The Mildmay Arms, Queen Camel, Re-opening!
Firstly, may we start by formally introducing ourselves
Ian, Debbie, Wayne and Karen.
May we also take this opportunity to thank everyone in the village who have
already been into the Mildmay Arms and for the very warm welcome and good
wishes we have received. We are a family run business and it is our intention to
restore both the building and most importantly, the reputation of the Mildmay
Arms to its former glories.
We are currently addressing historic problems, including the bowing wall and
gable end, a complete electrical rewire and full re-plumbing. The drains have
now been sorted out and a damp course is in place.
The Mildmay Arms is to remain a traditional village pub, offering good beers and
real ales, quality restaurant serving food for 7 days a week, excellent
accommodation, bed and breakfast and a good skittle alley – all of this with a
smile and always a warm welcome.
Our scheduled re-opening date is to be Friday 1st August and all being well, we
are on schedule for this date. We look forward to welcoming our many friends,
both old and new, to what we believe will be exciting new times for the village
and the pub. If anyone is interested, or wants to see the progress of your pub,
please free to drop in as one of the family is always on site and will be pleased
to show you around and talk about our new plans.
Once again, many thanks for all the help and good wishes we have already
received and we look forward to welcoming everyone to the newly re-furbished
Mildmay Arms on 1 August.
Our kind regards to you all – Ian, Debbie, Wayne and Karen

VILLAGE AGENT
I have recently had contact from a local family about a harassing phone call they
received. The person who rang them said she was called Sarah Anderson. She knew their
name and address and said they had a problem with the license on the computer. She
asked them to open their computer up so that she could fix it. They refused to do this and
she became very aggressive and rang them back several times. She gave them her
phone number as 018001822372 but when they checked very wisely on 1471 the number
came up as 0016072315382. I have Googled this latter number and discovered it has
been reported many times as a fraudulent number for many different organisations. One
posting on Google from Microsoft says:
We are receiving currently increased feedback from Microsoft customers about calls
they receive from - supposedly - Microsoft support. The callers claim to be a Microsoft
representative or working for a Microsoft partner. However Microsoft is very clear:
•Microsoft does not send unsolicited e-mail or make unsolicited phone calls to request
personal or financial information.
•Microsoft does not make unsolicited phone calls to help you fix your computer.
•Communications claiming that you have won the “Microsoft Lottery” are fraudulent
because there is no Microsoft Lottery.
•Microsoft does not request credit card information to validate your copy of Windows,
Office etc.
•Microsoft does not send unsolicited communication about security updates.
Our local family were very wise in refusing to let her into their computer but found the
whole experience very unpleasant. Please be aware that this could happen to you too
and refuse to have anyone go into your computer unless you know they are bone fide.
One of my colleagues has also been contacted and told by someone she knows in her
villages who has been contacted by a company calling themselves Telephone
Protection Management, offering to stop nuisance/bogus phone calls, for a fee
amounting to anything from £74.99 to £84.99.She has traced this back to a fraudulent
number so again please be aware and do not allow yourselves to be victims of fraud.

Latest from 3rd Sparkford Beavers, Cubs and Scouts
Community Week – Sparkford Scouts
It’s been a busy time for our Beavers, Cubs & Scouts – with lighter evenings helping us
get out and about doing useful things in our local communities. Scouts Community
Week took place in June and we have been cleaning, clearing and tidying in local parks,
streets, paths and churchyards. This has taught our youngsters new skills and
responsibilities, and helped with much needed projects in local villages. Beavers, cubs
and scouts are all working towards badges for community skills, outdoor activities and
more.
Our youngsters have also been working to raise funds towards our new equipment
target – including a very successful session helping customers at Morrison’s packing
shopping bags. If you would like to get involved or contribute we would love to hear
from you –
Please contact Helen Wooldridge on [email protected] or 01963 440801.
Next on our agenda – Summer Camp! We can’t wait!

Your watch had a very pleasant evening BBQ’ing on the 14th June with over 50
people at Weston Bampfylde village hall. Although numbers where slightly down
on last year, we in fact made a greater profit. In all £314.75 which has been
divided between the playing field and the NHW. Many thanks to everyone who
was involved and those that came.
Generally all has been quiet and we survived the Pilton festival with no
problems. The main concern at the moment is the traffic which casts a blight
over the whole village. There is literally no control over the speed of vehicles and
the inconsiderate behaviour of many drivers is unbelievable. All in all a situation
which could be sorted out but remains unresolved.
There are still incidents where people have been contacted by phone and
have quite willingly given the caller their personal bank details. It is imperative
that we never give personal details over the phone. If you have any suspicious
calls contact the police on 101 at once.
The Christmas get together will be on Friday 5th December at 7:30pm in the
Village hall. Please make a note of the date & come

We are now finished our summer term. We have been out on a trip to see some animals
at Hope Animal Centre which was enjoyed by Staff, Parents, & Children. We were
blessed with great weather for our sports day that was held in the sunshine on the cricket
fields. We have said goodbye to our leavers and held a presentation on Monday 21st July
to the children whom where leaving later in the day we took them on our leavers trip.
We hope everyone has a great summer break. We will also be holding two open
mornings during the summer holidays.
Friday 25th July & Wednesday 27th August from 10:00am till 12:00pm
EVERYBODY Welcome!

Queen Camel Tuesday Group June 2014 Meeting
For our June meeting, the Tuesday Group had a return visit from Bob Ayres, on this
occasion, captivating us with the 'Livery Companies of London.' In his past life, Bob was a
policeman in London and his extensive knowledge and grasp of the history of that area
shines through on every talk he has given. This time he started with the background
history of 'the square mile,' filling in all the anomalies that have occurred during the 2000
odd years, as the livery companies developed and expanded, taking us through little
cameos and twists of fortune and bringing us up to date with the Lord Mayor's Show and
Banquet. His hour went by in a flash and we hope to book him again next year for
another, fascinating subject.
We now go into our 'Summer Recess' with the monthly meetings suspended until
September, when we will be told, 'Laughter, The Best Medicine.' However, we do have
our Annual trip in July, which this year is a trip to Dartington for Coffee and a spot of
'Retail Therapy' and then on to Buckfastleigh for lunch and a tour of the beautiful Abbey.
The Tuesday Group meets in the Queen Camel Memorial Hall on the first Tuesday of each
month, except August, at 10.00am. If you want any more information about our activities,
please call
Pat Champion on 01963 32264 or Marion Chapman on 01963 220741.

Bishop’s Message – August 2014
As I write this, the church is coming to the end of the Easter season. The readings that
have been part of our worship during these weeks have reminded us of the extraordinary
impact that the life, death and resurrection of Jesus had on individuals and communities.
The feast of Pentecost that follows is God’s prompt that we now have to live lives that
do the same. As one author puts it, ‘Jesus has to go as from the grave he had to rise. In
order to be everywhere, he must depart to live, not in one place, but in every human
heart.’
I was reflecting on this as I watched the vigil from Lichfield Cathedral in thanksgiving
for Stephen Sutton, the young man diagnosed with cancer at such a young age, and yet
in his short life, had made a huge impact on so many people.
A week or so later, Maya Angelou, the African American author, poet and civil rights
activist also died. She was one of the most renowned and influential voices of our time
and her poem, ‘When I say I’m a Christian’, is worth our attention in this season of
Pentecost as we seek to live more Christ like lives.
‘When I say I’m a Christian, I’m not shouting, “I’m clean living”, I’m whispering, “I
was lost, now I’m found and forgiven.”
‘When I say I’m a Christian’, I don’t speak of this with pride. I’m confessing that I
stumble and need Christ to be my guide.’
‘When I say I’m a Christian, I’m not trying to be strong. I’m professing that I’m weak
and need his strength to carry on.’
‘When I say I’m a Christian, I’m not claiming to be perfect. My flaws are far too
visible, but God believes I’m worth it.’
When I say I’m a Christian, I’m not bragging of success, I’m admitting I have failed and
need God to clean my mess.’
‘When I say I’m a Christian, I’m not holier than thou. I’m just a simple sinner who
received God’s good grace, somehow.’

My dear Friends
The holiday season is just getting under way.
If you are fortunate to be going on holiday this summer I hope you enjoy the rest and relaxation. Rest is partly what holidays
are about but it is a time to explore or do something different.
The word holiday comes from the old days – holy day. In those times there were many holy days when it was
permitted not to work all the day long.
The idea of rest goes right back to Bible times when the Sabbath day was to be a day of rest in line with the idea that
God Himself needed a rest after creating the world! I think we could translate our rest times as times to savour all
that is good and beautiful around us. We don’t need to journey far to be able to do this. You will have ideas of your own as to
how to enjoy the world about you locally.
Last year I decided to visit one of our local villages and enjoyed taking some photos of different features. It really made me look
and I discovered things I hadn’t noticed before.
From a health point of view we are encouraged to do things which take the stress out of our lives and this I think is a simple
one.
Our body, mind and spirit are so interrelated it is important to care for ourselves so we might be able to care for others.
Speaking of caring for others there are a number of people locally who care for a loved one 24/7. I wonder how we can
care for them? Have you any practical ideas which might be helpful?
With love and prayers Yolanda
