READINGS, REFLECTIONS AND PRAYERS
SUNDAY READINGS IN A WORD
FIRST READING Isaiah 5:1-
7
Isaiah sang of his friend, “My friend had a vineyard on
a fertile hillside.” The vineyard of the Lord is the house
of Israel, and the people of Judah are God’s cherished
plant.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM 80:9, 12, 13-14,
15-16, 19-20
The vineyard of the Lord is the house of Israel.
SECOND READING Philippians 4:6-
9
Paul wrote, “Have no anxiety at all, but in everything,
by prayer and petition, … the God of peace will be with
you.” With thanksgiving, make your request known to
God.
GOSPEL READING Matthew 21:33-
43
PRAYER CORNER
Who can they be, God and master of the vineyard, the
tenants who have failed to produce the fruits of the
kingdom, rejecting your prophets, rejecting your Son?
Break our hardened hearts, pierce our self-righteous
souls, and reveal this parable; that laying aside our
judgement of others, we may attend to our own fidelity
in bearing fruit for your kingdom.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy
Spirit, God for ever and ever.
“It was the stone rejected by the builders that became
the keystone.” The kingdom of God belongs to those
who produce the fruits of love.
FOCUS
REFLECTION
“By the word of His power He gathered us out of all
lands, from one end of the earth to the other end of the
world, and made resurrection of our minds, and
remission of our sins, and taught us that we are
members one of another.” St. Anthony of Egypt

Catholic Bridges
We Catholics, have classically referred to our Pope, the Holy Father, as a “Pontiff”. If you ever have the opportunity to travel to Rome and visit the Vatican City there are references everywhere to the names of past Popes with the designation “Pontifex Maximus”, after their names. The word “Pontiff” is derived from the Latin word “Pontifex”, meaning builder of bridges. Classically the term was used in reference to the chief priest in Rome
The term is quite appropriate given the responsibility of the Pope to reach out to those who do not see Christ as Catholics do or who are alienated from Christ or who are rejected by other Christians. The Pope does not only try to keep order within our Catholic faith but he tries to build bridges to those who are not in our fold or who feel distant from us.
Our current Pope, Francis I, is particularly well known for his attempts to build bridges. His travels have always included overtures to non-Christians and to the poor and disenfranchised. For example, in his now famous trip to the Central African Republic in 2015, he visited refugees, Evangelical Christians and a Mosque. Pope Francis has also been a bridge builder to Catholics who feel set apart by our traditions, most notably divorced and remarried Catholics, as well as gay/lesbian Catholics.
Nevertheless, not everyone wants our Pope to be a bridge builder. Recently 62 Catholics from around the world, mostly academics, have published a statement accusing Pope Francis of heresy, specifically because of the encouragement he gave to Catholic priests that they give strong pastoral consideration to divorced and remarried Catholics who desire to return to the Holy Eucharist. At the same time Fr. James Martin, SJ, who has spoken at St. Charles Borromeo, was “uninvited” by a Catholic Seminary to give a talk in Washington, DC, because of his recently published book on Catholic bridges, titled “Building a Bridge: How the Catholic Church and the LGBT Community Can Enter into a Relationship of Respect, Compassion and Sensitivity.” An invitation to speak for Dr. M. Shawn Copeland, African American Catholic theologian at Boston College, was also revoked at Madonna University, because she similarly had tried to build bridges to disaffected Catholics.
This trend toward destroying our bridges and our bridge builders is not new. In all honesty, there have always been Catholics who are defensive and somewhat afraid of what can happen when bridges are built. They should never be allowed to define our Catholic way of life, however. Rather we are compelled by the Lord’s instruction in Matthew 28 to “make disciples of all nations.”

LECTURAS, REFLEXIONES Y ORACIONES
~ FR. GREGORY CHISHOLM , SJ ~
SEGUNDA LECTURA Filipenses 4:6
-9 El apóstol recomendó: “No se inquieten por nada;
LECTURA DEL EVANGELIO Mateo 21:33-43
rechazando a tus profetas, rechazando a tu Hijo?
Romper nuestros corazones endurecidos, perforar
nuestras almas auto-justo, y revelar esta parábola;
