Fuji Xerox seeks to demonstrate and promote compliance with government recognised global social and environmental standards, and to identify and control the sources of the raw materials used in the manufacture of our paper products.

Fuji Xerox SustainablePaper Sourcing Standards

We believe it is in the interests of our industry to demonstrate responsible stewardship through the full product life cycle in order to verify paper as a socially and environmentally responsible communication medium. The Fuji Xerox Australia sustainable paper sourcing standards is one tool to achieve this objective.

We have established a set of minimum requirements for our paper suppliers across key environmental, social

and governance criteria, as well as a path for continuous improvement in line with best practice. We assess compliance with these standards annually and we work with non-government organisations to identify and escalate key issues of stakeholder concern. If areas of non-compliance are found our approach is to work with progressive suppliers to ensure standards are met. However if adequate progress is not made in a specified timeframe the supplier relationship will cease.

Paper is part of everyday life, with physical properties and conveniences that satisfy a communication need not always filled by digital media. In fact, the use of office paper has increased rather than decreased over the last several decades as a result of the ‘information revolution’.

The paper life cycleThe life cycle a single piece of paper follows is extraordinary, from extraction of materials to the cleaning, rolling and heating process, to the final finished paper product being transported to your company. Speak with your Fuji Xerox Sales Representative for further information on any of the below processes.

Managing paper life cycle impacts

The Life Cycle of Paper

Papermaking is a highly industrialised process and haspotential environmental impacts to our world’s forests, air, water, and soils. It is therefore important to understand and mitigate the environmental impacts of paper use acrossits life cycle – from raw material acquisition, manufacturedistribution, use and disposal.

Our goal at Fuji Xerox is to work with paper manufacturers in supporting the development of asustainable paper cycle. This means ensuring that our paper is derived from paper mills with sustainablymanaged fibre sources and manufacturing processeswith reduced environmental impacts.

The paper supply chainChain of Custody follows the legal and physical ownership of wood and paper products through the supply chain and ensures that at every stage, agreed systems and processes are in place to guarantee the integrity of the certified products. That means that any organisation that takes legal ownership of a product and wants to pass-on the right to make a claim about the product needs to hold a Chain of Custody certificate. Put another way, anyone who buys product from a supplier that does not have a Chain of Custody cannot make a claim about the product or label the product. This applies to every type of organisation in the supply chain: manufacturers, wholesalers, merchants and printers. Merchants handling certified paper need to be certified to verify that the certified material can be tracked through their inventory and stock systems. Similarly, printers need to be certified.

The Paper Chain of Custody

Chain of Custody is the path taken by the raw materials harvested from a certified forest all the way through processing, production, distribution and printing until it is a final product to be sold to an end customer.

The Chain of Custody (CoC) scheme for forests is a process of verifying that the origin of the certified wood and timber products is indeed from forests for which there is some form of forest management certification.

In order to provide the verification, careful tracking of the wood and timber products is required through all the links of the supply chain from the forest to the markets in which the timber or other wood based product carries the claim.

Understanding Our Paper Certifications

Carbon NeutralCarbon Neutral refers to a voluntary mechanism that seeks to achieve zero net greenhouse gas emissions from all activities. Carbon neutrality is normally achieved through a combination of reduction strategies e.g. energy efficiency and purchasing verified carbon offsets for all remaining unavoidable emissions so that zero net emissions can be accomplished.

FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council)FSC certification is internationally recognised as a rigorous environmental and social standard for responsible forest management. FSC certification is carried out by FSC accredited certification bodies (auditors). These are internationally accredited and managed by an independent accreditation body. FSC itself does not certify forest operations or manufacturers. This maintains FSC’s independence between its standards and requirements, and operations seeking certification.

NCOS (National Carbon Offset Standard)The Australian Government introduced the NCOS as a means of ensuring the environmental integrity of the carbon offsets and carbon neutral products available in the Australian market to build consumer confidence in the voluntary carbon market.

PEFC™ (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification)PEFC is an international, non-profit, non-governmental umbrella organisation for the assessment of and mutual recognition of national forest certification schemes developed in a multistakeholder process. These national schemes build upon the inter-governmental processes for the promotion of sustainable forest management, a series of on-going mechanisms supported by 149 governments in the world.

EU EcolabelThe EU Ecolabel helps you identify products and services that have a reduced environmental impact throughout their life cycle, from the extraction of raw material through to production, use and disposal.

Blue AngelThe Blue Angel (Der Blaue Engel) is a German certification for products and services that have environmentally friendly aspects. With its rigorous rules regarding raw materials and the use of chemicals as well as consideration of health and quality standards, the Blue Angel is a reliable guidepost for environmentally friendly paper.

Quality Runnability GuaranteeFor consistent quality and performance, all Fuji Xerox papers are tested and qualified by Fuji Xerox laboratories.
