WORK, inspired by Greek philosophy and the Greek way of life. The event, jointly

sponsored by the Parnassos Hellenic Cultural Society, the Ottawa Association of

Friends of the Canadian Institute in Greece and the Embassy of Greece, will take place

Wednesday, May 18th from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the Hellenic Meeting and Reception

Centre. Admission is free and refreshments will be served. The authors will also be

Ελληνοκαναδικού Ινστιτούτου Οττάβας και θα πραγματοποιηθεί την Τετάρτη, 18

ἦλθεν ὁ ᾿Ιησοῦς. ¨Ελεγον οὖν αὐτῷ οἱ ἄλλοι μαθηταί· ἑωράκαμεν τὸν Κύριον. Ό δὲ

εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· ἐὰν μὴ ἴδω ἐν ταῖς χερσὶν αὐτοῦ τὸν τύπον τῶν ἥλων, καὶ βάλω τὸν

δάκτυλόν μου εἰς τὸν τύπον τῶν ἥλων, καὶ βάλω τὴν χεῖρά μου εἰς τὴν πλευρὰν αὐτοῦ,

οὐ μὴ πιστεύσω. Καὶ μεθ᾽ ἡμέρας ὀκτὼ πάλιν ἦσαν ἔσω οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ Θωμᾶς

μετ᾽ αὐτῶν. Έρχεται ὁ ᾿Ιησοῦς τῶν θυρῶν κεκλεισμένων, καὶ ἔστη εἰς τὸ μέσον καὶ

Πολλὰ μὲν οὖν καὶ ἄλλα σημεῖα ἐποίησεν ὁ ᾿Ιησοῦς ἐνώπιον τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ, ἃ

οὐκ ἔστι γεγραμμένα ἐν τῷ βιβλίῳ τούτῳ· ταῦτα δὲ γέγραπται ἵνα πιστεύσητε ὅτι

᾿Ιησοῦς ἐστιν ὁ Χριστὸς ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ, καὶ ἵνα πιστεύοντες ζωὴν ἔχητε ἐν τῷ

ὀνόματι αὐτοῦ.

Όλοι οι ηλικιωμένοι της Κοινότητάς μας προσκαλούνται στην εκδήλωση «Βραδιά

Καντάδας» που θα πραγματοποιηθεί στο Κοινοτικό Κέντρο, την Πέμπτη, 12 Μαΐου, 5

μ.μ. Ο αριθμός των εισιτηρίων είναι περιορισμένος γι’ αυτό σας παρακαλούμε, κλείστε

μ.μ., στο χωλ του ιερού ναού . Σας υπενθυμίζουμε ότι, σύμφωνα με τους Εσωτερικούς Κανονισμούς

Ο Πανευβοϊκός Σύλλογος Οττάβας θα τιμήσει τη μνήμη του Πολιούχου της Ευβοίας,

Αγίου Ιωάννου του Ρώσου, την Κυριακή 29 Μαΐου, στο Κοινοτικό Κέντρο, αμέσως

Epistle of St. John’s First Universal Letter 1:1-7

Their voice has gone out into all the earth.

Verse: The heavens declare the glory of God.

THAT WHICH WAS from the beginning, which we have heard, which we

have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon and touched with our hands,

concerning the word of life - the life was made manifest, and we saw it, and testify to

it, and proclaim to you the eternal life which was with the Father and was made

manifest to us - that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that

you may have fellowship with us; and our fellowship is with the Father and with his

Son Jesus Christ. And we are writing this that our joy may be complete.

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is

light and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we

walk in darkness, we lie and do not live according to the truth; but if we walk in the

light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus

his Son cleanses us from all sin.

The Gospel Reading: St. John 20:19-31

On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut

where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and

said to them: "Peace be with you." When He had said this, He showed them His hands

and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them

again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." And when

He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them: "Receive the Holy Spirit. If

you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are

retained."

Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when

Jesus came. So the other disciples told him: "We have seen the Lord." But he said to

them: "Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the

mark of the nails, and place my hand in His side, I will not believe."

Eight days later, His disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with

them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them, and said: "Peace

be with you." Then He said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and see my hands; and

put out your hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing." Thomas

answered Him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to Him: "Have you believed

because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe."

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not

written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the

Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

Seniors’ “Kantada Night” – May 12th

All seniors of our Community are invited to sing “Kantades”, the old Greek songs that are loved

so much! This is a wonderful occasion to share a meal, reminisce and have a great time - at the

Banquet Centre on Thursday, May 12th at 5:00 p.m. Tickets are limited: please reserve your seat

Tickets are $25 for members of the Association, or $30 for non-members, including dinner.

The Hellenic Community calls all its members to a General Assembly on Tuesday, May 24th at 6:30 p.m., at the Church Hall. All members are encouraged to participate. We would

like to remind you that according to the Community By-laws you must have paid the

2015 & 2016 membership dues in order to have the right to express an opinion and/or

vote at the General Assembly. Copies of the General Assembly (November 2015), the

Special General Assembly (February 2016) and the 2015 Financial Statements will be

available one week prior to the GA from the Church or Community offices.

Registration will be held from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m.

Panevoikon Association - Annual Luncheon May 29th

The Panevoikon Association of Ottawa will honour the name day of their Patron Saint, St. John

the Russian, with their annual luncheon immediately following the Divine Liturgy on Sunday,

May 29th at the Banquet Centre. They invite everyone to experience the magical taste of

OHAA is celebrating its 13th season of Youth Soccer. The program has enjoyed a large partici-

“Our Window Over the Kitchen Sink”

A few years ago a bad fire destroyed the farm house of a widow in Vermont. In

rebuilding she was asked if there were any changes she wanted in the new house. She

replied that the house could be rebuilt exactly as it was – with just one difference. She

wanted a window over the kitchen sink.

For years she had washed dishes against a blank wall! Now she wanted a

window to enable her to look out at the beautiful Green Mountains of Vermont. When

you stop to think of it, this is what our Christian faith does for us. It puts a window

over the kitchen sink. It gives us a vision while we work.

All of us need vision. “Where there is no vision, the people perish,” we read in

the Book of Proverbs. A task without vision is a drudgery. Every life that amounts to

anything begins with a vision. When King Darius ordered everyone in Babylon to

worship no other God but the gods of Babylon, Daniel knelt three times a day in the

privacy of his room, opened his window toward Jerusalem and prayed to the one true

God. Morning, afternoon, and evening, his window was opened toward Jerusalem. It

was this vision of God nourished by prayer that enabled Daniel to remain faithful to

God in pagon Babylon.

«Το παράθυρό μας πάνω από το νεροχύτη»

Πριν από μερικά χρόνια μια φωτιά κατέστρεψε το σπίτι μιας χήρας σ’ ένα

αγρόκτημα στο Βερμόντ. Κατά την επανοικοδόμησή του, τη ρώτησαν αν ήθελε να

κάνει κάποιες αλλαγές. Εκείνη απάντησε ότι θέλει να χτιστεί το σπίτι της όπως

ακριβώς ήταν πριν με μία μόνο διαφορά· ένα παράθυρο πάνω από το νεροχύτη της

κουζίνας.

Για χρόνια έπλενε τα πιάτα έχοντας απέναντί της ένα τοίχο. Τώρα, ήθελε ένα

παράθυρο για να μπορεί να βλέπει έξω τα καταπράσινα βουνά του Βερμόντ. Αν το

σκεφθείτε καλά, θα δείτε πως κάτι παρόμοιο κάνει και για εμάς η Χριστιανική μας

πίστη. Τοποθετεί ένα παράθυρο στον τοίχο πάνω από το νεροχύτη μας. Μας δίνει ένα

όραμα ενώ δουλεύουμε.

Όλοι μας χρειαζόμαστε ένα όραμα. «Όταν δεν υπάρχει όραμα οι άνθρωποι

χάνονται» λέει το βιβλίο των Παροιμιών. Ένα καθήκον δίχως όραμα είναι αγγαρεία.

Κάθε ζωή που αποβλέπει σε κάτι ξεκινά με ένα όραμα. Όταν ο βασιλιάς Δαρείος

διέταξε τους κατοίκους της Βαβυλώνας να μην προσκυνούν κανέναν άλλον θεό εκτός

από τους θεούς τής Βαβυλώνας, ο Δανιήλ γονάτιζε τρεις φορές την ημέρα μέσα στο

δωμάτιό του, άνοιγε το παράθυρο που έβλεπε προς την Ιερουσαλήμ και προσευχόταν

στον μόνο αληθινό Θεό. Πρωί, απόγευμα και βράδυ το παράθυρό του ήταν ανοιγμένο

προς τα Ιεροσόλυμα. Ήταν το όραμα του Θεού που τρέφοταν από την προσευχή που

επέτρεψε στον Δανιήλ να παραμείνει πιστός στο Θεό, μέσα στην ειδωλολατρική

Βαβυλώνα.
