Mansfield Herald February 15, 1887. "Last Saturday Gail Roberts, assisted by a fewfriends, removed eight bodies from the Wolford graveyard and placed them in the Windsorcemetery. They were all relatives of Mother Roberts by the names of Dills and Homes. Theact was certainly a commendable one and we speak of it with pardonable pride."

    OBITUARIES

oldest pioneer in the state. She was born in Pennsylvania in 1797. 'With her father she moved to Columbiana County

in this state in 1804, and in 1814 they removed to what is now Richland County, threemiles north of Ashland, in Orange Township, which was a howling wilderness at that time.

Mrs. Swigart came from a long lived family. Her father, Jacob Young, died at the ageof 98, and her mother was 97 years of age at her death. Her grandfather Mason Young liveduntil he was 105 years of age. Mrs. Swigart was one of a family of twelve, and five ofher sisters are yet living. Mrs. Marks and Mrs. McKee of Lucas are among the five.

She heard the heart-rending news of the Copus and Zimmer mas~sacre a few days after the deed was committed; the surrender of Hull and the good news ofPerry's victory on Lake Erie. She often spoke of her cousin, Christian Fast, who was atUpper Sandusky when Gen. Crawford was burned at the stake.

Her father was in the Revolutionary War, and her grandfather was taken prisoner inthe French war and taken to Canada, where he was sold by the Indians to some Frenchman fortwo jugs of rum.

    THE VAN DORN FAMILY

The Van Dorn family came to America in 1642 from Doorn, Holland, settling first onLong Island, New York and later moving to New Jersey. Cornelius Van Dorn was the originalsettler coming to this country. His son, Died10f, who shortened the name to Doorn had ason named Cornelius, who also had a son, Cornelius. The second Cornelius had a son,Nicholas, who was born in 1724 in Monmouth County, New Jersey and fought in the Revolutio-nary War with the New Jersey Militia. One of the four sons of Nicholas was William, bornin Monmouth County, N.J. in 1764. This William reportedly fought in the RevolutionaryWar, though we do not have confirmation of this. William put the "Van" back in the name

The nine children of William and Mary Van Dorn were: Sarah (Sallie) who married TitusWatson; William, Jr., who married Esther Newberry (this is my line); John married EunicePhelps; Martha married Titus Watson after her sister, Sarah, died; Nicholas married Eliza-beth Romer; Cornelius married Mary Wilkinson; Elisha married Sarah Wilkinson; Deborahmarried James Downs; and Mary married Moffett.

William settled near the Lexington area, having acquired land before coming here. Both William, Sr., and his wife, Mary, are buried in Lexington Cemetery. He died in 1847and she in 1832.

William, Jr. and his wife Esther settled in Congress Township, which became a part ofMorrow County in 1848. They were early Richland County settlers, livingin Milton Township and later in Congress Township.

William Van Dorn, Jr. and his wife Esther had 10 children. Five of them remained inMorrow County. Sons Philo and Myron moved to Indiana in the late 1840's, along with Nath-aniel, though Nathaniel later moved farther West. • SHIELD AND BANNER - December 10, 1881

The 56th anniversary of the birth of Mrs. Aaron Quick, daughter of William Darling.

And it came to pass during the reign of William that a daughter was born in the Houseof William. Now the tents of William were pitched on the banks of the great river Mohicanand in the land of Worthington. When William entered his tent in the evening time, heraised the napkin and looked on the face of the infant daughter, his heart yearned towardthe babe and he made proclamation saying: "The child shall be called Catharine for it isa Darling babe," and moreover the babe grew and was fair to look upon, and when the childgrew and was a Darling young woman, Aaron, the carpenter, was on the house-top mending theroof, and as Catharine the Darling young woman passed that way, the heart of Aaron didmelt within him for love of the Darling. Then straightway Aaron, the carpenter, came downfrom the house top and followed after Catharine, the Darling, many days.

Then Aaron prevailed and Catharine, the Darling, was given to Aaron to wife. And itcame to pass in process of time that sons and daughters were given to Aaron and hisDarling wife: Franklin, Ellen, Benton, Hattie, Nettie and Thomas. And they all remain tothis day; but Benton is gathered to the fathers.

And it came to pass that Hattie and Nettie did put their heads together privately, and Aaron, their father with them. Then when the doors were closed, Hattie and Nettie madespeech before their father, Aaron, saying, "Now that our mother is growing old and herbirthday draweth near, let us, we pray, make a feast secretly for our mother, so that sheknow it not 'till they that are bidden have entered the tents of Aaron, our father. AndAaron consented to the maidens.

Then when all things were ready on the last day of the eleventh month (the same beingthe two score and sixteenth birthday of Catharine the wife of Aaron, the carpenter,) thesame being in the year one thousand four score and one, and in the second hour of thenight, behold the door of Aaron's tent was opened, and Daniel the tinner, and Robert, the

tbrother of Catharine, the wife of Aaron, the Carpenter, and Emanuel, the dealer in swine, entered the tent carrying a magnificent rocker that was beautiful to look upon and cost 20pieces of silver.

Then Samuel, the tinner, and Robert, the brother of Catharine, the wife of Aaron, and Emanuel, the dealer in swine, put the rocker on the floor of the tent of Aaron in thepresence of a multitude, two score and six in number, and placed Catharine, the wife ofAaron, thereon.

Then Pocock, the doctor, the wife of Aaron.

Catharine was speechless with surprise, for she knew nothing of the matter; onlyHattie and Nettie and Aaron. Then Charles, the captain of his hundred, had compassion forCatharine, the wife of Aaron, and did make speech for her, thanking"the four score andsix. When Mary and Catharine and Rebecca, the.sister-in-law of Catharine, the wife ofAaron, had laid their gifts at the feet of Catharine, behold Aaron stood in the tent doorand proclaimed, "Come to the banquet for behold the feast is now ready, and in this ordercome ye - the older first and the younger after." And the feast was beautiful to lookupon and sweet to the taste.

When all were seated, Farris, the priest, bowed histhe feast merrily on. None did hinder or compel; for so

About the middle hour of the night, the feast beingrose from the table and departed, each to his own tent.

  • A NEW OHIO GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY LIBRARY

The exciting news that Ohio Genealogical Society will build its new

library in Mansfield, adjacent to the present overflowing facility at 419

West Third Street, is cause for rejoicing! And it presents a challenge, too,

for all of us interested in Richland County, its genealogy and its history.

That challenge is fund-raising. All members of Richland County Genea-

logical Society are encouraged to make a donation to the library's building

fund to hasten its construction and to maintain its prestigious position as

the outstanding genealogical library it is.

At a general meeting of this society in May, members, realizing that

all of us cannot give significant sums to this building fund, voted to ask

members to make donations, however small, to this RCGS, earmarked for OGS

Library; then periodically the treasurer of RCGS will forward a check to OGS

for the sum of whatever funds have been donated up to that time. In this way,

no donor will be embarrassed because his gift is small. Small or not, the

donations will add up and each of us will have a part in the construction of

    the new library.

Please send your gift to Richland County Genealogical Society, P. O. Box

3154, Lexington, Ohio 44904, with the following form: JLY'

----------------------------------~ -I am enclosing my check in the amount of $ , payable to Richland County

Genealogical Society, to apply to the Ohio Genealogical Society Library Building

    Fund.
