There once was an oyster whose story I tell,That found some sand inside of his shell.

Just a small grain,But it gave him great painFor oysters have feelings Though they seem so plain

Which led him to sucha deplorable state?

Now did he berateThe workings of fate…

Did he curse the government?

Call for an election?

Protection for Oysters is Overdue

Have Rights Too!

And cry that the sea should have given him protection?

No! he said as he lay on the shelfSince I cannot remove it, I’ll try to improve it.

The years rolled along in their timeous way

And he came to his end on a lunch tray!

That small grain of sand that had bothered him so,

Was a beautiful pearl, all richly aglow!

This tale has a moral, for isn’t it grandWhat an oyster can do with a small grain of sand.

Think what you and I could do if we’d only begin

To improve those things… that get under our skin?
