Vol. 38, No. 52 December 27, 2020 The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph
From the Desk of Deacon Anthony Viola The Octave of Christ as— The Holy Family
T oday, we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family, within the Octave of Christmas. From Jesus’ adulthood, we can glimpse the prayer life He learned from His parents. He prayed the morn-ing offering of pious Jews (Mk 12:29-30). He prayed spontaneously. He took
me to pray alone. And, He also prayed with His friends. Jesus fasted and marked the holy days. Many of these habits were probably acquired from His family life in Nazareth. We know that work was important to Jesus’ family. In adulthood, He was called not just “Joseph’s son” but “the carpenter’s son.” Joseph was skilled in a trade that was highly regarded, and he trained Jesus in the same cra . We can conclude from Jesus’ preaching that Mary was industrious and frugal. It was likely, from her example, that Jesus drew many of His favorite stories: a woman finding just the right cloth to patch a piece of clothing, a woman se ng aside leaven for tomorrow’s baking, a widow searching her house for a lost coin. Hard work, struggling to pay the bills, taking long road trips, praying simple devo ons — all of this, we learn from the Gospels. We look to the family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph for inspira on and encouragement. They were a model family in which both parents worked hard, helped, understood and accepted each other, and took good care of their Child so that He might grow up not only in human knowledge but also as a Child of God. The Rite of Bap sm and The Catechism of the Catholic Church give the following advice to parents: “Parents have the first responsibility for the educa on of their children. They bear witness to this responsibility by crea ng a home where tenderness, forgiveness, respect, fidelity, and service
are the rule.” The Feast of the Holy Family reminds us that, as the basic unit of the universal Church, each of us and our families are called to holiness. In fact, Jesus Christ has ins tuted two Sacraments in His Church to help socie-ty become Holy: the Sacrament of Holy Orders and the Sacrament of Marriage. Through the Sacrament of Holy Orders (or The Priesthood), Jesus sanc fies the priest as well as his parish. Similarly, by the Sacrament of Marriage, Jesus sanc fies not only the spouses but also the en re family. The husband and wife a ain holiness when they discharge their du es faithfully, trus ng in God and drawing on the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. Families become holy when Christ Jesus is present within them. Jesus becomes truly present in the parish church through the Sacrifice of the Holy Mass.
Similarly, Jesus becomes truly present in a family when all the members live in the Chris an spirit of sacrifice. The homeless man or woman in the streets of our ci es, figh ng the cold and the snow, is part of our family. The drug addict, living in fear and loneliness, is a member of our family. The sick per-son, dying, alone, dirty and maybe even obnoxious, is a member of our family. The person si ng in the prison cell for whatever reason is also a child of God and, as such, is a member of our family. “What so ever you did for the least of my brethren … you did for me.” (Mt 25:40) Some families are strong in virtue, some struggle with basic communica ons. Some are faithful day in and day out, some are broken and deeply wound-ed. No ma er the case, know that God wants to enter more deeply into our family life just as it is … right now. Let us invite the Triune God to make our families a Holy Family.
“Some [ families] are faithf l day in
and day out, some are broken and deeply wounded...”

Nex Weekend’s Readings The Epiphany of the Lord, Year B
Reading I: Isaiah 60: 1-6 God radiates light inside the city, so dark-ness surrenders in Jerusalem. All na ons come together to rebuild the city, including people associated with Abraham. Reading II: Ephesians 3: 2-3a, 5-6 Paul’s great insight into the mystery of Christ is that He wills the Gen le na ons to be full par cipants in the Church. Its very founda on is based on Christ and the proph-ets and especially the Apostles. The Gospel: Ma hew 2:1-12 The magi were a group who did things like interpret dreams or work in astrology and magic. Later, tradi on made them kings. Above all, they represent the Gen le world coming to Christ. Their gi s have meaning: gold represents kingship; incense, divinity; and myrrh, suffering. Or they can be inter-preted as Virtue, Prayer, and Suffering.

An Act of Spirit al Communion My Jesus, I believe that You are present
in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things,
and I desire to receive You in my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You
sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already
there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

261. “What do I do when God feels distant?”
There are mes when God seems so close that we are filled with a glorious feeling of love. At other mes, God can seem so distant it’s as if He has turned His back. Although God lets this happen for our good, that distant feeling can be hard to bear.
Look for a cause. Some mes, we cause distance to crop up between us without even realizing it. We may have become overly-confident of our spiritual strength and yielded to tempta on. Or, we neglected prayer or Sunday Mass. Pray your way back. Distance can lead to discouragement, but don’t let that keep you from prayer. Reaching out to God is the surest way to find your way back. Enlist the help of the saints or the Blessed Mother. Meditate on what you know. Regularly repeat God’s promises of salva on, Jesus’ pledge of eternal love, memories of God’s past blessings, anything that reminds you of His love. Focus on these beau ful thoughts over and over. Seek Reconcilia on. A common cause for distance is unconfessed sin. Are you weighed down by a fault or sin you have avoided facing? Consider making a full Confession and seek the Sacrament regularly. Perform an act of penance, such as fas ng, to take the focus off yourself. Then you will find He has been beside you all along.

Our beau ful new Divine Mercy Chapel is now open in the Parish Center. Along its walls are these Sta ons of the Cross, hand painted and done in Talavera de la Reina, Spain. Each is a one-of-a-kind work of art and designed specifically for our Divine Mercy Chapel. They are available to honor or memorialize a loved one ($500 each). The Sta ons of the Cross are a 14-step Catholic
devo on that commemorates Jesus Christ's last day on Earth as a man. The devo ons, or sta ons, focus on specific events of His last day, beginning with His condemna on, and are commonly used as a mini pilgrimage as one moves from sta on to sta on, recalling and medita ng on Christ's last day. Just as physical exercise strengthens our bodies, spiritual exercise strengthens our faith. Personal prayer ideally flows from Sunday Mass and back toward it in a weekly cycle of prayer. Also, we can greatly enhance our experience of Mass if we are spiritually prepared each week. This comes when we read Sunday’s readings ahead of me and make this part of our personal prayer. Online, there is a useful website that can help you and your family or friends prepare each week for Sunday Mass: liturgy.slu.edu. On this site, you
will find links to Sunday’s readings, prayers, spiritual reflec ons, and interes ng explana ons all based on those readings. There is also a sec on that helps you pray with the music of the Mass. The material is designed for ordinary Catholics of all levels of understanding – the people in the pews. Please consider spending a few minutes each week with this website as part of your personal prayer. The site is completely free of charge, sponsored by the Center for Liturgy at Saint Louis University.
