3 513 St. Catharine—St. Margaret Parish Family

As I read the reports (and reactions) to Pope Francis’s

Apostolic Exhortation “The Joy of Love” over the

past week, I was reminded again of a statement that

Francis made shortly after he was elected Pope. At

that time, he said: “Jorge, do not change! Continue

to be your self, because to change at your age would

be ridiculous.”

Early on in his Pontificate he pledged himself “to

open doors a little more,“ and by his lifestyle as well

as his words, he has committed himself to make this

happen. He never espoused, or set out to change any

long held doctrine of the church, although some

Catholics have seen his statements, and this

document, as a capitulation to the pressures and the

values of the modern world.

Even before he wrote “The Joy of Love,” Francis

acknowledged this and commented onetime; “There

are always fears, but it is sometimes because they do

not read the texts, or they read news in a paper, or

article and they do not go to the source and read the

original words.” He used the example of

homosexual marriage, when it was raised at the

Synod preceding his latest document, giving rise to a

lot of wild speculation. He pointed out after the

Synod, “no one spoke about homosexual marriage

in the Synod. What we spoke about was how a

family that has a homosexual son or daughter, how

can they educate him/her, how can they raise him/

her; how can this family be helped to move forward

in this situation which is a little unprecedented? So

in the Synod they spoke about the family and about

homosexual persons in relation to their families

because it is a situation that we encounter many

times in the confessional”.

He went on to add: “we have to see how to help this

father, or this mother who accompanies this son or

daughter.”

At that time he also spoke on the matter of the

divorced and remarried., and said that at the Synod,

as in this document, what was done was that we

raised the question. “What can we do for them?

What door can be opened?” He added that

Communion alone was not a solution. “The solution

is integration. They are not excommunicated; that

is true but they cannot be godparents at baptism,

they cannot read the readings at Mass, they cannot

give out communion at Mass, they cannot teach

catechism. They cannot do seven things I have

listed here. Stop! If I take account of this it seems

to me, they are excommunicated de facto.”

“So, the question then” he said “is to open the doors

a little more.”

And now we have the image of Pope Francis

speaking in simpler words that his predecessors;

living simply; reminding us that Jesus had a

particular love for the poor, and telling us all,

whatever our situation or our weaknesses, to cheer

up, because God loves us. He tells us not to judge,

not to condemn. And in “The Joy of Love” he

reminds us:

In very clear terms:

that priests and bishops should not throw ideals at

people like stones but be aware of, and accepting of

mitigating factors, especially in dealing with marriage

and family life; the primacy of individual conscience

has to be respected; people in non traditional

marriages, including single parent marriages need to

be offered “understanding, comfort and

acceptance.”

Above and beyond all else, Pope Francis brings a

very strong message of respect for the individual into

the heart of the church, and makes it easier to sing

and mean it, in the words of the hymn we frequently

sing “all are welcome”: the net of belonging extends

to everyone.

Author Visits St. Catharine School Students New York Times best-selling author, Nancy Kurlick, visited SCS students in grades K - 4. She read excerpts from her books, answered questions about being a writer and signed books for the students. BookTowne in Manasquan arranged for the visit with Mrs. Anna Patane, who oversees the Media Center at SCS. Mrs. Kurlick told the students that she writes funny books for kids because she wants them to laugh out loud and to love reading as much as she does. While listening to her stories, there was definitely plenty of giggles to go around!

On the Lighter Side…… While attending a Pre-Cana session

before they got married, Walter and his

future wife, Ann, heard the instructor

explain: “It is essential that husbands

and wives know the little things that

are important to each other”.

The instructor then addressed the men:

“Guys, can you name your future

wife’s favorite flower?” Walter leaned over and touched his

fiancé’s arm gently, and whispered:

“Gold Medal, All Purpose, isn’t it?”

Thus began Walter’s life of celibacy.
