Rev. Joseph Bejgrowicz
From the Desk theParish Leade hip CouncilGrowing up, I was lucky enough to experience the joy of grow-ing a garden – one that we shared responsibility for and which yielded what we thought was a bounty beyond belief. My father would plant rows of corn, tomatoes, green beans, lettuce, Swiss chard and radishes every year on the weekend closest to the end of May. By the time fall rolled around, we had harvested and eaten or canned everything in the garden. All that was left were a few ragged remnants of the crop, and the stumps of the corn stalks. It was sad! BUT we knew that the following year, we would have another opportunity to grow and care for a new crop: something to look forward to after a cold Connecticut winter! As I look out at my garden this week, following the temperature dip, I see the same withered plants, this time fl owers that gave us much pleasure and hung on for much longer than I expected. I wondered how I would feel if I knew that there would be no “next season”; if the promise of fertile soil in which to plant was dashed by some disaster – a devastating fi re or storm that destroyed the plants, the soil, and my home. Would I give up? Would I wait for an answer from someone who could help? Would I work for a solution? In the readings for this weekend, the prophet Malachi warns that a day is coming when all the proud and all evildoers will be stubble…set on fi re, leaving neither root nor branch. In the Gospel, we hear Jesus warn of “the days to come” when wars and insurrection, earthquakes, famines and plagues would occur from place to place. The disciples ask what they should do to prepare. He warns them not to prepare a defense to present to those who accuse them just because they are His followers. “By their steadfastness, they will be saved.” If I knew that the end was coming, would I be patient enough not to “prepare”? Would I just wait? I think the term “steadfast-ness” is a clue. There is a place of action somewhere between just waiting and actually setting up a defense. If the followers of Jesus are to be known by their ‘holding to the course”, then it is in acting like Jesus that their perseverance will be evident. Our actions will speak louder than our words. We should work to present ourselves as models for those who know us and those we have yet to meet, just as did Jesus, our model. We know what to do - we just need to do it.In the Parish Survey, many indicated a desire to work on teams that support both the parish family and the community in which we live. The Parish Leadership Council is working on those requests and how we can offer them as part of existing ministries or new ministries. For those looking to help those among us to hear the Words of God, and to bring them to others, we are looking for more Lectors and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHCs) right now. If you are interested, please contact me through the Parish Offi ce. We will be offering instructions for both during November and December.By our perseverance, we will secure our lives!
