ForwardA style guide is something that every

paper should have. It should list all of the design things that are specific to their publication and have all of their preferences in it. It should be something that anyone who is familiar with InDesign could pick and up and then use to create that paper's product.

A style guide is something that The Pendulum has long needed. When I started on staff, the only person on the design team that had officially been part of staff before had been an intern and had not done much for the paper at all. I had to learn the style of The Pendulum from the then-editor-in-chief, Anna Johnson. The editor-in-chief of a paper has many jobs, but one of them should

not be explaining to designers every little nuance of the paper's style, especially when they have so many other things to do.

I decided to make this style guide as my final project for Dr. Makemson's Design and Information Graphics class because I felt it was something that would continue to be useful in the years to come. I know that the design staff that comes after me will have many veterans of the current staff so they will know what they are doing. However, I can't say anything about the staff after them or even the staff after that one. Hopefully, this project will be useful to all future staff of The Pendulum.

There will be copies of this able to be

found in various places. A copy will be in the Design folder on the server, both an InDesign file and a PDF. The InDesign file will, obviously, be a document that future designers and staff members can edit so that, if the style happens to change, so can the style guide. Hopefully, it will be something that all future design chiefs will keep up with and edit to reflect the product that they help to create.

The Pendulum is currently in the process of undergoing some major design changes. As we undergo these changes, and decide on new styles, I plan to update this document so that staffs following ours will be able to accurately produce an excellent and unified product.

This style guide was created by Kristen Case.

Basics ‑ TypographyHow to create a text box: Click the type tool in the left hand menu. Select the font that you want and type in the box.

The Pendulum has certain fonts that they use for each specific text element. These fonts can be found in the Character Styles guide, which is located in the right-hand menu. If you do not see Character Styles and Paragraph Styles, click on Window, scroll down to Styles and click Character Styles. (Shift + Command + F11)

HEADLINES: There are two options for headline fonts: Helvetica Neue Condensed Bold and Calisto MT Regular. To create these headlines, highlight the text, click Character Styles and then click NewsOpinionsSports Headline for the Helvetica version, NewsOpinionsSports Secondary Headline for the Calisto version. Sometimes the Helvetica version is just Bold, not Condensed Bold, so make sure to change that.

THINGS TO REMEMBER*The leading of the headlines (number under the font) needs to be two points larger than the headline.*No headlines larger than 42, none smaller than 20!

DECKS: There is only one option for decks: Calisto MT Italic. The deck font is NOT the deck font that is listed in the Character Styles guide. In order to get the correct font, you must select the NewsOpinionsSports Secondary Headline style and then change it from Regular to Italic. Decks can only be paired with a headline that is Helvetica Neue Condensed Bold, NOT the Calisto headline.

THINGS TO REMEMBER*Decks must be around half the size of the headline, and cannot come any closer to the headline size than 8 points.*They must be paired with Helvetica Neue Condensed Bold headlines, nothing else.

BODY COPY: There is only one font for body copy: Lucida Bright Regular (8/9.6).To create body copy, go to File > Place (Command + D), select the story you are placing then place your story on the page. Highlight all the text that you have placed with Command + A and then go to Paragraph Styles. Select Basic in the Paragraph Styles and then go to Character Styles and select Body Copy.

THINGS TO REMEMBER*The size of body copy never changes, it is always 8 pt. font with a leading of 9.6 pt. (which is the automatic setting for leading).*Body copy can never be spread more than 30 or squished beyond -30.

Basics ‑ ColorsHow to create a color swatch: Click on Swatches in the right-hand menu. If you do not see the Swatches menu, click on Window > Color, and then Swatches. Select the Black swatch, then New Swatch at the bottom of panel. After making sure that the color swatch is in CMYK color mode, change the values until you get the desired color.

When to use spot colors: The Pendulum's colors are used in the headers for each section (News – Green, International – Purple, Editiorial/Opinions – Blue, Style – Orange, Sports – Red) and in each section's More Online boxes.

When not to use spot colors: The Pendulum's colors are really only used for those two things listed above, and occasionally for other pieces of graphics. Other colors can be used as well, but ALL color should be used sparingly on pages. No color other than the grey should be used on black and white pages because it does not print correctly if a color is sent to be printed in black and white.

When using black, the percentages are as follows: Briefs: 5% black, changed in the swatches panel, the Tint number.Info Boxes: 10% black, changed in the swatches panel, the Tint number.

Basics ‑ hierarchyWith headlines, it is important that the first headline on the page is also the largest. Since the first headline on the page is the lead

story for that page, it needs to call the most attention.

As the headlines go down the page, they need to get smaller in size.

This hierarchy o fheadlines go with the hierarchy of stories on the page. This does not denote that the stories with smaller headlines are less important, they are just not necessarily as relevant to a

majority of the readers of the paper.

Basics ‑ columnsThe Pendulum bases its design mainly on a four column spread. However, it also uses a five column spread in order to create variation and visual interest. There is no set rule for what pages get what number of columns for the most part, however, there is a document on the server that gives an idea for how many columns to use on each page.

Basics ‑ JustificationAll News articles are left-justified, as well as all Style articles and all Sports articles.Opinions columns and the editorial, however, are ragged-right. In addition, any column or article in the Style and Sports sections that include the writer's opinion are ragged-right as well, to present them as opinions, not just facts.Page 7

TEASER #1

NamePosition

This is one version of what the front page of The Pendulum could look like. Depending on the content that is available that week, the picture can be bigger, there may be multiple pictures, or other potential graphical elements such as pull quotes, by the numbers, or info boxes. It is also important that whatever art runs on the front page be compelling enough to run large.

Often, some of the stories on the front page will jump, if not all the stories. It is imperative that these jumps be correct, so they are often some of the last things

that are done and double checked. The other important part of jumps

is that every story that does not finish on the front page get a jump teaser. These are the red words located where the story ends on this page and directs the reader to the page that the story continues and finishes on. The font used is Helvetica Neue Condensed Bold and it is size 13 font with a leading of 15.6. The color is the red mentioned in the colors section, previously and it is always right-aligned (ragged-left). In addition, both the title of the jump – which does not have to correspond with the headline of the jump, but rather the subject matter of the article – and the

word PAGE must be in all capital letters.Other things to keep in mind are the

teasers. Generally there is one cutout and one full picture, although this can change depending on the content being teased. There is also one colored bar behind the teaser headline and one without. The color can be sampled from one of the pictures, or it can be one of the spot colors. Generally, it is better to sample from one of the pictures because then it looks more cohesive.

The number of articles on the front page varies from week to week, so be sure that the design is also varied.

News

News is the single largest section in the newspaper. In 24-page editions, it takes up the first 9 pages. Generally news is not stylized very much since it is the most serious part of the paper. There are some things that lend themselves to stylization and interesting visuals, such SGA elections and infographics, but for the most part it is just the pictures, stories and

info boxes with an occasional "By the Numbers" thrown in.

"By the Numbers" is something that is covered in a later section of this style guide. The two stylistic things that are covered in this section of the style guide are the "News Calendar" and the "Weekly Wrap-Up."

The News Calendar is something that appears every week in The Pendulum.

It is a single, grey box that is divided in to eight sections and located on the last page of the News section (generally page eight or nine), along with the News Briefs (found in the Story Elements section) and the Weekly Wrap-Up.

The Weekly Wrap-Up is also located on the last page of the News section, when it runs. It is a section that sums up some of the speeches and events

that happen around campus during the week. Full stories from these events can be found online, but they are teased in the paper. The style varies from week to week, but there is generally one lead story that has a stroke around it. The other stories are generally underneath or above that story with a stroke between them. The stroke should be .5 pt, 60% black.

Editorial Opinions

The Opinions editor of the paper has two sections under their control, the Opinions section (obviously) and the Editorial section. These are some of the easiest pages to design because the content comes in fairly early. There are no staples on the Opinions Page, pictures, number of columns and layout changes from week to week. There are two staples on the Editiorial page, however, and they are the Staff Box and the "To Comment" Box.

The Staff Box has the names of all of the exectuive staff members and the assistants, as well as The Pendulum's adviser, Colin Donohue. It also talks about The Pendulum's mission as a paper. It also has a link to the complete staff list.

It is one grey box that spans four columns in a five columns spread, and is divided into four columns within. It also has The Pendulum's masthead and when it was established. The intro paragraph is only one column, as

opposed to the four columns that the names and positions are organized in.

The "To Comment" Box is a bo that encourages readers to comment on any article in The Pendulum. It reads as follows: "We appreciate original responses to Pendulum articles. Feedback of 250 words or less can be sent in several ways.

Letters to the editor can be emailed to [email protected] or sent to 7012 Campus Box, Elon, N.C. 27244.

Content will be edited for clarity,

length and accuracy. All submissions must include a name and phone number.

A message board also accompanies each article online at ElonPendulum.com, where commentary can be quickly posted."

The other stylistic thing for the Opinions section of the paper is that the columns, unlike in the News, International, Style and Sports sections, are not left-justified, they are ragged-right.

The Pendulum is published each Wednesday of the academic year. Letters to the editor and guest columns are welcome and should be typed, signed and emailed to [email protected] as Word documents. The Pendulum reserves the right to edit obscene and potentially libelous material. Lengthy letters or columns may be trimmed to fit. All submissions become the property of The Pendulum and will not be returned.

Sports

The Sports section is the last section in the paper. It is known as the "second entry point" to the paper, and as such, the Sports header goes on the back page of the

paper, instead of on the first page of the section.

For the most part, the same rules that apply to news apply to the Sports section as well. All stories

are left-justified, except when there are sports columns, in which case they are ragged-right.

Occasionally, there are sports briefs (which are covered in the

story elements section) and other elements, such as schedule graphics and info boxes, but those vary from story to story and week to week, so there is no set style for them.

Photography Basics

NAME | PositionCutline

Laying out photos on the page is not difficult at all. There are a few basic things to keep in mind at all times. The first is that all photos have to have a stroke of .5 black. Both the photo credit name and position font are mentioned in the previous section on Typography. They belong in the same box as the cutline and should be just underneath the stroke for the photo. The boxes

should essentially be touching. The font for cutlines was also

mentioned in the Typography section, and should be directly underneath the photo credit, in the same box as previously mentioned.

The main rule about pictures is that they must fit in a certain number of columns, they cannot expand halfway into any columns.

The exception to this rule is headshots. All headshots must be 6p0 x 9p0 picas with a stroke (just like normal photos) and be three lines in to the first column of the story. Also, instead of having a photo credit and cutline, underneath the headshot should be a single box, with the person's name in all capital letters in the cutline font.

Multiple photos can be used on a

page, but they should be balanced. So if there a photo at the top right of the page, one should also go on the bottom left. If you are putting multiple photos in the same story, they should all be grouped together in the story instead of spread out. (The exception to that is if there is a headshot and a picture, the headshot must go at the beginning of the story.)

This is an example of multiple photos with one story and how best to group visual elements. <—

Story ElementsThe following pages have examples of various story elements. Most of them are able to be copy and pasted on to various pages instead of having specific instructions on how to make them. How to make the various elements of each of these story elements has

already been explained in this style guide.
