MEETING OF THE CONREGATION

Sunday, 15 June Immediately following the liturgy.

We will receive the Annual Report and elect members to the Congregation Council.

St. Mark’s Supports World Hunger

Through aluminum can recycling, Lenten coin boxes, and a Buck-A-Chick sale, we contributed almost $400 to ELCA World Hunger programs during the Lenten/Easter season. Each trip to the recycling center yields between $30 and $40. Coin boxes brought in more than $250 and the Buck-A-Chick sale more than $100.

Buck-A-Chick is part of the ELCA’s Good Gifts Program. Little chickens can do a lot of good in the fight against hunger and poverty. Their eggs make nutritious, protein-rich meals, and can be sold at the marketplace for extra income.

We thank all who contributed. Special thanks to Alex, Oliver, and Alexander, and their teacher, Nancy DeBell, for their part in the success of Buck-A-Chick!

The Road Traveled- A Benefit for Moveable Feast New Wave Singers will end our 2013-2014 concert season with a world premiere: Nathan Hall's moving "I Am in Love with the World", based on the words and life of author Maurice Sendak. The second half of our program will continue the theme of journeys, homecomings, and finding our way in the world. Please travel along with us! And help us give back to the community by supporting Moveable Feast, which has been bringing food, hope, and dignity to people

suffering from HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other debilitating illnesses for over 20 years. 50% of our ticket sales from The Road Traveled will support this important organization! Thursday Evenings─ Thursday, 26 June will mark the last Thursday evening Eucharist and Dinner for the

summer months. Our Thursday schedule will resume on 11 September with Eucharist and Dinner. However…two special days will be observed this summer, please note the dates. Tuesday, 22 July, Feast of Mary Magdalene.* Thursday, 14 August, eve of the Feast of Mary, Mother of Our Lord. The plan is to celebrate the Eucharist at 6:30 PM and to have a cookout following on those evenings. We hope that a number of persons will turn out to celebrate these “summer” feast days! *Please note this is a Tuesday! THE ACME CORPORATION PRESENTS PETER HANDKE’S

The Acme Corporation, Baltimore’s award-winning theatre ensemble, will present Kaspar by Peter Handke, June 5 though June 20 at The Great Hall of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 1900 St. Paul Street. Handke’s 1967 drama follows the progression of one girl’s first exposure to language and media and the subsequent fallout. The play, which was recognized as “the play of the decae” when it was originally performed in Europe, is loosely based on the story of Kaspar Hauser, the boy who was raised without language. However Handke acknowledges that the play “does not show how IT REALLY IS, or REALLY WAS with Kaspar…it shows how a person can be made to speak through speaking.” The Acme Corporation’s production explores how contemporary technology has transformed how we communicate with one another. As director Lola B. Pierson puts is, “we are updating the story bynot only asking the question, ‘What does it mean to learn how to speak?’ but also ‘How do we define language in a time when means of communication care constantly evolving/’” Through an intense multimedia approach using video, sound, and internet and cellphone technology (audience members will be required to keep their phones on), the Acme Corporation expands on Handke’s idea that “The play could be called speech torutre” and puts it in a contemporary context. Kaspar will be directed by Acme co-artistic director, Lola B. Pierson and features Acme compnay member Sophie Hinderberger in the title role. It also features performances from Acme company member Naomi Kline, as well as Sam Nelson, and Rena Brault. Choreography is by Clarissa Gregory, a member of the Baltimore mordern dance group, Effervescent Collective. Scenic design is by Emona Stoykova, lighting and sound by Acme company members Eric Nightengale and Stephen Nunns, and video work is by Alan Resnick, Jordan Card, Meredith Moore, Greg Towle and others. Tickets are $15 per person, and all performnces begin at 8 PM.
