Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Path of Discipleship

Dear People and Friends of Saint Joseph’s, Today’s gospel presents a challenging question for Faith,

“What must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus teaches that our successes and wealth can, strangely enough, be obstacles to faith and eternal life. ‘Money or Eternal Life?’ is a proposition so radical to Western society that many try to re-interpret it. Others not only ignore this truth, but twist around the Scrip-tures to create a ‘Gospel of Prosperity,’ that has very little to do with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Christ’s words emphasize first that eternal life, salvation,

comes only from God, because “For human beings it is impos-sible.” Secondly, Jesus makes it abundantly clear that material things—money, wealth, possessions—pose a threat and dis-traction to the real priority, which is our eternal relationship with God. A key detail in this passage, which clarifies the pur-pose of money and wealth, is that the man is to sell his pos-sessions and give the money to the poor. All that we have is for service, not for increased selfishness.

As we strive at St. Joseph’s to be intentional disciples,

embracing fully our walk with the Lord, every aspect of our lives is transformed. Two weeks ago I wrote about the work of evangelization that we are undertaking anew as a result of the listening sessions that began last fall and have continued through the spring and summer. Besides yielding a future, comprehensive plan to evangelize, this process is already benefitting the parish:

Being intentional disciples of the Lord Jesus has been placed front & center in our parish life thru discussions, homilies, bulletin letters, and the newsletter.

A wide array of parishioners have been engaged in this parish process of consultation.

Appreciation has grown among parishioners and staff re-garding our unique qualities and strengths as a parish.

Awareness has increased of issues and concerns that need to be addressed, some of which are already in proc-ess.

Our updated parish website is now more engaging and more technologically versatile.

Social media—Facebook—is now utilized as a means to communicate more widely about the faith and the parish. So as a Catholic community, we are moving forward with

the help of a strategic evangelization plan, and the insights gleaned from all the discussions that have occurred. In this way, St. Joseph’s family will be living more fully the mission we have as the Church – to evangelize by word and deed!

In the Love of Christ,

Fr. Allan F. Wolfe
