PRESS RELEASE

The marketing seminar is presented by the CIPA and provides statistics information about digital cameras and interchangeable lenses, along with GfK, which networks worldwide research sites. Starting from the CIPA’s statistics and GfK “GLOBAL,” this analysis covers the “U.S.” “China,” and “Japan.” The “U.S.” session is presented by the NPD, a researcher of U.S. markets. The analysis of Asian markets, getting more important both for the CIPA and GfK, is divided into “China” and “Japan.” With a limited time window, each region is covered every two years. If you are interested in these regions, please feel free to join the CP+ seminars.

1. The Evolving Photographer 10:30-11:10Ed Lee (group director, Worldwide Consumer and Professional Imaging Services)

Almost everyone has access to a camera or smartphone and taking a photo is easy. The role that photography plays in each person’s life is different. Casual picture-takers are happy using their smartphones. More serious photographers still rely on their digital cameras. This session will look at the evolution of the different types of photographers and highlight potential areas of opportunities.

2. Consumer Imaging in the 360-Degree World 11:10-11:40Alan Bullock (associate director, Connected Imaging Trends Service)

Virtual and Augmented Reality give consumers new ways to experience content ranging from entertainment and games to sightseeing and workplace tasks. Cameras with a 180- or 360-degree field of view allow consumers to capture their own immersive content, but what happens after that? This presentation looks at the latest devices and services, as well as opportunities and challenges that they present.

3. The Role of Printing & Output in Today’s Photography Market 11:40-12:10David Haueter (associate director, Photo Printing Trends Service)

Digital photography changed the photo print market substantially from the days of film and a similar change is taking place again as smartphones are largely displacing digital cameras. Despite all the changes that the photography market has gone through and the challenges they represent, there are still many opportunities for success in the photo print market. This session will review how market dynamics are shaping the photo print and output market as well as discuss ways to raise the value and awareness of print.

Messages from the Past to the Future

“Photographs That We Want to Pass Down to

Our Descendants”

Japan Professional Photographers Society (JPS) Presents

Photography, invented in the 19th century, made a quantum leap in the 20th century, and has left a wide variety of memories since then. In the “Photographs That We Want to Pass Down to Our Descendants” exhibition at Minato Mirai Gallery, Koutaro Iizawa, a photography critic, and Norihiko Matsumoto, a photographer, will plainly explain the backgrounds of the pictures, the messages they relay, and the significant value left to us by these photographs. They will also discuss technical information so that you can keep your own pictures for posterity.

“Photographs That We Want to Pass Down to Our Descendants”

By Japan Photography Archiving Center

Mar 1 (Thu) to 4 (Sun)Venue: Minato Mirai Gallery11:00-19:00 (18:00 on Mar 4)

From the approx. 300,000 photographic negatives that the Japan Photography Archiving Center retains, we developed a set of pictures ranging from 1920 to 1970. Among them, we selected about 100 pictures, including documentary pictures from Younosuke Natori, Ihei Kimura, Yoshio Watanabe, and contemporary photographers, along with pictures showing Japanese cultural properties and pictures that recorded the lives of everyday Japanese. Enjoy the modern history of Japan through these rare photographs.
