jaro does today. Although the mountain strad-dles the Kenya border, its loftiest peak, Waga-gai, lies within Uganda and is best ascended from the Uganda side.

Elgon is an important watershed, and its slopes support a rich variety of altitudinal vegetation zones ranging from montane forest to high open moorland studded with the other-worldly giant lobelia and groundsel plants. Spectacu-lar scenery is the main attraction for hikers on this oft-neglected and relatively undemanding mountain, but there is also a variety of for-est monkeys and small antelope, along with elephant and buffalo. A checklist topping 300 birds includes many species not recorded else-where in Uganda.

Other attractions include ancient cave paint-ings close to the trailhead at Budadiri, and spectacular caves and hot springs within the crater.

Getting thereMbale lies 3-4 hours from Kampala along a good tar road. The trailhead at Budadiri, 20km from Mbale, is accessible by public transport.

KIBALE NATIONAL PARKKibale National Park, home to a host of forest wildlife, is the most magnificent of Uganda’s tropical rain forests and one of the most re-warding areas to explore.

Kibale boasts of 13 species of primates includ-ing the localized Red Colobus and L’Hoest’s monkeys. Kibale’s major attraction though, is the chimpanzees, the delightful apes, which are genetically the closest to humans than to any other living creature. These can be seen swinging in tree branches as one navigates through the tranquil forest trails.

The park is also famous as a birding destina-

tion for bird lovers, endowed with over 372 bird species including the endemic Black eared ground thrush. The 180 km-long migration corridor for wildlife also habours mammals like the elusive forest elephants, buffaloes, gi-ant forest hogs and half a dozen antelope spe-cies, making it one of the most stunning parks in Uganda.

Situated in western Uganda, near the colonial Fort portal Municipality, the park lies close to the tranquil Ndali-Kasenda crater area and is within a half days’ drive of Queen Elizabeth, Rwenzori Mountains and Semiliki National Parks.

Getting thereThe 795 sq km park can be accessed from Uganda’s capital, Kampala, along a paved road via Kasese through the Queen Elizabeth National Park. While Kanyanchu Visitor Cen-tre - the primary centre for tourist activities - 36km from Fort Portal can be reached via a dirt road and is accessible by public transport. The park can also be reached from Kampala via Mubende and Fort Portal or through Mba-rara –Ibanda and Kamwenge. There is daily public transport between Kampala and Fort portal by bus.

MGAHINGA GORILLA NATIONAL PARKMgahinga is part of a larger ecosystem, the Virunga Conservation Area (434km sq) which includes two adjacent parks in Rwanda and Congo. It rises from 2227 m to 4,127m above sea level.

The park which is a cultural heritage featur-ing in the history, folklore and traditional healing practices for local people, covers the north slopes of the three northern Virunga volcanoes Muhavura, Gahinga and Sabinyo. The park derives its name from “Gahinga”a Kinyarwanda word for a pile of volcanic lava stone heaps around which cultivation is car-

ried out. On the other hand, Muhavura means guide and Sabinyo means the Old man’s teeth. It is bordered to the south by Rwanda and to the west by DR Congo. While Sabinyo is deeply eroded with jagged crown and deep gorges and ravines, Gahinga has a swamp filled –crater about 180m wide and Muhavura has a small crater lake about 36m wide at its summit. On some of the steep mountain slopes are caves formed by lava tubes, one of them being the famous Garama cave located near Ntebeko, the park headquar-ters.

Getting thereMgahinga National Park can be accessed by road or air transport.Kisoro Town at the foot of Mt. Muhavura is about 540km from Kampala and takes about 8 hours via Kabale on an excellent paved road surface. Public transport by bus is available on a daily basis.

Mgahinga is located 13 km from Kisoro town and can be accessed by Public transport.Kisoro Town can also be accessed by air. The town boasts of a bitumen runway Airfield at Nyakabande.

MURCHISON FALLS CONSERVATION AREAMurchison Falls Conservation Area covering 5,072 square kilometers is one of Uganda’s largest and oldest protected areas lying at the northern end of the Albertine Rift Valley. It is named after the breath-taking spectacu-lar water falls on the Great River Nile which in 1864,a British explorer Sir Samuel Baker chose to christen Murchison, in honor of the distinguished President of the Royal Geo-graphical Society.

The dramatic waterfalls which is the main-stay of the national park is where the Nile, the

world’s longest river contracts from a grand stream to explode violently through a narrow six metre gorge into the cauldron of turbu-lent water 40 meters below ,popularly known as the Devil’s cauldron . According to Samuel Baker, the water falls is the most important object throughout the course of the river.

Murchison Falls NP boundaries were gazetted in 1952 by the then British Colonial govern-ment after surveys and negotiations with the local district administrations of Bunyoro and Acholi. In August 1954,the Board of Trustees for the Uganda National Parks made deci-sions on the about the lay out and the design of the park. This was followed by the opening up of the tracks to more remote corners of the park such as Rabongo Forest and the Chobe Sector.Besides the magnificent Nile bisecting the park, Murchison Falls became famous for the abundance of wildlife populations in the lush borassus grassland particularly on the northern banks of the River, including herds of elephants, buffalos and giraffes marauding the plains and woodlands. In the 1960s, the estimated population of elephants was close to 16,000.

Murchison Falls has received many notable foreign visitors. In 1907, Winston Churchill hiked, boated and bicycled up the Nile cor-ridor to the falls. He was followed by Theo-dore Roosevelt in 1909 during a hunting sa-fari that cost, by today’s prices, a phenomenal US$1.8m!

In 1951, the falls provided a backdrop for Humphrey Bogart in John Huston’s famous movie, The African Queen which was filmed on location along the Murchison Nile and on Lake Albert. British royals have also visited Murchison, the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) in 1930 and the Queen Mother in 1959 the fauna diversity of the park.

The least happy celebrity visitor was Ernest Hemingway in 1954 that literally dropped in. His intention was simply to overfly the water-fall but his plane clipped an old telegraph wire strung across the gorge and cart wheeled into the river line forest. Hemingway and his wife were rescued and taken to Butiaba where their rescue plane crashed on takeoff. Between September 1972 and October 1973, the flourishing park suffered a setback when the then President Idi Amin imposed a ban on foreign visitors. The national park was also renamed Kabalega Falls after the famous king of Bunyoro who resisted colonization efforts by the ottoman Empire and the British.

In the mid 70s, most of the conservation activi-ties came to a halt prompting unabated poach-ing that rose to unprecedented proportions. The rich park also suffered mass poaching and the wildlife population was largely threatened during the 20 years of insurgency by the re-bel armies which had turned the park as food basket and shooting target with the herds of animals as their subject. However, with the re-turn of peace to the northern region, Wildlife populations have largely recovered. During the popular game drives, a variety of antelopes, elephants, giraffes, buffalos and lions are reg-ularly encountered with increasing frequency.

Getting thereMurchison Falls Conservation Area with the adjoining Karuma and Bugungu Wildlife Re-serves can be accessed through different routes by road to reach Paraa Park headquarters. It can also be reached by air using the daily flights from Entebbe International Airport or chartered aircrafts from Kajjansi airfield to Pakuba airfield, 19km North West of Paraa and south at Bugungu, 13 km from the park headquarters. The most commonly used route is Kampala via Masindi town and Kichumbanyobo Gate which

Page 34: The Pearl Guide_April May Issue 2012

Vol.1, ISSUE 9 - Apr. 201234

is about 300km long and takes an average of 4.5 hours. This route is currently considered the shortest and most convenient with 175km of it being tarmac and 125km of fine murram. This route takes you through Kaniyo Pabidi Forest famous for the chimpanzee tracking before encountering the rift valley escarpment that offers a spectacular view of the national park landscape. The alternative route is via Biso and Bulisa which enables the visitors to enter the park through the Bugungu Gate. Al-though a bit longer than the Kichumbanyobo Gate corridor, this access route leads through Budongo Forest ,down the rift valley escarp-ment with a fascinating view over Lake Albert onto the Blue Mountains in the Democratic Republic of Congo and over the wide open spaces of the massive national park. The adventurous route also leads the visitors through the chimpanzee packed forest before descending to the rift valley escarpment where one can explore the remains of the historical Butiaba Port as well as Wanseko a popular spot south of the Nile delta.Once in the conservation area, the Nile river crossing at Paraa in the heart of the park is approximately 5hrs drive from Kampala (305km). Paraa is 85km from Masindi town by the direct route. A longer (135km) alter-native route passes through Budongo forest and provides scenic views across Lake Albert from the rift valley escarpment above Butiaba. Paraa can also be approached from the north, via Chobe Gate near Karuma Falls and Tangi Gate near Pakwach (25km to Paraa), and Wankwar Gate near Purongo.A vehicle ferry crosses the Nile at Paraa op-erating hourly between 07.00 and 19.00 with the exception of 13.00.

Falls occupying close to 1,978 km square.A World bio-sphere reserve with a RAMSAR wetland site, the park is situated astride the equator and located in south western Uganda lying on the base of the rift valley between Lakes George and Edward. The national park borders Democratic Repub-lic of Congo on its western side. It is sometimes referred to as the pearl of Africa. In Uganda Queen Elizabeth National Park is basically known for the big four animals that is the El-ephants, Lions, Buffaloes and the Leopards. It is also classified as an Important Birding Area (IBA) by Birdlife International.

Getting thereThis park can be accessed most easily from Kampala. The tarmac road from Kampala via Mbarara town-Bushenyi leads to the par cen-tre passing a mere 22 km from Mweya Pen-insular, the main tourism hub .Approaching the park from the south via Mbarara covers a distance of 420km while the north through Fort Portal covers a total of 410 km.En-route to the famed park, visitors have the opportunity to enjoy short detours to Lake Mburo National Park & Kibale National park renowned for chimpanzee tracking .The park can also be accessed from the south from Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

RWENZORI NATIONAL PARKThe 120km Rwenzori chain is regarded to be the legendary snow-capped Mountains of the Moon, described by Ptolemy in AD150. Reaching an elevation of 5,109m, it is also Af-rica’s tallest mountain range, exceeded in al-titude only by the free-standing Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro. The distinctive glacial peaks are visible for miles around, but the slopes above 1,600m are the preserve of hikers, who rate the Rwen-zoris to be the most challenging of all African mountains.A variety of large mammals inhabits the lower slopes, but the Rwenzoris are notable more for their majestic scenery and varied vegetation. The trails lead through rainforest rattling with monkeys and birds, then tall bamboo forest, before emerging on the high-altitude moorland zone, a landscape of bizarre giant lobelias, towered over by black rock and white snow, looking for all the world like the set of a sci-ence fiction film.

AccommodationHostel and campsite at the trailhead, basic hiking huts along the loop trail. Nearby Kasese is a midrange hotel, several budget lodgings, and a campsite.

AccessibilityThe Nyakalengija trailhead lies off the Fort Portal road, 22km from Kasese. Transport can be arranged in Kasese.

KIDEPO VALLEY NATOIONAL PARKOne of Uganda’s most spectacular parks. It is 1,442 square kilometres and harbours scen-ery unsurpassed in any other park in East Af-rica. ‘It could not be any better’ is a common comment on the scenery by visitors who often promise and do come back to Kidepo. Tucked into the corner of Uganda’s border with Sudan and Kenya, the park offers breathtaking Sa-

vannah landscapes, which end in rugged hori-zon. A huge latitudinal range and correspond-ingly wide climatic conditions have evolved an extremely diverse flora. As a result the variety of animal species in the park is equally abun-dant including many which are found no where else in Uganda.

AccommodationAt the Park itself, there are 16 self-contained chalets at Apoka Rest Camp. There is also a hostel comprising of 14 bandas each with two beds; these bandas are not self contained. Both Apoka Lodge and the Bandas are man-aged by the park. Make your reservations through Uganda Wildlife Authority Headquar-ters in Kampala. For visitors who like camping, the park has two ‘Do it yourself’ campsites. You must bring your tent and other camping equipment.

However road conditions are some times dif-ficult and 4-wheel drive vehicles (4WD) are recommended. Visitors should note that the road mainly in use from Kotido to Kaabong passes via Kanawauat.

Visitors intending to travel by road are advised to contact UWA headquarters to seek advice about conditions and safety on the roads.Chartered aircraft are available from Entebbe International Airport to the Park Headquar-ters. The Civil Aviation Authority manages an airstrip at Lomej about 3 km south of the Park Headquarters.

SEMLIKI VALLEY WILDLIFE RESERVESemuliki National Park is an eastern exten-sion of the vast Ituri Forest and forms part of the forest continuum during the climatic up-heavals of the Pleistocene, this is one of the richest areas for both flora and fauna in Af-rica. (Especially for birds). Semuliki National Park is situated in the remote corner of extreme west of Uganda, in bundibugyo District. It lies on Uganda-Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) border within the western arm of the East African Rift Valley. The geographical coordinates are 0o 44’- 00 53’ N - 290 57-30o 11’E. To the southeast are the Rwenzori Mountains, to the west is DRC and to the north Lake Albert. Semuliki National Park (220 km2) gazetted in October 1993, is one of Uganda’s newest National Parks. The Park occupies a flat to gently undulating landform ranging from 670 -760 metres above level. As all streams and rivers from the surrounding areas are flooded drain into the Park plus the poor drainage and topography, many areas are flooded during the rainy season. The average annual rainfall is 1250 mm with peaks from March to May and September and December. The tempera-ture varies from 18o C - 30o C with relatively small daily variations.

Getting thereThere are two major roads from Kampala to Fort Portal: Kampala-Fort Portal via Mubende is about 180 Km. (about 4-5 hrs drive) while Kampala -Fort Portal via Ma-saka, Mbarara, Kasese is about465 Km (7-8 hrs). In both routes 2-wheel drive vehicles can be useful. While the Kampala-Fort Portal via Mubende is much shorter, the Kampala-Fort Portal via Masaka, Mbarara and Kasese gives you opportunity to Visit Lake Mburo National Park, Kyambura Wildlife Reserve, Rwenzori Mountains National Park and Queen Eliza-

beth National Park. From Fort Portal, A two to three hours drive on the rough road towards Bundibugyo will bring you to Sempaya Gate (52 Km). The Park headquarters at Ntandi is 5 Km further from the gate along the same route. A vehicle with high clearance is recommended.Using public means you can take a taxi (mini bus) or a bus to Fort Portal. From the Taxi Park, board one of the pick-up trucks for Bun-dibugyo and stop at Sempaya Gate, which is well sign posted. Return trip will be by the same means but a void being too late (not later than 4.00 p.m.).Alternatively while in Fort Portal contact Kabarole Tours on Plot 1 Molidina Street to organize for you an excursion to Semuliki Valley.

LAKE MBURO NATIONAL PARKLying in the one part of Uganda covered in ex-tensive acacia woodland, Mburo has markedly different fauna to other reserves.Lake Mburo is the best place in the country to see the gigantic eland antelope, as well as zebra, topi, impala, and several acacia-asso-ciated birds. The five lakes within the park attract hippos, crocodiles and a variety of waterbirds, while fringing swamps hide secretive papyrus spe-cialists such as the sitatunga antelope and red, black and yellow papyrus gonalek.

Getting thereLake Mburo National Park is found in Mba-rara district, 3.5 hours drive from Kampala on Mbarara Kampala highway. Turn left at 13 km (Akageti) past Lyantonde, which then brings you to Sanga gate. Both junctions have clearly labelled signposts. It is 13 km from Sanga trading center of Sanga gate, 5 km from the main road to Nshara gate and about 20 minutes drive from Rwonyo Park Head Quarters.

the establishment. The atmosphere is quite pleasant. Each table top has been adorned with a unique de-sign and they are complemented by different brightly coloured chairs. A wine list, cocktail menu and food menu are ready at the table and the wait staff was presentable and pleasant.

The menu is very reasonably priced with the most expensive meal being 28,000/=. That said, you should note that their meals are more on the lighter side and they have a small offering on the “more substantial’ options. They serve an all day breakfast, baguettes, dips, a fairly large selection of tapas, kids’ menu and desserts; it would be very hard not to find something that looks good on the menu. As I was famished and on a short lunch break, my date and I skipped the starters and decided to order our drinks and main meal straight away. She ordered the Lime and Mango Lassi to accompany the well done Prime Beef fillet that came with a creamy mash in a red wine sauce, while I ordered a soda and opted for the crumbed chicken breast. I tried to get some mash as a side but that would take a whole 35 minutes to prepare (they only had enough for the beef fillet), time that I did not have, so, sadly, chips it was. The twenty minutes it took to deliver our food flew by as my friend and I chatted away, with regu-lar checks from the manager and waiter checking that our every need was being met.

Finally, our orders came in good portions and the

presentation was impeccable. My crumbed chicken came with a healthy serving of chips, coleslaw and a bowl with a dip of tomato sauce and mayo and my friend’s Prime Beef Fillet lay on a bed of mash and spinach, with the red wine sauce around it; we dug in immediately. My chicken was a bit overdone and with the crumbs was a bit tough to cut through but I managed just fine when I asked for a steak knife; however my friend’s beef fillet which looked well done at first glance was actually far from it, when she cut into it, it bled onto her mash.

Thankfully, the attentive staff was on standby and when we brought this to their attention were very apologetic and took it back to the kitchen immedi-ately. Albeit the hiccup with our beef, the red wine sauce was simply divine and real treat to the taste buds. It complimented the mashed potatoes well and had we waited long enough, am sure would’ve gone well with the beef.

Our lunch break was quickly coming to an end, so we asked to rather have the beef (now presumably well done) packed to go. The manager apologized once more and gave us a complimentary dessert as an apology for the inconvenience and offered us a quick tour of the place before we left.

We found out that most of their paintings and wood-work were actually done by Ugandan artists (and other East African countries) and MishMash prides

itself as a platform for these artists to gain expo-sure and have their work displayed. It also has a craft shop that has all African inspired things from the cutest kitenge baby clothes to ‘lugabire’ inspired sandals, t-shirts, home décor, shoes and accessories such as the most gorgeous ‘masai blanket’ clutch bag that could be worn on a lot of stuff. MishMash is also host to a lot of events such as Wednesday Movie night under the sky, a quarterly MishMash festival, a conservation and cultural festival and one I am rushing to get tickets for, a comedy show by

Jane Bussman of ‘South Park’ fame.

Apart from the beef hiccup (and little sadness about my mash), I had a wonderful time. Very different setting from the usual Kampala scene that I fre-quent, excellent service, an art feast on the eyes, Family friendly setting, great theme nights/events; generally, a breath of fresh air from the mundane. I have my next visit already planned out in my head, well not everything…just the fact that I will defi-nitely be sitting in the tree house.. ;-)

of your body continue to be healthy.Did you know that getting a massage can help bring down your blood pressure? High blood pressure is reduced as well. This is because massage sets off the nervus vagus and this nerve is responsible for regulating your blood pressure levels as well as several other impor-tant functions in the body. In 2005, a study was done in which people who suffer from hy-pertension were given ten ten-minute massag-es over the course of several weeks–the study found that they had a significant drop in their high blood pressure levels.

It is doable to give yourself a massage as well. A lot of people think that a massage should be done by someone else but that simply is not true. You don’t have to be able to massage a

specific ache point as long as you can mas-sage close to it. One example is that people who suffer from conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome can greatly benefit from giving their arms a fifteen minute massage a few times each week.

There are many benefits to getting regular massages. Many individuals realize that it can be a relaxing experience but it can help treat various medical conditions too. Be aware that there isn’t any one kind of massage that is bet-ter than the other. As long as you are using adequate pressure to make indentations on the skin you are massaging then you are giving (or getting) a relaxing massage. So why don’t you try it out for yourself and reap some of the benefits?
