaffordshire/Stoke on Trent and Wolverhampton.

There are around 1.3 million older people (65+) livingwith cancer in the UK indicating a possible greatdemand for this service; the current project isfunded by Macmillan Cancer Support.

The Beth Johnson Foundation has a long history ofproviding advocacy for older people and ofworking with volunteers. The Foundation employsfive Volunteer Co-ordinators who are eachresponsible for promoting the project in their ownarea in order to acquire referrals and to attractpeople to become volunteer advocates.

The Co-ordinators aim to recruit and train olderpeople who themselves have been affected bycancer, to provide support to their peers. Initialinduction and training is provided and the volunteeradvocates are offered regular supervision and grouppeer support with an ongoing training programme.Advocates support and enable people to exercisetheir rights, express their views, explore and makeinformed choices. They aim to be the “voice” of theolder person, are non-judgemental and make sure

those they support are heard and their views andopinions are acted upon.

The issues addressed by the advocates have beenwide ranging from supporting patients withoncology appointments to helping someonedischarged from hospital to find shelteredaccommodation.

People who have been supported by an advocatehave said:“I don’t think I’d be here if I didn’t have the supportas I didn’t have the fight or the will.”“The service is fantastic, the things organised havebeen second to none.”“I don’t know how I would have coped if it wasn’tfor you.”

If you are interested in training to be an advocateor would like to refer someone to the projectplease contact [email protected] ortelephone 01782 844036.

Early education provides long-term advantagesIn a difficult economic climate,it is tempting for parents to putoff early years education andwait until their children reach5 years of age before enrollingthem in school. But researchhas demonstrated the long-term benefits of a stimulatingeducational environment for 3and 4 year olds.

Children who receive a rich varietyof learning during their pre-school years achieve measurablybetter academic results at age10, according to research led byProf Edward Melhuish at Birkbeck,University of London.

The research demonstrates thata combination of a good homelearning environment, good

pre-school education and a goodprimary school were all importantfor later academic achievement.

In pre-school your child will listento poetry and songs - buildingblocks needed to grasp phonicsand reading skills when it isdevelopmentally appropriate. Theplay that takes place with water, sand and containers forms thefoundation for understandingsome basic mathematics concepts.

Matching, sequencing, one-to-onecorrespondence are all activitiesthat are repeated in pre-schoolsettings and help children prepareto learn more complex subjects.Children will also be introduced tousing information technologies forlearning, not just play.

Interacting with other childrenmeans learning how to wait, howto take turns, and how to listen.Young children learn social skillswhen they interact with otherchildren and these social skills arenot only critical to a developingpersonality, they are necessary togetting, and keeping, a job later inlife. Most importantly, children ineducation from age 3 learn how tosocialise with peers, manage stressand solve problems.

After a Will, one of the most importantdocuments that all adults should have in placeis a Lasting Power of Attorney.

These documents, ‘LPAs’, enable you topersonally choose who will be authorised to makeyour decisions should you loose mental capacity.

Do not think loss of mental capacity is only aproblem for the very elderly perhaps withdementia. It is not an age related problem. Anyonecan loose capacity at any age. Sadly all it takes issomething as simple as a fall or a car crash, or astroke. And this can happen to anyone at any age.

If you do not have the documents in place and theproblem does occur, then someone, generally, but not always a family member mustmake application to the Court of Protection forthem to be authorised by that court to make yourdecisions. This process is very long and complexand expensive. It can take up to 9 months andseveral thousands of pounds in fees.

This is a very painful process for a family memberto have to undertake on your behalf.

And, you may end up with someone you wouldnot have chosen yourself having the legalauthority to make your decisions for you.

Even worse is the case where the court may haveto choose a professional person as attorney, whowill then be charging your estate significant fees, possibly for years, for making your decisions foryou.

The answer is very simple, have your LPAsprepared now, while you can clearly make your

own decisions about who should be the namedattorneys.

ArmchairMortgages LtdProtecting your lifestyleInsurance- How important is it?Well sorry to statebut in this country we attach very little importance toit. Yes, we insure our property if we own it or have amortgage and yes we insure our car. The commondenominator with both products is they arecompulsory if you have a mortgage as the lenderneeds to protect their interests and of course youshould not be driving a car unless you are insured.Generally speaking insuring the contents of yourhome is normally taken out by sensible peoplewishing to cover the costs involved of replacingvaluable and/or sentimental items in the event of anaccident or theft, and of course holiday insuranceoffering peace of mind in the event of an accident orillness abroad, fine so far.

Now move on to other insurance products on themarket and this is sometimes hard to comprehendbut people insure their mobile phones, satellite dish, laptop, kindle, garden tools, all replaceable for a fewhundred pounds, not going to go there with the cat andthe dog!!! All the aforementioned items need paying for, which comes from the income people earn whilstworking. What if for some reason that income stopshow do people cope with all this expenditure? You stillhave to pay the monthly mortgage cost on top of thecompulsory insurance policies or there is a danger oflosing your home, why do you think all these houseauctions you see on TV take place? It’s because over55% of people with a mortgage have not given enoughserious consideration to the what if question. Most thinkit will never happen to me, I am healthly and will neverbe made redundant, wrong. We read about accidentsall the time and fairly young people being diagnosedwith all manner of illnesses. So going back to the houseauctions scenario it’s because in most cases the lenderhas re-possessed the property as the borrowers havedefaulted. This can be caused by the death of one ofthe borrowers, redundancy, a critical or long termsillness that prevents one of the couples going to work, especially harmfull if it’s the main or only incomecoming in every month. Imagine the heart ache for ayoung mother at home with children and she has tomove out of the family home because the breadwinner, her partner, has died?

So, what are the options to protect the home beingre-possessed? The cheapest option in the event ofpremature death by one of the borrowers is MortgageProtection. This is designed to pay off the mortgage andbecause the amount paid out reduces in line with theamount owed to the lender it makes the monthlypremium very affordable, especially for younger couplesand more so if they are both non smokers. Once themonthly premium is calculated this will never increaseso over a typical 25 year term of the mortgage thisbecomes very cost effective in later years. Criticalillness can be taken out with the policy, which of coursewould increase the cost as there is more chance of theprovider having to pay out over the time the policy runsfor. Critical Illness pays out a lump sum on diagnosis ofa range of illnesses listed on the policy document andtypically they include cancer, heart attack, stroke, totaland permanent disability etc. Once again the youngerthe applicant the cheaper it will be and of course it willcentre around affordability at the time.

The other area to consider is to protect income in theevent of not being able to work due to illness orredundancy. Some borowers like the Accident,Sickness & Redundancy product as this coverseverything apart from death but has it’s limitations asthe policy only pays out for 12 or 24 months, depending on which provider you use. If redundancy isnot a great concern Permanent Health Insurance, commonly known as Income Protection, is a betteroption as it will provide the income for as long as theclaiment is off work. So a 35 year old with a nominatedretirement age of 65 who will never work again becauseof ill health would receive around 60% of their incomeuntil aged 65. As an example against earnings of£30000 per year the policy would pay out £18000 forthe next 30 years, that’s £540000 overall, and undercurrent legislation would be tax free.

So the message is clear, do not leave yourselfunprotected and risk losing your home for the sake of afew pounds a month as it just doesn’t make sense. I amreally looking forward to your telephone call.
