ONE IN SPIRITDr. How’s discourse for the devastation made by Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) was one of the most important part of the program. Some of the awardees and expected guests were not able to attend as they are among the hundreds of thousands of people directly devastated by the typhoon. Her speech bares a tone of concern, with a prayer of hope that all will be well, and a tangible message that UHI shall provide its share of support.

WE ARE APPEALING TO ALL OUR FELLOW ADVOCATES to support the implementation of “BackToFarm,” a project for our displaced food producers in the province of Leyte, under the aegis of The Outstanding Farmers of the Philippines (TOFARM).

The devastation caused by super typhoon Yolanda has left hundreds of our farmers, fisher folks, and livestock raisers with nothing. While the farmers may have the land to till, they have no means to buy the inputs to start farming again. The seas have since calmed down, but there are no boats to sail and fish again. The live stocks have sustained the farmers for awhile, but there is no resource left to rebuild poultries and piggeries, let alone a roof for the farmers’ families. Indeed, now is the time to get our acts together to help them pick up the pieces of their shattered lives. It is our hope that with that through “BackToFarm”, these families will rise up to the challenge of getting back to the life they knew ... a life of dignity and service.

TOFARMin Action

Without doubt, the agriculture and fisheries sectors suffered enormous destruction

these sectors in the province of Leyte, affected families will find it extremely difficult to get back on track without the support of both the government and the private sector. Farms were totally washed out and crop devastation is massive. Fishing vessels were destroyed grounding fisher folks. Poultries and piggeries were levelled to the ground. Unattended, the agriculture and fisheries sector will not be able to recover immediately to support the local economy and meet the province’s requirements for food production. Agriculture, after all, is the main industry of the Province of Leyte.
