THE OLIN T. BINKLEY MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH

MARCH 11, 2018 THE FOURTH SUNDAY IN LENT

BECOMING AWARE

I still believe in Jesus. Indeed, I believe in him more than ever. I need him more than ever. Some days the only thing I have left of my Christianity is Jesus. And that’s okay.

I still believe in the prophetic religion of Jesus and of those before him and those after him who also shared it – a religion of justice, love, and compassion, a powerful source of good in this broken world.

(from David Gushee, Still Christian: Following Jesus Out of American Evangelicalism)

HEARING OUR JOYS & CONCERNS THE NEW TESTAMENT LESSON Ephesians 2: 8-10 CALL TO PRAYER A Singer’s Prayer Robert Powell

When my soul has left this body, And my sins then stand forgiven. In the glory of God's presence,

Let me learn the songs of heaven. Songs of peace and of creation, Songs of joy shine on each face,

Songs of unsequestered color, Songs of everlasting grace. Songs of sacred understanding, Shimmer

in God's holy light. Songs of loves compelling beauty, Lustrous glory, God's delight. Let mine rise

with all the voices, Every tongue God's mystery tell, Echoes back the love between us, Heaven

where my true heart dwells. Text: Beverly Easterling

GIVING & RESPONDING

SENTENCES OF STEWARDSHIP UNISON PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

May our lives reflect, O Lord, the praises that we sing. We have received grace upon grace, so may we live in grace with one another. We have received forgiveness, so may we forgive,. We have received gifts far beyond our need, so may we give. Bless these gifts given this day and always. Amen.

OFFERTORY Restore My Soul Robert Powell

Restore my soul, O Lord, and heal my heart's distress.

O cleanse me from my weariness, And bring my spirit rest.

Restore my joy, O Lord, My heart is standing still.

O touch me, reach my emptiness, Retrieve my broken will.

O God, who sees beyond our sight, who hears our every prayer,

Remake our foolish human faith, For always you are there.

Accept my life, O Lord, My heart: flawed, frail, and spent,

Requires the comfort of thy love to mend life's discontents. Text: Beverly Easterling

We are fortunate at Binkley to have intentionally chosen from our founding to follow the Liturgical Year. Each liturgical season brings with it specific patterns and practices; rhythms, if you will, that allow us to follow more fully in the way of Jesus with head and heart and body. During the season of

Lent things change drastically. The singing or saying of "alleluia" is silenced, the paraments (the hangings on the pulpit, lectern, and communion table) change to purple or to unbleached linen, and music takes on a more somber and penitential nature. In some Christian traditions instrumental

music, especially organ music, is completely "given up" for Lent. This year at Binkley we will "give up" a portion of the organ music that we normally hear each Sunday by omitting the voluntary. The closing voluntary will return on Easter Day.

Guests, welcome! We are so glad you have chosen to worship with us today. Please leave us your

information in the Friendship Register so we can get to know you better. The flowers on the communion table are given by Marge Miles in hope that Spring will soon bring our

beautiful flowers and in memory of Lew Miles who loved to study and draw flowers. We are grateful for the musical gifts offered today by the Chancel Choir, Lexi Batchelor, soprano; and

Luke Boehm, bass. Hearing assistance devices and children’s worship bags are available in the Narthex before the service

begins. Music reprinted by permission under OneLicense.net A-701712. Thank you for serving in the Nursery Heather McCuiston, Hser Ku, Lauren Rossitch, and Tay Nay Sar. * The Congregation standing as each is able.

As we consider prayer, we will also be mindful of the place of prayer in a post-Parkland world, when thoughts and prayers truly are not enough. Menu: New England Clam Chowder, Sweet Corn Chowder, Apple & Goat Cheese Salad, Seasonal Fruit. FAITH CONNECTIONS ON MENTAL ILLNESS: Apr. 13, 8 am, St. Thomas More: Cultivating Mental Health: Hope and Healing is a day-long interfaith conference to explore ways faith communities can support families and individuals living with mental illness. It will focus on addiction, depression in the elderly, and mental health resources available in the community. This conference will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Chapel Hill on Friday, April 13 from 8 am to 4:15 pm. Learn more about the conference and how to register at http://www.faithconnectionsonmentalillness.org/annual-conference.html. LENTEN ART IN OUR SANCTUARY: Angels as Messengers: Sculptures: The angel sculptures displayed on the Communion table employ a variety of media and styles and will vary from week to week. They reflect the unique forms of these messengers envisioned by contemporary artists from throughout the world. The angels are on loan from the private collection of a member of our church. They remind us to open our hearts and minds to the Divine. Prints: The 22 images of angels displayed on the walls of the Sanctuary encompass styles ranging from folk art to Old Master. They are arranged as a timeline from Old to New Testament. The oldest image in the group is by an unknown artist of the 13th century; the most recent by an “outsider” artist who designed album covers for R.E.M. and Talking Heads. The exhibit begins on the left wall as you enter the sanctuary with the “Adoring Angel” from the N.C. Museum of Art and continues clockwise, ending at the right side with “Angel Holding a Sun,” by English artist William Morris. The collection was assembled by members of Binkley’s Fine Arts Committee with the permission of major art museums and private collectors. Exhibit notes are provided to help with your interpretation.
