Mobile Management Forum(Wednesday April 12 - by invitation)

On April 12, 2000, The Open Group will launch the MobileManagement Forum to address the compatibility andinteroperability challenges of managing mobile data devicesand applications. Leveraging the depth and breadth of TheOpen Group’s expertise in enterprise integration, this Forumbrings together leading vendors of mobile and wirelesssolutions and products with corporate and governmentorganizations who are early adopters of wireless technologies.

Working collectively, the Forum members will tackle the keyissues impeding the widespread adoption of wirelesstechnologies into the enterprise environment. Below is anillustrative list of some of the challenges identified by leaders in this market:

Session Management: Defined as a set of activities, oftenwith conditional logic built in, that are executed automaticallywhenever devices establish a connection. Mechanisms such asdata compression and automated recovery/restart in case oflink failure need to be considered to assist in providing dataintegrity, end user transparency and ease of use.

Authorization: Mobile device “pollution” occurs without theappropriate authorization disciplines. There are obvious linksin this domain to both security and directory services which are particular strengths of The Open Group. For example, theprofile of authorization permissions as they relate to users, devices and functions often exist in a central directory. Thiscentral directory needs to be available to and synchronizedwith, the mobile or wireless device. Standards governing theseefforts in the wire-line world need to be extended and adaptedto embrace the needs of the wireless mobile space.

Authentication: A critical aspect of mobile management, alsoclosely linked to security, authentication is the need to ensurethat the mobile device trying to gain access to the corporatenetwork is who or what it claims to be. Corporate networkadministrators are looking for a set of common approachesand standards which give them the confidence to expose thecorporate data or information to mobile users.

Data Synchronization: Synchronization of calendaring andscheduling functions between a PC and a mobile device aretwo of the initial problems facing the vendor and usercommunity. More complex applications specific to mobileworkers extend synchronization needs to include access tocentral databases. These databases support the functionality of mobile devices as well as address decisions about the subset ofcentral data appropriate for a particular mobile user or device. The market abounds with proprietary approaches, but acommon framework or interface layer is critical to simplifyapplication design and integration for corporate users.

Location Services: Mobile devices have the ability to reporttheir location, a capability which is invaluable for the provisionof location-dependent services such as traffic, weather andlocal retail outlet information.

Open Standards are required to establish a common interfaceand thus facilitate interoperability of a multiplicity of solutionsalready appearing in the market place. The power and personal relevance of such solutions is increased when a connection isformed to user profiling and directory services. The Forumwill explore and seek to establish common interoperablestandards.

Systems ManagementProgram(Wednesday through Friday)

The Enterprise Systems Management Program Group willfocus on three major items.

The Framework for Manageability initiative will enable anymanagement application to interoperate with anymanagement agent. The group will review activities sincethe meeting of the Program Group in January, investigatethe applicability of existing vendor technologies and set outa plan of activities leading up to the development of anarchitecture for Manageability, backed by practical productimplementation.

With the focus of the overall meeting being on issues relatingto Wireless and Mobile Computing, the Program Group willinvestigate how Enterprise Management systems need to beextended to encompass these new technology areas, and howthe Enterprise Systems Management Program will interactwith the new Mobile Management Forum being established atthis meeting.

The Open Group has an open work item related to ServiceManagement. The Open Group is likely to build on the workof other consortia who are already active in this area. Duringthis meeting, the group will examine the work of ITSMF (ITService Management Forum) and ITIL, to establish the extentto which it is possible to adopt their work as the basis forService Management in The Open Group, and how toestablish the co-operative relationship needed to achieve this.
