There are over 153.2 million country code domain names registered around the world

Other types of professional gTLDs also exist, from .marketing

to .photography. This year Google launched .app domains with built in security, aimed at

app developers and those in the tech industry.

With over 21m domain names, .tk, from the tiny South Pacific island

of Tokelau, remains the world’s largest country-code domain name with 21,196,458

registrations, largely due to its free registration policy. The rest of the top ten includes:

The .UK namespace remains a powerful marketing

tool for individuals and businesses in both the UK and worldwide. It’s one of the world’s most popular country code domains, with 12%

growth since last year. Of the top ten country-code domains, .UK is the fastest growing, second only to

Tokelau.

Some ccTLDs are often used to market to specific sectors, and demand for these fluctuates. The

Cocos Islands’ .cc domain, often used by those in the creative community, has shrunk by 44%, while Indonesia’s .id,

sometimes used by individuals working in security or identity fields, has shrunk by

80%. But Anguilla’s .ai has surged by 219% since last year, reflecting the current

boom in Artificial Intelligence.

2018 has seen huge growth in African domains,

with eight country codes from the continent achieving growth of

more than 100% since last year: Zimbabwe’s .zw (1588%), Equatorial

Guinea’s .gq (478%), Arab Republic of Egypt’s .(%467) رصم, Mali’s .ml (443%),

Gabon’s .ga (289%), Central African Republic’s .cf (251%), Democratic

Republic of the Congo’s .cd (116%) and Mozambique’s .mz (104%).

Kuwait’s country code .kw has seen the biggest

percentage growth overall in the past year, with the number of these

domains soaring by 16080%. However in real terms this is only an

extra 4,020 domains in a country which doesn’t allow

registrations from individuals in other countries.

One of the world’s least used country

codes continues to be North Korea’s .kp, with only five new

registrations since last year. The country now has only 29

registered domains, which is due to the country’s strict

censorship of the internet.

The US has seen a 17% decline in the number of registrations for its .us

country-code domain. Overall the size of the country is

disproportionate to the traditional world map which may be due to

businesses and individuals preferring the .com domain.
