Which is why we created the ORIGINAL close fitting, breathable and completely waterproof socks and we continue to dedicate our time and effort to transforming the most basic accessories into essential bits of kit.

This really is all season, all-purpose technical gear with a range of hats, gloves and socks that are designed for hiking, cycling, climbing, trail running, horse riding, hunting, shooting, fishing, even walking the dog.

It’s always raining somewhere. Whether it’s because you’re committed to your sport, your daily commute, because the dog needs walking every day or even if it’s simply because going out running or riding through puddles is actually a lot of fun (go on, be honest, it is).

Whatever the reason, one thing’s certain – a cold and wet head, hands or feet is pretty miserable.

SealSkinz® enables anyone and everyone to get outdoors –

whatever the weather.

Welcome to our 2012/13 product catalogue. You will discover some exciting new products in the 2012/13 catalogue including our Belgian-Style Cycling Hat, Nordic Gloves, more children specific products and the most revolutionary close fitting knitted gloves in the world.

From a commercial perspective, our focus is forging stronger partnerships with our retail customers and distributors to ensure we promote sell-through. To achieve this we’ve spent time with our customers to develop POS and in-store material that continues to work.

We aim to increase awareness and understanding to make SealSkinz® a core brand of choice for consumers. We take a different, specialised approach to our competitors. Socks, hats and gloves are what we do, not merely an accessory.

A lot has happened in the last 12 months; the seasons are shifting, we’re experiencing ever more inclement weather and more and more people are discovering SealSkinz® and realising the benefit of our products.

As always, we remain dedicated to refining and developing our product ranges and this season sees more improvements to product design, detailing, fabric specs and fit on many of our ‘original’ lines, as well as the introduction of new products.

We’re still focussed on our key market sectors of Cycling and Outdoor and will continue to invest heavily in R&D to refine our product ranges for these disciplines. We’re also seeing significant growth in the Equestrian and Field Sports markets, as well as new applications such as Run.

SealSkinz® are one of the few all-purpose specialist technical accessory brands. We design and create the world’s best no-nonsense waterproof socks, gloves and hats using innovative materials, technologies and processes. That means we do it better than anyone else.

SealSkinz® is technical gear in the truest sense – rugged, hardwearing and unashamedly functional – designed and engineered to the highest standards.

How do SealSkinz® work?

SealSkinz® products are engineered using our unique seamless, close fitting, 3 layer technology which maintains membrane integrity alongside an anatomical 3D natural feel.

They incorporate:

1. Tough durable outer fabrics.

2. A waterproof, breathable (min WVP 65%) membrane.

3. Built-in moisture management thanks to high-wicking, anti-microbial liners, which actively wick moisture away from the skin.

PLEASE NOTE: The type of membrane arrangement varies depending on the product.

Something for all conditions.

We design and engineer the entire range of products so there is something suitable for all weather conditions. Naturally, how cold or hot someone feels is relative to the individual. We have developed a thermal rating system, graded from ONE to FIVE to indicate the relative warmth of our products.

Products with a thermal rating of ONE are lighter weight and/or thinner and suited to warmer conditions or more energetic activities, such as running. Products with a thermal rating of FIVE are heavier weight and/or thicker, these are great for cold, extreme conditions and are suited to less-energetic, static activities, such as fishing and shooting.

Waterproof, breathable 3 layer patented technology.

Page 12: The ORIGINAL waterproof socks, gloves and hats

Do SealSkinz® contain any animal products? We absolutely do not use animal parts in any of our products other than Merino wool and leather.

How can SealSkinz® products be both waterproof and breathable? The waterproof, breathable material we use is a hydrophilic membrane. It’s a thin but solid, flexible layer which does not allow water droplets to pass, making it totally waterproof. The membrane ‘breathes’ by allowing water molecules to pass. These water molecules are driven through the membrane because of the higher temperature and humidity inside the sock, glove or hat compared to the outside.

How waterproof are SealSkinz® products? Waterproof fabrics and garments are generally tested to withstand a certain level of ‘hydrostatic head’. Our membranes are tested to withstand a column of water (hydrostatic head) at least 7,000mm high.

Are SealSkinz® products guaranteed? We guarantee all our products to be 100% waterproof when leaving the factory. Should you have a problem with a SealSkinz® product, please return it to us and we will put it through our testing procedures. If there is a manufacturing defect, we will replace the item.

How breathable are SealSkinz® products? SealSkinz® products are very breathable. We specify a minimum W.V.P (Water Vapour Permeability index) of 65% for all our patented socks and gloves (BS3424: Part 34; Method 37).

Do SealSkinz® products need any special waterproofing treatment? No, the membrane is a permanent waterproof barrier. There is no need to treat or reproof it in order to maintain or restore waterproofness.

Are SealSkinz® waterproof products also windproof? Yes, the membrane is windproof as well as waterproof.

How do I wash and dry SealSkinz® products? Washing instructions are shown on the packaging and labels attached to the products themselves. SealSkinz® socks and waterproof knitted gloves can be machine washed at a maximum temperature of 40°C. They can be either drip or tumble dried on a cool setting. A good tip is to turn the socks inside out when drying them, as the wool lining takes longer to dry than the nylon outer. Also, ensure they are not exposed to excessive heat.

There are no special requirements for the type of washing powder or detergent that you use. Please refer to the care instructions on the individual products.

Can the membrane be damaged? As the socks contain a membrane, always wear them with appropriate footwear. Avoid standing on stones and sharp objects that could puncture. With gloves, avoid thorns and other very sharp objects that could puncture the membrane.

How warm are the Ultra Grip and Spun Steel gloves? The patented 3 layer system means that these gloves are warm considering how thin they are. However, they are designed to be close fitting with maximum grip and dexterity. Typically warmer gloves such as Ski gloves have thick insulating material making them more bulky and less dexterous. Thinner gloves are not as warm. Be careful that the gloves are not too tight as this can restrict the blood circulation and make the hands feel cold.

Do the socks or gloves ever let water in? Actually yes they do; this can happen in extreme conditions if water runs into the top of a sock or into the wrist of a glove. To reduce this, many people will wear their trousers or leggings over the socks and cyclists will often run a piece of tape around the top of the socks. With gloves, tuck the cuff under the wrist of the jacket to prevent water running into the glove.

Got a question? Let us answer it...

44

Page 13: The ORIGINAL waterproof socks, gloves and hats

Will my feet feel sweaty in the socks? No they shouldn’t. The membrane is ‘breathable’ and the inner lining ‘wicks’ moisture and sweat away from the skin. The moisture then passes through the membrane keeping your feet dry and avoiding any clammy feeling.

Will the socks keep my feet warm? Yes. The 3 layer system is inherently warmer than a normal sock and the membrane is windproof as well as waterproof. Of course the biggest factor is keeping your feet dry as dry feet will feel considerably warmer than wet ones.

How do the socks reduce blisters? Blisters are formed because of excessive friction on the skin. Wet skin, being softer than dry skin, is far more susceptible to blistering. SealSkinz® socks reduce the chance of blistering by keeping your feet dry. The patented 3 layer system also absorbs movement between the shoe and the skin, further reducing blisters.

How long will the socks last? As with other items of quality outdoor clothing, if cared for in the right way, SealSkinz® products can last for several years depending on how often they are worn. The nylon outer is harder wearing than a typical walking sock and they will last just as long, if not even longer.

How long do the socks take to dry?If you don’t have access to a tumble drier, turn them inside out and the socks should dry overnight in a warm room or airing cupboard; just remember not to put them onto a direct heat source such as a radiator. The heavier weight socks may take a little longer to dry due to the thickness of the product.

I’m in-between shoe sizes, what size sock should I buy? Our socks come in Small (UK shoe size 3-5), Medium (6-8), Large (9-11) and Extra Large (12-14). If you are in-between sizes, we recommend going up a sock size, i.e. if you are a shoe size 8½, then buy a ‘Large’ size sock.

Should I wear liner socks or gloves? SealSkinz® waterproof socks and gloves are designed to be worn directly next to the skin with no liners. However, if you do need an extra layer for warmth then our liner socks and gloves are perfect. Made with Merino wool, they are both warm and have excellent wicking properties – a must for any liner. Of course, the liner gloves and socks are also great when worn by themselves.

What is the fit of our socks like? The close fitting socks will fit comfortably, just like a normal sock in your shoes.

What is the lowest temperature that I can wear SealSkinz® gloves at? It is difficult to give a definitive answer to this question because everyone feels the cold in a different way. Some people will feel cold when the temperature is above freezing, others won’t. The minimum temperature for wearing a glove also varies depending on the activity and the weather conditions. For example, when running, you feel the cold less than when standing still and you may feel colder when cycling into the wind in the wet than downwind in the dry.

For these reasons we don’t define maximum or minimum temperatures. SealSkinz® products can be worn in conditions ranging from summer warmth through to extreme cold. The thermal rating system provides an indication of the relative warmth of different SealSkinz® hats, gloves and socks – the higher the thermal rating, the colder the weather condition the product can be used in. (Please see page 6 for more information.)

We use the most suitable material.

Our SealSkinz® products are made from a variety of technical materials, tailored to suit the end purpose of the product. We currently use the following materials.

Merino wool - Finer than traditional wool with tiny overlapping scales that case each fibre. These scales are hydrophobic (water repellent). Inside it’s a different story, the fibre core is hydrophilic (highly absorbent).

Merino is therefore a wicking fibre and can absorb and release 10 times more moisture than synthetics. Each fibre can absorb up to one third of its own weight in moisture without feeling clammy or wet to the touch. In our socks and gloves, the moisture is then wicked through the membrane to keep you feeling warm and dry.

Merino wool has the ability to absorb and release moisture to cool or warm, regulating temperature. It also has excellent anti-microbial properties, helping reduce odour buildup inside your socks or gloves.

Coolmax® - A specially engineered fibre from INVISTA™ which transports perspiration away from the skin towards the waterproof, breathable membrane. The uniquely shaped fibres provide great breathability, even when wet, helping you to stay dry in all conditions.

In moisture management and breathability tests versus competition, Coolmax® is proven to have the fastest drying rate, the quickest and most efficient movement of moisture away from the skin and the best breathability.

Even cotton, which absorbs and retains 14 times more moisture than polypropylene, does not wick moisture away from the skin like Coolmax®.

Primaloft® - Originally developed under contract for the United States Army as a replacement for down because down absorbs water and loses its insulating properties when wet. Primaloft’s® unique composition was patented and the product line was expanded to meet the specific needs of outdoor enthusiasts.

The lightweight and soft Primaloft® insulation core creates millions of air spaces suspended in the microfibre mesh. Even when forced into the Primaloft® core, water is repelled and not absorbed by the patented microfibre structure, so Primaloft® keeps you warm, even in the wet.

Kevlar® - An advanced technology from DuPont that combines high strength with low weight and comfort with protection. Products made with Kevlar® range from protective apparel and sports equipment to automotive parts and ropes used on the Mars Pathfinder.

Kevlar® is five times stronger than steel on an equal weight basis yet at the same time, it is lightweight, flexible and comfortable. This unique combination of attributes enables it to provide excellent cut, abrasion and tear resistance.

Pittard’s leather - Pittard’s leather is the finest in the world. Pittards has been manufacturing leather in the UK since 1826. Pittards have a reputation around the world for producing fine gloving, fashion and shoe leather. They are at the cutting edge of new leather innovations which have enabled sports wear brands, such as ourselves, to offer improved products to customers and the Pittard’s technical leather we use, results in superior performance in our gloves.

Care instructions - Every SealSkinz® product has care instructions on the packaging and attached to the product labels.

SealSkinz® waterproof socks and knitted waterproof gloves can be machine washed at a maximum temperature of 40°C. They can be either drip or tumble dried on a cool setting. It is advised that you do not dry on a radiator or other direct heat source. There are no special requirements for the type of washing powder or detergent that you use.

For other products, please refer to the care instructions on the individual products for a definitive guide.

For gloves that have leather palms, clean leather with a cloth or brush and lukewarm water and avoid using soap on the leather. Use suitable leather conditioner as required.

Product care and size guide.

Thermal ratings - Page 6 details the product technology and the thermal rating. As a quick reference our thermal rating system grades the products from ONE to FIVE to indicate the relative warmth of our products. However, how cold or hot someone feels is relative to the individual.

Products with a thermal rating of ONE are lighter weight and/or thinner. Products with a thermal rating of FIVE are heavier weight and/or thicker.

Returns - Products made using SealSkinz® patented technology are tested for waterproofness during manufacture. For this reason, in the unlikely event that there is a problem, we ask that any faulty products are returned to us for testing prior to giving the customer a refund or replacement. All goods found to have a manufacturing fault will be replaced free of charge.
