Washington Pilots Association Paine Field Chapter March 2019 President’s Message Important Washington State Legislation There are three House Bills in the Washington State Legislature that are important to our aviation community. I sent out a call to action regarding supporting these three bills by contacting your Washington State House Representatives and expressing your support. Hopefully many of you have taken this action by now. Detailed instructions were provided regarding how to identify your district representatives and contact them. Our State WPA calls to political action are infrequent but they have the potential of changing the future of aviation in Washington State for the better. Taking on the State WPA Membership Director Position My two year term as Washington Pilots Association VP West expires at the State General Membership at the Northwest Aviation Conference. By the time you read this I will be taking over the job of State WPA Membership Director. This is a job I have been doing for the better part of a year after our last Membership Director resigned due to moving out of Washington State. Some of my professional information technology skills learned at The Boeing Company have already been put to good use in this new job supporting our State WPA organization. Personal Commitment Flight Safety There have been number of aviation accidents around the Pacific Northwest in recent months, several with very tragic consequences. I am reminded of my personal commitment to aviation safety. I currently have about 3,200 hours of accident free flight accumulated over a 35 year period. Yet I do not take aviation safety for granted. A number of years ago I let my IFR currency expire. President’s Message Important Washington State LegislationThere are three House Bills in the Washington State Legislature that are important to our aviation community. the time but it meant that I would be flying only in VFR conditions. After I retired from Boeing I decided that I would start flying IFR again. So I took the time to get trained back up to IPC standards but this was just the beginning as I wanted to become a much better instrument pilot. So I spent a considerable amount of time learning my new Garmin GTN 650 navigator. Then I started taking the “IFR Mastery” series of courses from pilotworkshop.com. I have also been participating in the VMC/IMC FORUM which is held at Simulation Flight on the 4th Wednesday evening of each month. I highly recommend this forum. We all learn from George Futas and Bob Collins and each other’s experiences.

I encourage all of you to think about continuing your aviation education and training beyond the bare minimum that the FAA requires. We also need to think about risk management during every flight. Almost all of us who have been flying for a long time have lost a friend to an aviation accident. Let’s renew our commitment to aviation safety for the sake of our family, friends and ourselves.

Message from member Craig HoganI received some very sad news from WPA members Craig and Carla Hogan yesterday evening. Craig asked me to get his message to his fellow aviators into the next Paine Field Chapter newsletter. Those of you who are inclined to pray might say a prayer for Craig and Carla. Craig’s message to us follows. RJ

VMC/IMC FORUMS FOR 2019 Our WPA Paine Chapter and Simulation Flight are continuing to sponsor and hold monthly safety and education forum's on both IFR and VFR subjects. These forums are at no cost to pilots and most forums qualify for FAA Wings credits. Bob Collins, owner, is a Paine Chapter member.

Hi fellow pilots and WPA members,

Some of you were made aware that I was recently diagnosed with esophageal cancer at one of our Saturday morning breakfasts. Since then additional tests have revealed that the cancer has spread to the liver. This reduces my options, including surgery, as was the previous strategy. The University of Washington medical staff and doctors have been outstanding.

Carla and I have a lot of administrative tasks to accomplish. Right now we are taking each day at a time.

Some of you I know better that others, but we all share a unique bond of being aviators. I will always cherish the identity of being a pilot!

Membership Roundup As of February 14 we have a total of 186 members, 18 of which are brand new members to our chapter. I would like to personally welcome each of our new members to our chapter, and am looking forward to meeting you, and enjoying our wonderful hobby together. And as a reminder, spouses and partners of members, are also members. So in reality we could have around 350 members (just a WAG). If you do not have a Paine Field Member Badge shoot me an email or get a hold of me at the next meeting, and I will make one for you.

Now that we are (hopefully) at the tail end of the snow in Western Washington, we can start to look forward to the beginning of the 2019 flying season. And in that vein, we will be gathering together a committee soon lead by Jerry Barkley, to plan this seasons flying activities. So if you have an interest in participating in the planning contact Jerry.

Lately at the general meetings I have been passing out “Join Paine Field WPA” business cards, and have been encouraging everyone to get your pilot friends to join. Be sure to tell them of all the benefits afforded to them, such as the 15 cents a gallon fuel discount at Castle and Cook gas pumps at Paine Field, and Arlington Airport. And don’t forget the wonderful camaraderie at our social gatherings, and dinner meetings. Guest speakers, talking on varied topics of aviation. Fly outs to fun, and exiting places. And the added strength it gives our community as we advocate for aviation. Our Paine Field chapter already has the largest number of members in the state, and we are looking to make it even bigger.

Be sure to come to the general meetings, as I will be raffling off WPA memorabilia. And don’t miss the March 1st general meeting, as Jerry will be auctioning off a one-hour flight Northway Aviation's Cirrus SR20, donated by Jim Grant at Northway Aviation. Thanks Jim. All proceeds go to our Youth Aviation Scholarship Fund. WT
