a yeaR that Went By.....It’s been 92 years since The Old Boys Association of St. Josephs Boys’ High School fondly called OBA was founded. The 92nd year was bound to be a year of many functional changes in the OBA. First, was Introduc-tion of Girls into the OBA. Secondly, we put forth our primary objective as Networking and Getting Back old boys to the OBA.

It has always been a challenge to get old boys to attend functions organized by OBA and events of the School. Reasons being that many of the old boys have spread out geographically and due to the busy work schedules in these trying times of the economy.

This has even hampered the opportunity for them to meet their own batch mates. Hence, we thought we should try and bring back as many Old boys as we could to the OBA, thus began our adventurous journey - ‘OBA ON THE MOVE’.

We started out with a Presidential Dinner hosted for the Benefactors. It was heartening to see over 60 eminent Old boys attend the dinner, in spite of their busy work schedules, all we did was send out Invites followed by phone calls. It was a reassurance to their Alma Mater and to OBA of their comradeship and loyalty to the

brand JOSEPHITE!! This gave our MC the courage to go ahead with many such reunions.

We then had a reunion in Coorg where about 80 old boys were in attendance, followed by a mega Christmas Dinner for over 200 guests.

Next was St. Joseph’s feast, which was attended by over 70 people, it was a grand success especially with our Team winning the Cricket Tournament after a gap of three years.

The Reunion in GOA saw more than 50 old boys of various batches meet on a common platform of being a JOSEPHITE. This was a great opportunity for many old boys to personally meet Mr. Mario Miranda, the acclaimed cartoonist. He spent over an hour talking about his life in school and his beloved teachers. One could see his face radiating with joy as he spoke, of course, without an iota of discomfort caused by his health issues.

The final event for this year will be the Boarders Reunion where one gets to spend a night at what was previously small dorm, I am confident this event too shall go down as a memorable one.

The Old Boys of Mangalore and Kerala have also proposed to have get together later in the year at their respective places. Arrangements are being worked out for a comfortable stay at these places too.

I wish to express my happiness and gratitude for being a part of such a dedicated, Managing Committee. Even though many of them are first timers, they have put their heart and soul into every event, to make it a grand success. It gives immense satisfaction for having achieved in bringing back so many fellow men into the fold of OBA and our Alma Mater.

It has been a great year and I thank each and every one of you for your support and guidance into making this a very eventful year.

our thanks to...

Mass was followed by placing of wreath at War Memorial and Blessing of the Grotto of Our Lady which was built and donated by Batch of 1975. The school flag was unfurled by Mr.Len Noronha who was the Oldest Old Boy present, singing of the school song was led by Fr.Simon Furtardo. This year we had something different, the school song was sung with old boys grouped according to their Houses. Breakfast fol-lowed the school song, we had around 350 Old Boys present.

Group photograph followed the Breakfast. At AGM two Awards were given out First, The Life Time Achievement Award was given to Mr.Ravi Melwani and Second, The Young Achiever of the Year was presented to Nikhil Chinappa of MTV fame.

Immediately after OBA celebrations, Sumir Hinduja got busy once again for finalization of beneficiaries of staff Medical Insurance Scheme. This year we covered 70 families from Serving Staff and 17 families of Retired staff. The total premium worked out to Rs.6.05 lakhs out of which the school contributed Rs. Two lakhs.

This year for the first time we had a Benefactors Dinner hosted by Franklin Antonat, President of OBA. Invitees were Old Boys who have sup-ported OBA in the past and all those who were willing to continue their goodwill. Jimmy Anklesaria and Rev Fr. Hedwig Da Costa spoke on the occasion. Rupees Six lakhs were raised as sponsorship during the event.

OBA Coorg – Ramprasad with the help of C.C. Thimmiah of Coorg spearheaded organizing the OBA Coorg Chapter. Report of the event is enclosed separately.

Christmas Dinner – Sashi Kiran Lewis took on the responsibility of organizing the event. It was organized differently compared to the usual pattern, which made it an exciting event. Firstly, he shifted its location to Basketball Court, games were organized for children, Tattoo paint-ing, Portrait Painting etc, and a special Mocktail Counter was the highlight of the evening. On music front Sashi organized a DJ to cater to the younger crowd and a Band to cater to older crowd. Result of the effort was seen in the numbers, we had over 250 people present. The Dinner was supervised by Gopal Bengeri.

St. Joseph’s Feast – This year the entire Celebrations of St. Joseph’s Feast was sponsored by Nadeem Ahmed. All who attended were treated to a sumptuous breakfast, beer on the house and an excellent Biryani. The Tennis Ball Cricket Tournament was won by St.Joseph’s with St.Germains as runners up, all participants were then given a memento, courtesy Saleh Ahmed.

Nearly thirty six years back lads from St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School were proud to go on excursions abroad. This year in April, twenty one students had the same sense of pride when they went on an educational tour to NASA in the United States of America. The tour was organized by Educational Tours with the support of the parents and principal Fr. Celestine Sera S.J. who also accompanied the students

photoS oF naSa ViSit

along with two teachers Mr. C.V. Naga-raj and Mr. Deepak J.X. The entire trip was memorable for the students as they visited the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the Empire State Building, the Museum of National History, Times Square, Fifth Avenue, Ground Zero, the United Na-tions and five theme parks of Disney World - Epcot, SeaWorld, Animal King-dom, Magic Kingdom and Disney Hol-lywood Studios, which was a part of the package. The students participated in Youth Education Series workshops at Disney World, a two day workshop at Kennedy Space Centre, NASA, a Q&A session with an astronaut over lunch and also went through the ATX (Astro-naut Training Experience). They wit-nessed the third last scheduled landing of the spacecraft Atlantis, as NASA is shutting operations till 2015, and expe-rienced the accompanying sonic boom. The long haul flights really tested the pa-tience levels of the enthusiastic Josephi-tes. The food, living standards and so-cial aspects of the American culture was indeed an experience for the students to narrate back home. The students, at the end, did come to believe that such trips are needed in the Global Village scene.

daVid de naZaReth

David was a Karnataka State level swimmer and Triathlete. While in his 9th & 10th Standard he discovered his talent working with computer. While still in his PUC he developed the first website for KC Reddy Swimming Centre which included an innovative sketch of a swimmer actually swimming across the bottom of the page. While studying at St. Joseph’s College, David was creating websites for many companies in India and abroad through his own company ARC Web Solutions.

The website he created for Platinum Guild propelled him onto the International arena. Along with two partners, he was the founding member of a new niche consulting and IT services firm trading in four markets and employing over 60 professionals.

As a snap decision, two years ago, David decided to go back to formal study and he has just completed his MBA from Manchester Business School, Manchester, UK where he graduated with a distinction in the top five percentile of this full time MBA programme. Presently, David is based in the UK.

iMpact oF St. JoSeph’S BoyS’ high School

As Emerson wrote, and my father was fond of pointing out to me, we build edifices of our lives upon the foundation of many debts. The school, our teachers, staff and students I came in contact with have been my foundation.

My years at St.Joseph’s Boys’ High School and Two years in Joseph’s PUC College were easily the best years of my young life, largely due to the avalanche of learning and experiences from teachers, school staff and very talented students at a special Institution. All snide comments about our cranky teachers aside, our school was truly a unique Institution - one that reinforced my shaky faith in values and longevity of great educational Institutions.

While the school was amazing in many ways, the learning of Commitment, Selflessness, Inspiration and Positive impact stood out for me.Let me share my four representative memories:

commitment: My first encounter with the school was with Fr.Shenoy. He did not admit me even after I had done well in the entrance test. For next twelve months my mom dragged me to Fr.Shenoy’s office every other week and tried to convince him over twenty such visits. One day, Fr.Shenoy called me in and told me that he was only testing my commitment and he finally admitted me to the school. I will remember Fr.Shenoy for teaching me this lesson: Infinite patience produces results.

Selflessness: A classmate who selflessly spent his time helping me with Maths and Physics on the night before most exams...and over five years moved my performance from average to distinguished. Eventually, I surpassed his near-perfect marks and he was happy for my success. I will remember this through him - It is through selfless action that one experiences one’s own fulfillment.

inspiration: A brilliant cricket captain and leader who inspired me and a team of reasonably good players against a star studded opposi-tion. His desire to build a cohesive, harmonious team than one of individual stars, propelled us to the Championship Trophy. He had faith in our abilities and inspired us to greater success, while he was going through a rather traumatic personal life. I now carry this desire to inspire people throughout my working life – A good leader inspires team work.

positive impact: A conversation with a teacher, who reminded me that despite my insecurities, studying and learning in a demanding envi-ronment with talented sportsmen and brilliant students, I should remember that I was among 5% of the most fortunate people on earth, with clear educational obligations.

In a world where most people are not literate, do not drink clean water, and have never seen a web browser, my problems (1 hour commute, 12 hour workdays) is pale in comparison. And the opportunity for positive impact is limitless.

Ultimately, when I think about why we live, there can be no better satisfaction than - to know that someone improved his/her life because you made a positive impact.

transformation literally means going beyond your own form. Thirty years ago, I joined what I thought was just another school, having ‘transferred’ from what was recognized to be ‘less reputed’ school in Bangalore. A few years after I left, I realized it had been a real transfor-mational experience. I left as an individual who was more humble than when arrived.

To me, that was the transformational experience at the St.Joseph’s Institution.

Thanks for being an important part of that experience.
