Webber Middle School OCTOBER 2019
Principal’s Pen
It has been a great first month of the school
year. Students and staff have settled
into the flow of the school day. We have over
200 students participating in cross country,
football, and volleyball. Several clubs have
started as well. German Club, Debate Team,
Science Olympiad, and WAVE all have or will
be holding their initial meetings.
The magazine sale fundraiser has started. This
is the only fundraiser all students participate in
during the school year. The money is used to
purchase items that enhance
every student's experience. In the past, we have
used the money from the fundraiser to purchase
an additional outside basketball hoop,
tetherball stands, microwaves for the
lunchroom, an outdoor scoreboard, bike racks,
and water bottle filling stations. Also, this
money is used for teacher grants.
Teachers apply for grants to enhance their
curriculum or classrooms.
Webber held the first Panther Family Resource
Group (PFRG) meeting of the year on
Tuesday, September 10. The meeting was well
attended. We discussed the magazine sales, and
the structure of PFRG. The team will meet the
second Tuesday of every month for the
remainder of the year. The next PFRG meeting
is on Tuesday, October 9 starting at 5:00 pm in
the media center. If you would like to find out
more about Webber Middle School
PFRG please go to the following website:
https://webbernocopto.wixsite.com/panther
Back to School night early this month was
well attended. It was a fantastic opportunity for
parents to connect with their child’s teachers,
understand the classroom expectations,
homework, and the content that will be
covered. Thank you for investing in the
education of your child.
On October 17 from 3:30-7:30pm Webber will
host Parent Teacher Conferences. This event is
designed for parents to check on the academic
progress of their child. Due to the volume of
people that would like to visit
with teachers, we ask that these meetings last
no longer than ten minutes. Teachers will be
grouped by grade level in both gyms. We will
provide more details in an email as we get
closer to the event.
Thanks again for the great start. I look forward
to seeing families at Parent Teacher
Conferences.
Thanks,
Bryan Davis
Principal

Webber Science Bowl
Webber Science Bowl begins on October 10th
Science Bowl practice is beginning soon! Anyone interested in participating in Science Bowl this
year should attend our first practice after school on Thursday, October 10th in Mr. Petersen’s
room (C11). The practice will last until 4:00pm.
Practices will resume again on October 24th and will be every Thursday through the first week in
February. If you want to participate but are unable to make it to the meeting please see Mr.
Petersen after the meeting to receive important information.
What is Science Bowl?
Science Bowl is a nationwide academic competition that tests students’ knowledge in all areas of
science and mathematics. Middle and high school student teams from diverse backgrounds are
comprised of four students, one alternate, and a teacher who serves as an advisor and coach.
These teams face-off in a fast-paced question-and-answer format, being tested on a range of
science disciplines including biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy, and math. The
team that scores the most points across two 8 minute halves wins.
The Webber Science Bowl team was founded in 2014. Webber has had 10 place in the top 10 at
the state competition including two 4th place finishes. Each year the winner of the state
competition qualifies for the national competition in Washington, D.C.
Contact Mr. Petersen with any questions at [email protected].
If you are interested in the WEBBER SCIENCE FAIR, please contact
Erin Easterlund at [email protected], by October 10.

Webber Ice Cream Social
Mark your calendars for the Webber Ice Cream Social!
Thursday, November 5, approx. 8:30 – 9:15PM
Webber will be hosting an ice cream social after the Intermediate Concert to help raise
money for the band instrument repairs! All the money raised will be put toward the
repair costs of Webber owned instruments. Even if your student does not play a school
owned instrument, it takes Webber owned instruments to make up the band they play in.
Please consider attending and or donating!
(This is DIFFERENT from the Just Jazz fundraiser event in April; whereas that event in
April is to funnel money to all three Jazz ensembles at Webber to sustain the program,
this November ice cream social is for repair costs for instruments students use at
Webber for the band program at large.)
Ice cream will be $5 per person.
Chamber groups will provide live music during the event!
We need volunteers to:
help serve the ice cream
help solicit gift cards for a silent auction
help with set up and clean up

1:1 Laptop Best Practices
• Keep foods and liquids away from your laptop.
• Plug into a safe location (away from pets and younger siblings)
• Make sure plug gets full power all night - not in an outlet that
turns off with a light switch.
• Never set a computer on the ground. Many screens were cracked
accidently when left on the ground & then stepped on.
• Use a padded sleeve or padded laptop bag to protect your laptop.
• Please do not put stickers or skins on laptops.
• Leave your charger cord at home. If you use your computer for
school use (not streaming or games), the battery should last all day.
• If you bring your charger to school & lose it (or you lend it to someone and they don’t return
it), YOU will have to buy a replacement charger cord. Replacement charger cords cost $20.
• Please do not pull off keys! Any key damage can result in a keyboard replacement coast of
$20. If you have a loose key, or a key falls off, please bring your computer (and the key) to the
Media Center immediately for repair.
• If your computer gets damaged, it will need to be repaired. Depending on the damage,
repairs can take a couple of days to a couple of weeks.
Students – please be sure you are restarting your laptop AT SCHOOL at least once per week.
This allows updates to be installed to your student laptop. If you don’t restart your laptop
regularly, you may experience issues getting your laptop to work properly.

17th. If you finish your book BEFORE October 17th, please return it to the LMC Book return
bin.
• We do not assess overdue fines – however, lost or damaged books will need to be paid for or
replaced.
• Each student may check out two books at a time and two magazines at a time.
• The LMC has a laptop charging cart – if students forget to charge their laptop overnight, they
can leave it in the cart to charge.
• The Webber LMC is open on school days from 7:55 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Occasionally, it closes
early for a meeting. “Closing Early” signs will be posted the morning of the meeting.

October Count
October Count is a two-week snapshot that runs Wednesday, September 25th through
Wednesday, October 9th. It is used to determine how finances are distributed across the state.
The count consists of many parts, but the main components are as follows:
Headcount of enrolled students – To be counted, student’s enrollment date &
attendance must be on or before October 2nd. There are very limited cases where
exceptions allow students to be counted after October 2nd with adequate
documentation.
Students eligible for free/reduces-priced meals
Information on various sub-group populations
How much finding does PSD get from the state for each student?
Approximately $8,050 for each full-time student and approximately $4,025 for each half-time
student.
What do parents need to know about the importance of student attendance during this
period?
A student must establish attendance to be included in the count so it is very important students
are here during the 2 week count period. If the student is absent on the official count day,
October 2nd, attendance from the previous week and the next week are used to establish
attendance. Attendance = funding = teachers hired and classes offered. Please notify us if you
know your student may be absent during this timeframe.

Student Check Out Procedures
If you need to pull your student out for an appointment during the day
or pick them up early in the afternoon, please send them to the main
office in the morning with a note stating what time you will be picking
them up. We will give them a special pass to get out of class so they
can meet you in the main office. This will prevent us having to
interrupt class and you won’t have to wait for your student.
Counseling Corner
“Attention all Webber Middle School 8th grade students and parents: It’s time to Speak Up!
Webber Middle School, in collaboration with SAVA Center, is pleased to offer Speak Up!, an
educational sexual violence prevention program, to all 8th grade students this school year. This is
an opportunity limited to around 20-30 8th grade students for the year, and will be offered during
ELO. In this program, students will have the opportunity to discuss self-identity, healthy futures,
and positive relationships. Speak Up! explores how influences like media and gender stereotypes
affect our ability to form relationships, and identifies ways to support self-esteem and healthy
decision-making. If you have serious interest and would like more information, and to inquire
about enrollment, you may contact 8th grade Counselor Ana Lizar ([email protected]
970-488-7816) or Director of Prevention Education at SAVA Susannah Fulling-Smith
([email protected] 970-506-4059) as soon as possible, as the program will be starting
soon.”
