eration of Republican Women's Convention in Louis-ville, KY. Our fundraiser for Education, Conservatives Cook, was a huge success. We started our PAC. We won so many Arizona Federation of Republican Women awards, I don't have the room to list them all....in short, we worked as a team and were successful. I'm looking forward to being your Outreach/ Communi-ty Service Chair for the next few years, you won't get rid of me yet!!! Thank you again, from the bottom of my heart, for al-lowing me the honor of representing the BEST CLUB and group of ladies in Arizona!!! Lacey is nickering for her treats....off to the barn!

Thoughts From The Saddle… by Joan Lang, Palo Verde Republican Women President
Page 2 President’s Message
This this will be the last time I get to 'muse' from my saddle, I would like to take a few minutes to re-flect upon the last five years. Representing Palo Verde RW has been one of the most rewarding times of my life! I have met so many people, people I never in my wildest dreams thought I would ever be in the same room with,
much less have a chance to speak with, too! I have made many new friends as well. Being part of the his-tory of this Club is something I will always cherish. Our Club grew tremendously. Five years ago we had a membership of about 57. Today it's 138, that's over a 200 percent increase! We were able to accomplish this with the hard work and dedication of your Executive Board and your committee chairs. I have been blessed to have had the most fantastic board ever! I never could have done any of the many things we accom-plished without 'my posse'! So, what all did Palo Verde RW do these last five years? To name a few: we were named the "Best Re-publican Club in Arizona", we brought home the most awards of any club nationwide after the National Fed-

Our 2016 Membership Drive Is Going
On Now!! At our December meeting, plan on re-
newing your membership for the 2016 year. Annual
dues are still $30 for full membership. If you are a
member of another Republican Women’s club, but
want to become an associate member of our award
winning club, annual dues are $25. For other member
categories, please see page 19 of this newsletter.
voy from the El Salvador Consulate whose members came and
shared many highlights of Albert’s life in El Salvador.
Albert was buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona.
On a personal note, I want to tell you what Albert was to me and
many of us in this club.
He always came to our Palo Verde RW meetings and events to sup-
port and encourage all of us. He was a delightful
man, always smiling. We all cherish his memory
and honor his impact on our country as well up-
on many of us.
He always encouraged all of us to strive for a
better nation and a better Republican party.
So now I have the very high honor of presenting
our award to whom I hope is a very surprised
Anita Rodriguez. Anita, please come forward.
This award is presented to you in honor of your
dedication to Palo Verde RW and for your unfail-
ing life-long service to our country’s ideals and
for your service to the Republican party.
This woman has served our club twice as presi-
dent. She has been an invaluable advisor to so many of us. She has
been the regional director for the Arizona Republican Women and
she has held many committee and board positions for Palo Verde
RW, currently our committee chair of Voter Registration. In your
roster, she is listed as a Palo Verde RW Member Emeritus. Anita
has been a member of our club probably longer than anyone else
here.
Most importantly, Anita was married to a dear Patriot for whom
this award is named.
John Wayne was once quoted as saying: “Courage is being scared
to death but saddling up anyway.” Albert and Anita may not have
been scared to death but they set a supreme example for all of us
to “Saddle up anyway.”
Congratulations Anita… We love you and we loved Albert as well.
Anita Rodriquez Received the First Annual Colonel Albert F. Rodriguez Award
Page 3
As delivered by Carol Peters at our November meeting...
Thanksgiving is a day when we pause to give thanks for the things
we have. Veterans day is a day when we pause to give thanks to
the people who fought for the things we have.
In light of our veterans and their service, we are presenting today
a very special award to a very special member of our club.
This award is entitled the Colonel Albert F.
Rodriguez Patriotism Award. Before we pre-
sent this ward to our recipient, I wanted to
share with you something of Albert Rodri-
guez’s life story.
Colonel Rodríguez was born in 1928 and died
January 7th, 2013. Albert served our country
for over 35 years. During that time, he was
awarded the Silver Star and two Purple
Hearts for his service in Vietnam where he
was in country from 1964 to 1969.
Colonel Rodriguez was wounded twice and
brought down four times in his helicopter by
enemy fire. His unit was the 7th of the First Air
Cavalry.
After the war, Albert served as the Army Defense Attaché to El
Salvador. During his duty in El Salvador, he rescued 200 Salvadori-
ans and 25 Americans held hostage by Leftist groups.
During his years of service to our country, Albert was awarded 68
medals and eight foreign medals from El Salvador, Argentina and
Japan.
His dedication to his country not only included military service
but public duty as Mayor of Douglas, Arizona from 1978 to 1980.
Additionally, Colonel Rodriguez was involved with the American
Red Cross, St. Vincent De Paul, the American Legion, the Military
Officers Association, the Distinguished Flying Cross Society and he
was the driving force in forming a Police Boys Club in Douglas,
this is just to name a few of the many things Albert was a part of.
On January 14th, 2013 Colonel Rodriguez’s funeral was held and
many of us had the honor of being there. There was even an en-
Anita Rodriguez holding her award.

it on your calendar next year! You’re in for a treat! It’s the largest Thanksgiving Day parade in the state. And if you go, you
may be the lucky recipient of a Honey Bun distributed every year by CD 6 Congressman David Schweikert. It’s an annual

Enjoy the Holiday Season, There Will Be Plenty of National and Local Campaigns to Decide Upon
The Presidential Preference Primary in March and the General Election Primary in August will provide many choices. Let’s all just not allow the choices to divide us. We will be informed and rationale because we are Re-publicans. Leave the divisive, visceral, and emotional to the Dems; it suits them best. When it’s all over we will come back together to win. We’ve waited far too agonizingly long to let victory get away because we didn’t get our first choice. I will be including Scottsdale and State information with the RNC Daily Reads. There will be at least two mayoral candidates and three council candidates. Probably more running. More on that next month. Petitions will also be back from the North Pole. If you are going to be out of town for any of the three election dates you need to contact the Maricopa County Recorder, be sure to include your voter registration number in the letter. Details next month.
Enjoy the Season- Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year.

Our Community Service Projects have been quite successful in 2015. We have focused on helping Veterans, Homeless/Poor and the African-American Community.
We donated over $5,000 to build a Fisher House in Tucson and then attended the Groundbreaking Ceremony in May. This facility will house the families of wounded active duty servicemen and women and veter-ans who are undergoing treatment at the Veteran’s Hospital there. We purchased 181 wreaths to participate in Wreaths Across America. Many members attended the wreath-laying ceremony at Arizona’s Na-tional Cemetery in December and then participated in laying the wreaths on veteran’s graves. It is a special honor to place a wreath on Col. Albert Rodriguez’s grave, husband of member Anita.
We donated to Family Promise of Greater Phoenix, an emergency shel-ter for homeless families, who provide shelter, food, clothing, and the support of a caring community to meet the basic needs of homeless families with children. Palo Verde provided donuts to the Cardboard City Event. We provided numerous meals (Pizza Parties) for families in the program as well as food and Christmas gifts. Another charity we support is Shoebox Ministries. We donated purses filled with toiletries for homeless children to give their mothers on Mother’s Day. We gave hundreds of pairs of socks to help keep their feet warm. We also do-nated food at Thanksgiving to St. Mary’s Food Bank.
In trying to make inroads into the Afro-American Community, we be-gan attending Bethesda Community Baptist Church a couple of years ago. With the help of Dr. C.T. Wright and Pastor James Preston, we determined the children needed help with reading skills. We decided to establish a library at the church and have donated over 600 books for grades K-6 plus some adult books. We are holding “Reading Par-ties” one Saturday a month from 11-1. We read to the children, have an art activity, feed them pizza, juice and cookies, and then have them check out four books each to take home and READ. We are strongly encouraging the parents to read to their children and with them for a half hour every day. Our goal is to help the children enjoy reading and improve their AzMerit Test scores.
Our Community Service Projects show how CARING our Palo Verde women are! We encourage all our women to be involved.
Fondly,
Jan Photos on this page and the next are from our Reading Party held at Bethesda Baptist Community Church in Phoenix on November 21.

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS,
HE LIVED ALL ALONE,
IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF
PLASTER AND STONE.
I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY
WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE,
AND TO SEE JUST WHO
IN THIS HOME DID LIVE.
I LOOKED ALL ABOUT,
A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE,
NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS,
NOT EVEN A TREE.
NO STOCKING BY MANTLE,
JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND,
ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES
OF FAR DISTANT LANDS.
WITH MEDALS AND BADGES,
AWARDS OF ALL KINDS,
A SOBER THOUGHT
CAME THROUGH MY MIND.
FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT,
IT WAS DARK AND DREARY,
I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER,
ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY.
THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING,
SILENT, ALONE,
CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR
IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME.
THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE,
THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER,
NOT HOW I PICTURED
A UNITED STATES SOLDIER.
WAS THIS THE HERO
OF WHOM I’D JUST READ?
CURLED UP ON A PONCHO,
THE FLOOR FOR A BED?
I REALIZED THE FAMILIES
THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT,
OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS
WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT.
SOON ROUND THE WORLD,
THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY,
AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE
A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY.
THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM
EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR,
BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS,
LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.
I COULDN’T HELP WONDER
HOW MANY LAY ALONE,
ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE
IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME.
THE VERY THOUGHT
BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE,
I DROPPED TO MY KNEES
AND STARTED TO CRY.
THE SOLDIER AWAKENED
AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE,
“SANTA DON’T CRY,
THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE;
I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM,
I DON’T ASK FOR MORE,
MY LIFE IS MY GOD,
MY! COUNTRY, MY CORPS.”
THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER
AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP,
I COULDN’T CONTROL IT,
I CONTINUED TO WEEP.
I WEPT FOR HOURS,
SO SILENT AND STILL
AND WE BOTH SHIVERED
FROM THE COLD NIGHT’S CHILL.
I DIDN’T WANT TO LEAVE
ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT,
THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR
SO WILLING TO FIGHT.
THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER,
WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE,
WHISPERED, “CARRY ON SANTA,
IT’S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE.”
ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH,
AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.
“MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND!
AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT.”

It is December and we will be cele-
brating Christmas and Hanukkah. How
fortunate we are! However, there are
some families that don’t have what we
do. Please go to your pantry and see
what you have that you can do-
nate. Please bring a grocery bag full of
canned goods to our December
meeting! They will be so thankful and
this will make a better holiday for you.
